OBLIVION - MooSe's Essential Links/mods & Tips

hi,

i have applied Qarl's Texture pack III and i am having some weird gfx problems.

for example, i walk into a room and the roof and floor textures are all black, then i walk back out and then back in and then its fine

and outside i can see some buildings with far off with the same problem.

anyone know how to fix this? anyone know what order you need to install the qarls and associated texture mods?

i used the mod manager program to create an archiveinvalidation.txt, i ticked all the check boxes for textures, meshes etc etc, was this right?

I can't comment on Quarls as I don't use it. it would appear you have a texture issue.
you might be better off posting a dedicated topic so you get more replies?

OK, so I've just started playing again and I'm starting from scratch. I installed as follows...I think :o

Oblivion
1.1 patch
KoTN
OOO
OOO patch
S.I.

I won't be using any other mods. Was this the best way to do things? Everything seems to be working fine - but I just wanna make sure before I get into the game and find I messed something up!

Also, what's the S.I. bug fix? I noticed there was a S.I. beta patch - is this the fix and should I install it then?

uh oh, the game wont even start now!!

crashes within 5 seconds of starting the oblivion.exe, i have even tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it and having everything vanilla!

using vista 64 btw.

the best order for you is;
oblivion
patch 1.2
KoTN
S.I

this gives the latest version of 1.2 which is compatible with most mods and mod updates.
I believe OOO is trialing a beta patch so you may want to go to the beth forums and check it out under the mods section. i don't use OOO so i don't know how compatible with 1.2 or S.I it is.
also if you want OOO you'll want to start it afresh as its involved to install it and use a save game.
best bet is to NOT load S.I yet.
wait for the next OOO patch update and next official beth update then load S.I otherwise you might end up in trouble.

the unofficial bug fix can be found HERE
basically if you don't use it your game will be ruined within 50 hrs!

*Edit* patch 1.32 for OOO is now public. theres a big thread on it within the mod section at beth's forums. you might want to read up on S.I compatibility so you can get S.I installed.

go here "http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=561101"
(linky function not working at the moment)

it's a FAQ on how to do a clean uninstall and other bugs.
are you using previous save games with new install?
if they are corrupt they won't run.

(using the Oblivion uninstaller does not clear oblivion. it leaves behind the data file -complete with all mods- save games and screenies.
you want to back up your screenies and save games then manually delete the Bethesda folder. also clear the oblivion.ini folder and change the name of your save games folder. (all in "my documents-my games") then follow the FAQ for clearing registry. that'll give you a clean start)

Thanks for that. I had a read through the 1.32 thread and it doesn't mention if it works OK with SI. Somebody asked but never got an answer.

Anybody else know?

just been reading thru a OOO 1.32 thread.
yes OOO works with S.I however S.I plays vanilla. ie OOO has'nt got any quests or impact in the Shivering Isles yet.

that guy liked his fault testing!

on that note the sheer amount of different problems affecting Oblivion imply either poor coding or unstable windows/driver installations.

it is true though that 1.2 and S.I have induced instability.
unfortunatley due to the amount of mods floating round each player has a virtual unique set up.

all i can say is that following the Tweakguide to set up windows, gfx driver and Oblivion will stand you in good stead.
any problems should be met by running a "dxdiag" diagnosis and using the bethesda forums to find a solution.

ok guys im giving up on Qarls Texture pack, no matter what i do it makes my textures at times go wild.

im going to keep the game as standard as possible in regards to textures.

Considering i have Vista 64x Ultimate

what texture packs should i get and in what order should i install? these need to work 100% correctly.

also, what settings do i need in mod manager to incorporate these textures into the archiveinvalidation?

PATCH 1.2.0416 NOW AVAILABLE!!

get it from the Official Elder Scrolls site HERE

it only fixes the bad form ID error which caused games to crash after several hours of play with S.I installed.(exactly what the "unofficial bug fix patch" did)

IF YOU INSTALLED BETHESDA'S BETA PATCH FIX FOR S.I YOU WILL HAVE TO DO A RE-INSTALL FOR THIS LATEST PATCH - THE BETA IS NOT COMPATIBLE!!

if you installed the "unofficial" bug fix just remove/disable it and load the official patch 1.2.0416 or don't bother unless you need a mod that specifically needs it.

Congratulations Bethesda on being so quick to release this patch after shafting everyone with Shivering Isles  :D

if you are using patch 1.2 or S.I the resolution is increased to that of many of the most popular LOD mods.
LOD and texture mods don't need activating, typically you just load in new textures and meshes. for something like "better grass without tiling" you need to add a line to the ArchiveInvalidation.txt file.
if you care to read the first post of this thread you'll see i have linked in many sites and LOD texture mods.
go to beth's forums and have a read there. it's debatable whether some of the older ones make any difference since patch 1.2.
also read tweakguide (linked im main post) he has a bit to say on texture mods.
i doubt vista makes any diffence to what texture mods you use.
the higher the texture resolution increase the more video ram and faster system you need.

do you know of any screenies with patch 1.2 and default texture packs?

be nice to see how they look. Id rather not touch texture packs, they allways seem to screw something up, but the default textures, especially in caves look horrid.

nope. beths forums?
i've never had any trouble with LOD texture mods. never run the game vanilla except for comparison testing.
the exact list i use is at the main post and the same as advised by TweakGuide.

*edit* according to tweakguide the latest patch versions do not alter texture resolution - just add pepper effect to distant lanscape.
therefore the list of texture mods he gives still stands. you'll want though the "noise reduction" texture fix as the vanilla pepper effect is a bit rubbish.
if you have any doubts look at the screenies i've posted thru this thread. (not including the armour mod pics). they are all with texture mods and a modified oblivion.ini file. my specs are in there somewhere too. post 111
