October 2018 Update Pulled - Having issues?

Can you imagine if ios or android were as pathetic at updating.

I don't have to imagine. I just go to whichever forum and watch the flood of bug reports.

Or were you suggesting that the situation is somehow better on mobile? It's not.

Atleast with Android you can still take control over when and how updates are applied though :s personally I've not had any problems with updates on my Android phones and tablets aside from taking a bit of time so making sure I do them when suitable but I know that isn't the story for everyone.

The only issue I had was a strange one with the new Snip & Sketch tool. It created a folder in one of my personaly created data folders (unrelated to windows user folders like my docs etc) when I wanted to save a image. If I renamed or changed the folder structure the app would not save an image at all. Reset and reintsalling the app did not work either so I'l just have to stick with the old snipping tool.

I wonder if they will pull the coming feature that automatically identified files least used and moved them to OneDrive to free space on the PC LOL - you'd think stuff for that would be off by default... but nope.

Not 1809 but had this issue with storage sense on a previous build. very annoying:mad:

Had it on for 2 days and it's uninstalled Pallit Overclocking Software, half my desktop icons have vanished, Hauppauge Win TV Advanced settings gone to name but a few. Just watched a film in VLC then switched to Aurora b-ray player, playback was crap in both, kept pixalating and why does windows keep duplicating my drives in file explorer? Also noticed Windows was even more locked down in settings too. It's as if they forcing there default settings on the user and no longer giving the flexability to disable/uninstall all the bloatware forced on the system. I for one don't use F'book,Netflix,Booking.com etc and should be able to say wether I want this crap on my system or not. What's so wrong in wanting to be able to switch stuff off if you don't use it? Anyway I am dual booting with Mint 19 and it's brill. Even have my Win TV working and my Blu-ray playing disks ok in VLC, As for Win10 maybe a fresh installs the only answer.

Mine updated automatically and now it wont recognise the photos on my memory card from my cameras. It sees the memory card but it just appears as there are no files on it when there are hundreds

Had to upload them to Gdrive from my laptop and then download them from there and have now disabled auto updates.

I have 64GB SD card tested with USB memory card reader worked fine with 1809. After inserted USB memory card reader, Windows 10 installed driver and File Explorer opened and I can see all files on SD card.

Look like Windows 10 1809 on your PC probably installed the wrong driver, check Device Manager to reinstall correct driver.

I haven't installed it yet, and only through this thread did I know of any issues. I'm just surprised that Microsoft have admitted it this time and not released a quick patch for it.

My Surface Go lost all network connectivity after 1809, both wireless and wired via a Surface Dock. Rolling back to 1803 fixed it. The update was pulled before I upgraded my Surface Book 2, luckily.

Think I'll disable auto updates too. Only reinstalled Win 10 a couple of weeks ago too when I took the system out of Raid to Dual boot my SSD;s with Mint 19. Or...I could Raid my SSD's again and reinstall Mint 19 and ditch Win10 on main system completely. The only reason I stuck with Win10 was because of my Blu-ray driives but now I have that up and running in Mint maybe it's time to migrate over to Linux. Then just my Laptop would be left in Win 10.

Their blog is quite interesting about the re-release and reason for the problem ,
I have some sympathy for them, it does not seem unimaginable that "old" folders could be deleted.

Last week we paused LOL the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigated isolated reports of users missing files after updating. Given the serious nature of any data loss, we took the added precaution of pulling all 1809 media across all channels, including Windows Server 2019 and IoT equivalents. We intentionally start each feature update rollout slowly, closely monitoring feedback before offering the update more broadly. In this case the update was only available to those who manually clicked on “check for updates”
...
Using KFR the user redirected a known folder to a different drive. For example, suppose you ran out of space on your C drive. You want to save some files separate from your primary folder, so you add another drive to your system for these. You create “D:\documents” and change the location of the files known folder from the original “old” location c:\users\username\documents to D:\documents. In some cases, if the contents of c:\users\username\documents were not moved to D:\documents, then a user could also encounter this issue. When the October 2018 Update was installed the original “old” folder was deleted including the files in that folder (in this example c:\users\username\documents would be deleted; d:\documents, the new location, would be preserved).

My experience with Windows updates compared to Linux has been night and day. With Windows I would turn on the PC and it would randomly lock me out for an hour while it updated and rebooted once, and sometimes more, then applied more updates and rebooted again. With Kubuntu yesterday it politely notified me of available updates and explained what they were, allowed me to choose whether I wanted to install any or all of them, then quietly updated in the background while I continued working online. No reboots. No interruption. It just did it without intrusion.

Reminds me of Windows 7!

The good old days before forced updates and unexpected reboots.

I don't know how Microsoft missed it, there's been reports on the Insider Hub for 6+ months about the file deletion problem. That their response is to add an "indication of impact and severity" feature to Insider feedback is utterly laughable. As is their change control and QA processes.

I guess you missed the Win7 WU fiasco, you can't compare Windows to Linux, Linux is miles ahead in a lot of areas with regards to OS. I just wish gaming was a major part of Linux strength.

You're probably aware but Valve recently integrated WINE and DXVK into Steam. So many Windows games now work under Linux. It's not perfect by any means, many games still don't work and others have a few glitches. But there are now a fair few Windows only games that run fine on Linux under Steam Proton. It's early days but Valve are actively funding the project so it's only going to improve. This is in addition to a number of native Linux ports as well. It will be many years (if at all) before there are enough to replace Windows but the situation is improving.

I saw a twitch streamer earlier in the week that lost his stream as Windows 10 rebooted on him with 70+ viewers. It's not the first nor will be the last.

I know. WU needs sorting out. Control over updates should be in the users hands. That's why i like the Win 7 system. I don't know what "fiasco" was being referred to before, but i always had full control over updates with that OS. Nothing was ever forced upon me. Every patch had a checkbox and items could be hidden.

The situation in Windows 10 is complicated by Home users having less control than say Pro or Enterprise. The latter two can be manipulated into deferring feature updates quite easily. Even up to a year. For Home users, while it's more difficult, there are tools available though. For example there is the Hide Update tool that you can get from Microsoft. You simply set your connection to metered so that when you check for updates you can see then listed, but not have them download automatically, and then use the tool to Hide them so that you don't get bothered by them again. Perfect if you want to defer a feature update. Run the tool again later to un-hide and install.

Then there's the tool i posted about in the free programs thread. This one is a doozy. You might be aware that blocking updates on Home is a bit tricky. Simply disabling the WU Service is not enough as it re-enables at will. O&O Shutup10 has options to disable updates, but this also doesn't work. The tool i linked does work and is pretty smart It allows Defender Updates as normal while blocking everything else. All it takes is to run the script and everything is taken care of. Simple. It's just as easy to reverse. Additionally you can use it to temporarily check for updates while it continues to block automatic download. That way you can see what is being offered and you can choose to install whichever ones you want.

I really recommend it!
