*** OcUk 2011 Distributed Computing Competition ***

You cost me a precious lunch break, Mr TBag! I hope you are happy. :| :p As always, a visual estimate would return a range of values. Picture is at an angle, too, so it wouldn't be that easy to be more precise (how sneaky of you Mr T :p). Reminded me of an assessment question KPMG ask at their interviews, haha. Mind they use elephants and people, but it works just the same.

But hey, one has to settle for something right? My final answer is: 257 DVDs (in standard cases). :o Please don't laugh, if I got it horribly wrong. XD

Hi datalol-jack i will do you a favour and not take 257 as your final answer - remember theres 10 shelves there all standard dvd cases have a think and come back to it later ;)

A total guess 3226 DVDs - in cases

My guess would be 2860 - in cases :)

Duly noted peeps :)

Yup they are all in standard dvd cases no fiendishly difficult multi-jewel whatnots, grab your tape measures and think hard - of course the size of the tv is one clue but if you have a mess with uncle google there's the size of something else to take into account as well ..... i love being mean :D:o

Got it Mr Loubob sah ta very much - course if you take a look around the forums you might be able to find the dimensions or a clue to the size of something else :p:D

Thank you Mr T, sah. I grovel in humble apology for a snap calculation and lack of common sense at the time. :o The corrected answer is found in my original post.

:D No worries tis just a bit of fun, might have a mooch through the cuboards and add a few daft items to the prize list, must admit am having visions of you running around with the t trolley at work dropping off pics and the puzzle to your workmates :D:D:D

Well, I'm surprised nobody picked up on the error at work. ;) It was one of those moments of truth, really: walked down to the kitchen feeling rather smug, made the tea and was stirring in the sugars, when a DVD case in my mind turned spine first - BOOM! :D It was the quickest ninja edit in history, I can tell you that much! Oh well, redistributing the notes and the puzzle again now, alas no t trolley about to complete the perfect picture. :o

Manager is now writing an image processing script and swears he can get a near exact answer! Told you it was a slow day. I'll let him get on. ;) After all, he never wins anything in our cake raffles. Maybe this time is his time to shine? :)

Oh my head is going to hurt a lot :(

I suppose the answer depends on whether the shelves are all at perfect height for a DVD case, or whether you have gaps which must be packed.

What is really worrying though is the amount of money that needs to be spent to fill those shelves with DVDs

Duly noted chaps, yes all standard dvd cases side on no gaps.

Am actually sat back and the most relaxed i've been for a while, course the fact people are wandering around with T at work quizzing their coworkers and it looks like Mr Marine has gone into shock, Mr Frozennova applying logical mathematical thinking all jolly good fun wot wot :)

Should see what i thought of for christmas Bwahahahaaaaa :eek::D

My guess would be 2366..

With an average of 1.5 hrs viewing (main movie only, no extras) equals 3549 hours or 147.875 glorious days.

Sorry, unable to calculate the total effect on the old gray matter due to insufficient old gray matter left after watching tv continuously for 147.875 days

Go on then i'll take 2375 if your including the full length of the bottom shelf assuming it goes all the way from wall to wall. If your not including the area behind the unit on the bottom shelf the i'll go 2277
