Oblivion - PC or 360

Actually so are mine. I ended up getting a PC from work for testing. The only thing I bought was the video card from OcUK. Just could not resist with the prices of X1900's lately.

Hi,

Help help, I'm in turmoil. Which should I get xbox or pc version.

My pc is p4 3.4ghz, 1gig ram and agp 850xt which is running @ 1280x1084. Saw something on IGN about stuttering on loading points on the 360 version. Would appreciate your thoughts. Have the 360 limited edition of oblivion on order for 40.99 from game and the normal edition on pc from gameplay for 24.99 (i'd change that to limited edition if I cancelled the 360 version).

Advice and thoughts sought after.

With 'only' an X850xt and 1gig of RAM you will get all the same 'stuttering', if not more.

I should be ok then with my spec. No going back anyhow now as its been shipped!! :)

Edit* I'm gonna be trying to use my native resolution of 1680x1050. Pray for me :p

Pc version definatley, the 360 version doesnt have the tes construction set, so no mods like there were on morrowind, the mods on the pc version add hundreds of hours of extra fun and gameplay into them. And of course the pc version has transparency AA which the 360 doesnt have, I prefer AA over hdr, and better loading times.

There will be official mods for the 360, but no user created ones. I'll complete it on the 360 then get it on the PC when my PC is more up to spec, and when there are a lot of good mods to choose from.

I've now had a chance to spend some time with both the 360 and PC versions and thought I'd share my experience with both incase anyone is still undecided about which platform to go for.

360 Setup - Xbox 360 (premium one with the HD), Samsung LE32R41BD 32" HD telly.

PC setup - AMD X2 4400, 2gb corsair, Geforce 7800 GTX Extreme Edition, 2 x 74gb WD Raptors in RAID 0 (system + games), 2 x 160gb WD SATA in RAID 0 (pagefile + datastore), Audigy 2ZS + 7.1 inspire speakers.

I received my 360 version of Oblivion first and initial reactions were a little dissapointing at the performance. I knew Oblivion was likely to be a monster and push the performance of the 360, but I found the loading system when outside a little bit to much, it loads on a regular basis. Whilst doing this it doesn't pause the game but it causes a little bit of stutter. Other than that I cannot fault the game, the graphics are superb, the combat feels great, the controls work fine with the pad.

I got my PC version the day after the 360 one and I must admit my thoughts as it was installing were that I was expecting the PC version to be much better performance wise. I was wrong. My system isn't the fastest in the world but it's not a bad system. I basically set the game to 1280x1024, ultra high detail, 4 x aa, 8 x af, Bloom on. It looks nice enough, but outside I'm getting FPS anywhere from 15 - 35. In dungeons the range is anywhere from about 25 - 80 FPS. I also noticed that the graphics in the distance when 'outside' just didn't look right on the PC. They look too clean and clinical. Basically the point where the vegetation stops is more apparant on the PC version. I also found that the PC version loads and stutters just as much as the 360 version. The fact I had 2gb RAM and dual raided SATA drives seemed to make no difference. Finally I must admit to having a slight preference for using the old keyboard and mouse.

So, my conclussion is that the 360 version has a slight edge between the two of them. It just looks that little bit better graphically on the 360 running on a HiDef telly. They are both excellent and well worth the purchase on either system. Both versions had technical issues with loading/stutter, but to be honest I've found that once your a few hours into the game you don't really notice these things on either version.

There's no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best games I,ve played but hindering that enjoyment is the real lack of performance on my pc, I'm seriously considering buying an xbox 360 and oblivion, but is the draw distance (that includes objects, trees, grass etc) as good as the pc version at max settings ?

No, the draw distance on the 360 is not as good as a ninja PC at max settings. Infact it's quite poor but doesn't really affect the gameplay in any way. The frame rate is sometimes an issue on the 360 also, depending on whats going on, but not a big enough issue to spoil anything.

silly question now but does it matter if the draw distance aint as far? Surely most of the time u aint seeing miles upon miles in front of u?

No, like I said, it doesn't really matter too much about the draw distance, but for some it could be slightly annoying having things spring up infront of you randomly. I was slightly miffed to begin with but now I'm not bothered because I'm enjoying the game so much.

Put it this way, on the 360 you can stand on the top of a hill and see pretty damn far in decent detail. Certainly further than required to avoid any pop-up issues (I haven't seen any yet). Unless you spend all your time on top of high mountains trying to pick out minor details in the landscape then the draw distance isn't really an issue IMO.
