Oblivion - PC or 360

So there's people here with mega spec PCs and the game still stutters? Why is the game such a massive resource hog, it doesn't look that amazing from the screens I've seen so what's that all about. Is it just poor coding?

Its probably due to the scale of it more than anything.

The world really is immense, and although it occasionally loads new areas, I have a feeling that they "exist" beforehand anyway, and its just textures etc. that are loaded when you approach.

The stuttering is nothing like has been made out dirtydog, seriously. The 'stuttering' is due to loading a new section, but you still play through that 'stutter', it doesn't really bother me now. Some sections you can walk for ages before it loads a new one too. It has to load every mushroom, temple, shrine, house, animal, dungeon, tree, bush and all the speech, it takes about 0.5-1 second.

I seem to remember Morrowind ran like a dog when it came out years ago. Just what I heard, I've never tried it. You'd just think that people with uber spec PCs, 2gig of RAM and so on would get a good framerate and loading times, if a game was well programmed. I guess the resources must be on what goes on behind the scenes because I can think of plenty of older games which look as good or better than the screens I've seen. I realise RPGs aren't about the graphics primarily but still...

I have seen many sections in this game that look better than those I have seen in screenshots. It isn't the best looking game ever, but for a game of it's scale (fitting high-resolution textures wouldn't be possible unless it was 2-3 DVD's atleast) it is the best looking.

Fair enough - I guess with RPGs you're gonna get quantity over quality where graphics are concerned. RPGs have always lagged a few steps behind FPS games in that area I think.

Actually i think you'd be suprised with the graphics if you played it through. I personally think that some of the towns and cities are pretty stunning. In fact i'd go as far as to say that the outdoor area's are the most disappointing parts graphically of the game.

I've got both the PC and 360 version. I played the PC version for about 30 minutes, and i've finished the main story on the 360 version. Shows which version i feel is better :D
