O2's AWFUL 3G network

Especially with T-Mobile throttling, I went from 10-15mb down to 2mb down because I changed to an unlimited plan while they swore blind they don't throttle :( but on the bright side I've just ordered a 3 SIM with unlimited data for £12.90 a month and I'm within their 4G rollout happy days :D

I never had much joy with 3G while I was on O2. Lived in High Wycombe in Bucks and coverage was sketchy, speeds unimpressive and their mast near where I worked regularly went down leaving you only with the ability to make calls and send texts as EDGE never worked. Even when I travelled to other areas it didn't seem much better. Moved up to Scotland and barely got a 2G signal at home, so I switched to 3 and now I get a decent 3G signal pretty-much everywhere, even out in the sticks.

I'm with Orange rather O2 and I have had similar problems with a decrease in performance on 3G. I've heard that they have been decommissioning some 3G masts to save money, and help encourage 4G growth

It frustrates me to think that I can't do anything about it because I am tied into a contract. It's ridiculously unfair that they can practically kill my internet connection but and get away with it.

What it has made me realise though... I will NEVER take out a contract with a mobile phone company again. PAYG all the way from now on!

Both Three and O2 suck in the areas I travel in London. I thought O2 (giffgaff) was bad, so got a Three PAYG to try, it is no better.

Did a speedtest ,myself and got 178 ms ping / 5.53 Mbps DL and 0.85 upload, however this was at my house - which is where I tend to get the best 3g signal (the place with my internet so 3g is never used), roaming around the town however is all sorts of signal dips etc :-/

Not my result, but 3's 4G seems pretty speedy.

Just to add to this. Went out of my usual area yesterday and just couldn't connect to 3G. managed to get on but it kept dropping. Awful speeds and google barely loaded.

I'm on giffgaff but it uses O2's network. 4G coming in March thankfully.

They're terrible where I am. It's a mixture of GPRS and EDGE when walking around the centre of Bath. With the exception of London, there is zero 4G coverage anywhere in southern England. Enough said really.

EDIT: Wish me luck!

Can you force your phone to connect to high speed/hsdpa network? I did that on my S3. I'm pretty sure I got a decent speed in Bath!

Not sure if it's iOS or O2's carrier settings but the option to disable 2G appears to have been removed which is a pain.

Does anybody else think O2's network is just, AWFUL?

Here's a speed test, in the middle of a large town in the south of the UK, today, with full signal:

This is 'good' by O2's standards, as far as I know.

Why is O2's network so bad?!?

Is it just in the south east (where I live)?

honestly this is the speed most people get wherever they are unless using 4g
