OcUK Dadsnet thread

It's getting a bit catty and mumsnetty in here. We keep saying we all agree everyone can do things differently yet making passive aggressive comments too. Let's give it a rest.

We'll see if you change your mind when you have another child that is completely different eh.

You have become hostile as people scoffed at you paying £400 for basic advice lol.

Did you pay nappy consultants also?

Anyways, no time for hostile hypocrites. All the best.
:p I became "hostile" when someone said it was cruel for a baby to go 12 hours! Get a grip, man - you are digging where they is nothing to be dug. People have then picked up randoms threads of that discussion and started pointing fingers at me when I haven't made any hard line statements at all :p

Claws away

On the theme of mumsnet and since we no longer have a health visitor (they all left). I'm going to ask for advice (no essential oils though not that dull).

Anyone experience toddler having a cradle cap like dandruff oily, thick yellowy scales, if so what did you do to help it?

You admit to a change in behaviour (I became "hostile" when someone said it was cruel for a baby to go 12 hours) when someone challenged your opinion. You then did the same thing to others (hypocrite) because you didn't get your own way.

I think its you that needs their extra feeds at night :D

Don't count your chickens yet m8

Anyway, i'm done responding to this fool.

Scratch it off its satisfying :D. I think we used a certain shampoo but can't remember which one. I realise how incredibly helpful that is:p. I seen to rember when bathing if you are a but rough you can get a lot of it off.

We used a shampoo called Dentanox, worked a treat.

Can anyone recommend a toy suitable for a 2 month old that dangles in front of them, is soft, lights up and plays music or along those lines?

I'm looking at these

https://www.johnlewis.com/baby-einstein-sensory-play-space-activity-gym/p4263436?s_share=jlappdroid

Wondered if anyone had one. I prefer the larger one because it can be used for longer when older and more versatile that way.

FYI I really like the baby Einstein brand their stuff is great for development. Are there similar brands that are anywhere near as good or better?

Already has a play mat but it was a gift and it's crap tbh. Hard plastic toys that don't do anything. Rather just get something decent.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Music & Lights Deluxe Gym: Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games

It's a bit more cheep and cheerful than the ones you've linked (it might even be the gift one you don't like?), but at this age it does the trick. It's been great for both our boys and is still in good nick after a few years.

Both the ones you've linked I'm sure would be fine, I don't know that it's worth blowing too much cash on them for 'developmental benefits', as at this age the bright colours, sounds and textures are all you need, though that's sort of subjective.

We got a second hand one off fb market place (rigorous antibac procedure applied) to be at grandparent's house that had a keyboard to kick like the first one and that went down a storm.

This. I think we went even cheaper and found an Amazon branded one. It was very useful for 3 months or so and now it is all about the "jumparoo" that was acquired from Gumtree and anti-bacc'ed. There is a huge market for rotating these kinds of things where I am...

That's the same price as the one with the keyboard. I'm going to go with the keyboard one from John Lewis for £40.

I actually advocate going second hand for everything bar a car seat however with Covid I'm not willing to take the risk with something that will be in close proximity to a baby and the hassle of cleaning it to save what a tenner after petrol costs?

I just got the day and night prep machine with a new filter and a new bottle still sealed second hand for £45 Vs £100 new so that was worth the 15 minute drive.

Sounds good and I agree, I'd probably opt for the same if I were you.

You do have to be quiet careful doing the used approach as like dLockers says, there's a fair bit of churn and you're likely the 4th or 5th person to own it in some circumstances. So you've got to check pretty thoroughly on things with parts that might go wrong.

Also very true. The jumparoo is a bit more like a 'tiny hoparoo' as the elastic is on its last legs :p

Edit: A big saving was on the high chairs though. Can't remember the brand. Wooden ones where you can buy all the accessories. They are pretty premium anyway but savings to be had.

Got it from Smyth's instead because free delivery. So less than £40 new John Lewis wanted £3.50 extra.

I normally get stuff from there. It's shut though due to lockdown. I think they sell stuff online and on eBay too but I think it's all stopped at the moment. It's a charity and they give stuff away to low income families and refugees too so it's good to support small independent shops like this.

Good to know we can agree on other things than snowmen!

Guess you mean a tripp trapp? We got our second one for 30 quid, latest version and in good condition. You've got to be quick though, there's plenty of beaters on gumtree overpriced for months but the good ones at a good price will get snapped fast. But yeah that's about the best 2nd hand bargain possible. You might save even more in pound terms rather than percentage on say a pram, but on that you have got moving parts and things which will be degraded whereas the tripp trapp takes all of 2 minutes to know how much life it's got left.

Possibly - rings a bell. A friend locally snapped up 2 and gave us one for the reasons you stated I think.

I think I missed a trick on prams. Went relatively mid-market for a full kit (seat, moses that is overnight sleepable, car seat) (800ish) but she has all but grown out of it and would prefer a McLaren buggy I think. I understand these are two a penny on GT too.

We did 2nd hand for pram, a Joolz Day which included both bassinet and pushchair and has worked really well, really good bit of kit. Different brand baby seat went in with 20 quid adapters so that was good. Think it was 210 compared to brand new price of 800 odd and still going great on number two now.

For a bigger pushchair we bit the bullet and got a folding silver cross one for something like 100. Funny how sometimes you just think it's worth getting one for new.

Our pram was £150 from the shop I linked above. Brand new £850 but ours also came with every accessory including snow wheels which were brand new still and £75 new alone. So probably £1200 for everything new.

It had been steam cleaned by the shop fully tested for safety and cleanliness. All the stuff they get that's in bad condition gets given away for free to low income families so only the good stuff they sell in the shop.

Car seat I went for one that tested in the top tiers of that German crash testing company £300 new but does from newborn until 4 possibly longer can't remember.
