Places that are worth "taking a look at" are castles. Especially if there are display cases around a count/countess' throne, they tend to have reasonable items in there to steal.

Bandits tend to have some good items as well, can find these along roads close to cities, as well as elsewhere. Ayleid ruins have lots of chests/casks with money and potions, and sometimes the creatures have good items. They can be found everywhere really, the best option is to go roaming and when you see a fort/ruin/camp symbol on your compass, head towards it.
