OcUK - Build Your Own Computer

You guys say that people can just go on the forums and ask help, but how many people who buy from OcUK actually use the forums, or actually know they are here?

Some people just want to be able to pick what they want, have it built and tested and delivered to their door so that they can just plug it in and away they go.

Some people just want to be able to pick what they want, have it built and tested and delivered to their door so that they can just plug it in and away they go.

Those people usually go to HP or Dell, or they buy pre-configured systems because they are not concerned about the exact details, imo.

To me, it's a bit of a weird request, if you have the knowledge/need to pick your own components then that says to me that you are probably capable of building the machine yourself.

i thought you could do this already - take one of the pre built ones, ring up and change what you want and ocuk will build it?

I suspect its not really worth the time/effort and potential, though unlikely, compatibility issues that could arise.

Id guess Their profit comes from shifting bulk stuff quick and fast not paying guys to tinker up systems for a bit of a mark up.

Perhaps OCUK could just expand on their current pre configured systems.

For example - Allow a use to select more than just CF or SSD upgrades on the Titan Megalosaur.

This could easily lead into a line of "base" configurations and drop boxes for upgrades that are specifically compatible. This is basically what OCUK already do but would expand on it a little.

The competitors I've seen with this type of system configurator quite often have very limited starting points, e.g. Mobo, and I have also seen incompatible hardware options.

If you're unsure what products to buy in the first place, surely you'll just pick a ready made system and make a couple of simple changes at the end like bigger hd or operating system. If you know a bit more about components but are unsure of the specifics, the best thing to do would just be to phone OCuk?

I can understand the actual labour part of the building being a service sold, but to have menus for building a computer is probably more hassle than it's worth. So many compatibility issues/bottlenecking if certain products are chosen, which could easily be avoided with a 2 minute conversation.

Of course the other major backup you've got are the OCUK forum members who know just as much (if not more) than the OCUK staff

About BMW's. ;):p:D

Whilst I can see the OP's point, I equally see Telescopi's and think he's right.

If we had a custom build service (again), many things can go wrong, people are forgetting it is not just building a computer; it is everything that goes with it.

Yes, the items may be compatible to build together, however there are other things to consider. One example would be, cases, cases are fine to ship in their boxes to our customers, however when building a full system in the case the pressure and the weight within the system can cause a lot of carrier damage as some cases are just not designed for full systems to be shipped inside of them as strange as it sounds as they can be flexible.

Technical support, it is hard to give technical support as it is when something goes wrong as we have to know every specification, problems that can occur, errors, anything support related on the products we sell in order to have the items resolved, and when selling systems which we have not supported or configured before I could see the support taking much longer and would cause more problems which is not what we would want.

These are a couple of things which I could see could potentially be a problem from the top of my head and I am sure there will be more, however it is not my say if it should be in place or not. I know it was not hugely popular when it was on our website before, and it is easier to just call or email one of us if you are wanting a slight change to one of our builds which I have seen to be the most effective and efficient way.
