OcUK Dadsnet thread

FWiW with regards to volume, i've not turned the tv down when the kids are in bed and they've never woken up because its too loud, even when watching an action film. I do remember them waking up with creaky floorboards when they were young but fortunately they outgrew that.
Funny isn't it, my son wakes up when i open the bedroom door to go to work, but the TV wont wake him.
Best thing i got was smart bulbs great when your putting him to bed and have no free hands, "Alexa George light on", have a Nest Protect on the landing which has a light with motion sensor and that's been a godsend as well, its just bright enough to see where your going.

yeah we use a google home mini with a routine of "Its $CHILDS bedtime now". It turns up the volume and plays rain noises on repeat for a few hours. Much easier than trying to do everything manually.

Not sure if I'm too early to the party but after my "Steps to buys first home" thread located here; https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/steps-to-buying-first-home.18849746/ I thought I would start reading this thread to see what it's like.

Baby is due 14th November, we've not seen the midwife yet (we go Monday 15th April) so we paid for a "Reassurance scan" ourselves and went on Friday. I must say, as a first time dad to be, it was an amazing sight, not too much to see really at 8/9 weeks but you could still see the baby, I was choking up when I was listening to baby's heartbeat. Told our families over the weekend too, everyone is so happy for us but I didn't expect anything less. Been looking at bits and bobs we need and 3-in-1 travel systems (lovely prices ). A long time to go yet but I can imagine it comes around faster than you think, plus, with buying a house it'll fly-by.

Great quality, and not the silly prices of others.

We went to the "baby show" at Birmingham NEC. I was dubious at first but when there, all the traders and companies are thrusting freebies into our hands in the hope you get hooked on their products. We came home with a car boot full of free stuff and lots of nappies and bottles. We also put in an order for a 3in1 travel system there. RRP was about £1000, we got the lot for less than £600. The advantage to going there was that there were hundreds of different prams to get your hands on and "test drive" :D

Also if you're on Amazon they do a baby list and when you buy so many items of that list you get some freebies.
There are the bliss packs as well that you pick up in the supermarkets.
Keep an eye out for an Aldi baby event, there nappies are great and we always get a full box of wet wipes.
Amazon again have wetwipes and such on the prone sales for very good prices.
You can never have too many wet wipes.

Get yourselves booked on a baby specific first aid course as well.

Oh and my number one tip don't buy the infant paracetamol buy the 6+ one and use half as much. Its the same price or less, so it works out at half the price. From memory you use 2ml instead of 5.

Congrats! We're working to a very similar timeframe for our first (early Nov), we saw the midwife last week and also went for a reassurance scan at a place in Shepshed, they were great actually and it was amazing to hear the heartbeat totally agree!

One tip that I cant see mentioned @byeo is to buy a Tommee Tippee Bottle Prep.. we had one downstairs and one upstairs for the midnight feeds - what an absolute life saver of a product. Can be hand on Amazon for £35 so wait till they drop in price.

Definitely a great time saving gadget. Georges milk is ready mixed now so just gets put in the microwave for 30 seconds.

We were advised against those as you cant properly get to the tubes inside the machine, there are test studies available on the internet were they found mould and the like in the tubes.

We bought one, then breast fed only. Took it back, they're expensive :D

Rubbish - 6/8 screws at the back if you ever need to get at the tubes (to check). Which I did once when we passed the machine on to a family member.
Clean it regularly and it'll be fine. You're only going to get mould in the tubes from standing water. Ours was cleaned regularly as recommended and was perfectly fine after 11months or so use.

Subjective. ~£35 to me for not having to go downstairs 3 times a night every night for a few months was worth every penny.

Get mrs to breastfeed, its easier :D (and free).

Thanks for all the responses, the bottle prep machine looks good, we already have a Tommee Tippee complete feeding set as it was on offer at £64.99 so my parents picked it up for us yesterday.

Perfect prep here too. Marvellous invention! Worth every penny. :)

We've got their big electric steam steriliser too.

Both I would rebuy in a heartbeat.

We picked up some baby freebies the other day and it came with loads of flyers and coupons and one was for the Baby Show at the NEC, think it was a discounted price or maybe 2 for 1, I can't remember. Is it worth going then? It would be nice to have a day wandering around looking at things, test driving prams and getting a load of freebies in the process. Tickets aren't exactly cheap and parking is just as much .

I must admit I wished I had one if those things during the nights I waited for the kettle to boil and then soaking the bottle in cold water to cool it back down, all while Riley cried upstairs.

That said, I think we may have broken the back of the late night awakenings (not that prepping bottles is a thing anymore). She was 3 yesterday and she hasn't come into us for a few days now, and it's getting rare that she does.
