OcUK - Build Your Own Computer

Perhaps we could make a system so that people can volunteer to help people in there local area, I certainly would if I got a discount for the next purchase :).

The trouble with that is that OcUK end up either testing far too much stuff, or selling and supporting untested configurations.

If you want a system the works, the pre-configured systems will do that.

If you want to configure your own PC, go and pick out the components and put it together yourself, expect problems to have to solve. There's plenty of people in the forums willing to throw 2p into your design.

If you want to pick and choose and get a pre-built fully working PC, start squirting money out of your nose.

Well...depends what kind of busines they want...Naturally when asking for a built PC its going to take longer, so this will need to be stated in the chekout stage / receit stage etc

I used to do it every day, someone wants a system, you build it, then test it, then sell it...Within the day basically

I can see why they don't have it on the website - would me a nightmare to get right let alone maintain!

IIRC you can phone/email and they'll do you a proper build to order. Don't know what % they'd charge though.

Tell you what would be good though, if they did Cases like what FrozenCPU.com do.

I've left links to FrozenCPU in. They're offering a service/product that OcUK doesn't and are 3000 miles away on the other side of the atlantic!

Well Nathan said that I can order a custom OC build via his email address on his profile page. But still I have not got an email back :( I was only inquiring about the prices of certain set of hardware.

Of course the other major backup you've got are the OCUK forum members who know just as much (if not more) than the OCUK staff and one of the reasons why this site was first set up.
You pick your components and then start a thread called 'Check this spec please' which always gives good advice.

there's a tech-shop in australia that has a "assemble stuff" option in the checkout.

you buy the lot and tick the box and they'll assemble everything that's compatible for you for free.

It's way way way easier building a PC than it was just 5 years ago.

We have wireless internet now and several internet capable devices. We can get help if need be.

And cases now are designed with us in mind. There's a plethora of mid-size towers with ducting etc.

Goodness... and less fussing with jumpers.

The rage of putting in an IDE hard drive set, then forgetting to switch the master and slave switches when you'd put the entire case back together...

Even early IDE was simple.
The challenge was before that was with RLL, MFM and SCSI drives.
IDE was for beginners.

just open up the general hardware section of the forums and ask for help and give a budget. Theres your custom build done for you and usually the best options as well.

yes, in all but the physical aspect of assembling and testing the components which is the point of the thread :p

Another annoying thing was forgetting to download the latest NIC driver, then you'd be sat there swearing in your chair because you'd just spent 2hrs building the machine and installing windows and now you can't get online, so your stuck.

(this applies in the rare situation when the bundled NIC driver wouldnt work or you forgot the driver CD you burned)

Having finally got enough saved up to get myself a new pc this is something which interests me greatly.

I don't know enough about the different specs and options available to me to be able to choose between things, so will be asking in the general hardware section where I'm sure people will be very helpful and sort me out a great spec.

However from there, although I reckon I'd be ok building the pc myself, I'd like the peace of mind of it being built and tested by someone who knows what they are doing, also I'd like the technical support offered on a prebuilt system, so if things go wrong I can get help easily. I know the forums are there for this kind of thing but when you don't really know exactly what you're doing, when someone asked if you have tried 'x', 'y' or 'z' to test and you don't know what they are talking about it's a little daunting and confusing!

on that theory they would need to bump the price of a pc up by a few hundred quid to do 1 pc a day per technician, even if a tec could run round the warehouse picking bits and building full custom choices and have 10-20 p c's ont he go at a time, the time rectifying problems ect would render it profitless

I just can't be bothered anymore. I've built dozens of them, just past it now :(.

Same - I'd rather pay someone else to build/test it for me and spend the time doing things I enjoy.

System building can be extremely frustrating if you get dud part(s) or unusual problems - I don't have the patience/time anymore.
