Objectivity & Subjectivity, user posting styles

well people post in a way often that puts the OP down this lowers their status etc. making the other poster look more dominant, males like to be dominant to find a mate but I dont really explain it particularly well :p

Like in motors someone posts pictures of their new car, freefallers MX5 for example and some posters say things like " mx5's are only for girls or gays".

Forums are here for people to interact. A lot of that is sharing opinions. MX5's look gay (though they are, I admit, a lot of fun) and Will is a nice bloke so doesn't take it to heart when people tell him that. He likes it, and thats enough. It probably balances out when you take into account the bike he has in the garage anyway.

However, there's enough threads started that get good responses so I don't subscribe to your sexual dominance theory.

I'm honestly not sure, I hope that I come accross as a nice person, but I sometimes fear that I've made an idiot of myself by posting a certain thing. I find my way of posting varies, depending on the subject, but most of the time I'd like to be laid back and have a laugh. This forum is great, it's so popular that you get instant replies to threads which makes it a lot easier to interact with each other.

I'm not sure, you could meet me in real life and think I'm a completely different person. I've never really thought about the way I come accross in posts.

I've noticed that I'm not really as popular as other members. Members who havn't been here as long as me. I think sometimes this maybe because of the way I come accross when posting, if I come accross like a not so decent guy.

I'm really a nice chap in real life, and very easy to get on with :)
I would be good to meet you all though, your a good bunch!

My msn address is of course in my profile, if anyone ever wants it :)

I have only comment to make about people online vs. the OcUK users I have met in real life;

The maturity of most of the posting led me to believe they would have had a higher average age...

True, how do you all see me?

Um. Too much to sum up in a sentence.

Girls really dont think it looks gay.

Myself, I now post in only two modes. Argument or sarcasm. I rarely post anything personal, and only when I am stuck for advice do I ask for it.

cleanbluesky as your one of the people I would not like to argue with, care to tell me how you perceive your posting to appear to others, or how you intend it?

Always find your posts either opening up a can of worms or changing the direction of a thread.

And I am and always have been cautious of you Gilly, whenever you post you post with authority and confidence, very cool posting style but not one I would want picking me to pieces, same goes for CBS aswell.
Sorry to return to this but I didn't get a chance to respond previously.

Thankyou for the compliment (I think?) regarding posting style. Not sure you should be particularly cautious of me though :o

I get involved in stupid arguments occasionally but I'm pretty chillaxed most of the time, just having a laugh. GD's like the door of a pub toilet , it can be cool to have a read and maybe add something funny, other times you just want to get away from the rancid stench.

Oh, and it was a compliment. :)

No worries, I am not cautious of you but due to how I post I try to avoid confruntation; the way you post I am sure you could convince me of something I know is wrong to be perfectly fine by the end of it.

You are very articulate in your choice of language on the forums when you want to be, if you notice you do it or not is another matter!

I cannot vouch for how others wish to see me, but I think that I am honest and full of spirit.

I don't care how others see me either, my only concern is that they do not throw too much bad energy my way.

That would have taken me half a page to get across. :(

Yeh you do seem to post passionately when you post, I always imagine someone speaking really loudly on a soap box when I read your posts, don't ask me why! :)

I wonder if I asked this in the hardware forums if I would get a completely different set of replies? *I will think about that one*

Yeah, I think you would.

Right up until the point it was moved to GD/merged with this one :p

As for my own posting style: I try to appear eloquent and contribute to the forum/thread if I can and - like IceBus - frequently find my posts going nowhere as I type them, at which point I return to the thread knowing it's better off without whatever contribution I would've made. I like debate and argument, though I'm more than willing to accept defeat - and usually try to make it explicit in the thread, rather than skulking away silently when I'm beaten as many do.

I normally don't post in GD too much - I'm not a great fan of a lot of the threads - but I read it a lot. HG&P and SC are where I tend to post most often.

I mainly read the forums in here and rarely post. I don't really have anything worthy to talk about or share with anybody, so I haven't really done anything to make myself known on these boards. Sums me up in real life too :p

Takes me a while to "fit in" to anything, be it a new school or place of work. But once I get to know everyone, I'm the kind of person that gets on with anybody and everyone loves to have around :)

I'm a listener by nature and usually have little to contribute.

When I do post, its usually just to give opinions/thoughts (like this one), or advise in the hardware forums.

I like to type properly, but still show my personality and sense of humour on forums. You'd see my true personality on msn though, crazy, immature and always smiling :)

I take very little personally on the Internet, I'm fairly thick skinned IRL anyways.

I know what you mean exactly there, I used to be nervous about posting my opinions on forums for fear of being proven wrong, I still am to a certain extent as I like to know the ins and outs of a topic before I even contemplate a reply.

In the hardware sections, unless I know it from my own experiences I will not post as the amount of reviews you can read that are so obviously wrong is amazing, so I only contribute to threads I have first hand experience in or something I can relate to, otherwise I leave it to others or state I am not using first hand experience.

With posting its along the lines of if you don't you will never get known, but you do not want to be known as a spammer. On a forum of this size it is impossible for everyone to know everyone, there are people with 10k+ post counts I have seen today that I have never before in other sections, and I bet there are people who do not know me!

Only person on the forums I think everyone knows or has heard of is Gilly, but that is understandable really all things considered.

I take being known as it happens, makes no difference if I am known or not as long as my opinion is respected in CC and people will question my opinions responsibly and with good grounding in that section, everywhere else I don't mind the 'who is he?' responses. :p

I'd reckon Spie is better known overall tbh ;)

Gibbo too

I did not include Spie in there because it is obvious with that one, the Avatar is hard to miss and he gets mentioned a fair bit. :)

Gibbo, in the hardware forums he is known a lot more than you I will say, but if you start scrolling down the page as it drifts onto life you have a bit of a advantage in the post count size. The really scary thing is I have never seen you post one bit of genuine spam.

I post a fair bit, but to get to your level of contribution to these forums especially a while ago must have taken some doing, I feel I am spamming when my posts get to a certain point.

Who's Spie? :p o/j

@ Yewen, yeah I agree 100%. The only threads I've really started on these boards are questions or help threads. I don't post reviews or anything. I will only help people with their problems if I have first hand experience and know what I'm talking about.
