OcUK Dadsnet thread

We picked up some baby freebies the other day and it came with loads of flyers and coupons and one was for the Baby Show at the NEC, think it was a discounted price or maybe 2 for 1, I can't remember. Is it worth going then? It would be nice to have a day wandering around looking at things, test driving prams and getting a load of freebies in the process. Tickets aren't exactly cheap and parking is just as much .

We paid £15 a ticket and you get parking for free with that, you won't need to pay it. In my opinion, it's definitely worth going just to test the prams at least. Then all the free stuff is welcome. We were really cheeky and just kept going back for repeat handouts :D the only things we bought below were the Dr Brown's bottles and feeding cushion, sad but I was so chuffed I took a photo...

Just use your head and don't be suckered into the "you must buy this if you want to be a decent parent" sell that pretty much every seller of baby things seem to adopt! They pretty much guilt trip us and that's why so many people end up with a heap of crap they don't need.

I had to laugh at the "award winning" bibs!! "what award?" I asked. "what is so good about your bibs compared to these on the next stall?". Turns out it was their own award for just being great :D

I'd rather make each bottle on demand than risk bacteria lying about. The machine could be standing around unused for a substanstial amount of time and it is easy to forget to "clean" it. Let's be honest, how many times do you unscrew the back and thoroughly clean the tubes?

The crap we brought, I swear we brought **** that I've never seen since purchasing.

My friend is having a child in August and was begging me to talk his missus out of remortgaging the house to buy prams.

I think the biggest waste was a steam cleaner, one accidental turn on without the right amount of water and it killed itself. Was replaced by a sealable bucket full of milton.

We found the little microwave bags pretty easy. No giant tub of Milton hanging around then.

Tommy tippee prep machine and bottle steriliser are awesome, worth their weight in gold.

And a really good quality video monitor (don't buy a cheaper one) excellent for peace of mind without obsessive checking.

Need to be a right tight arse not to get them.

you dont clean it - its got an Anti-bacterial filter
the only ones people reported as having bacteria in the tubes was from using knock off cheapo filters that were not proper anti-bacterial ones

Yeah, I am looking into picking one of these up, any recommendations?

May I recommend this hello baby monitor.

Along with this monitor holder.

The holder is invaluable. I got so fed up trying to prop the camera up in a decent position without fear of it falling into his cot and the wires wrapping him up. Otherwise we'd have to settle on a useless side view of his head, staring into his ear lugs :D Further, you can easily unclamp it and take it away with you anywhere. We almost felt like bad parents one weekend we stayed in a hotel and had the monitor sat on the bar whilst we drank the place dry :D

We use ours to see if the kids are/were sat up. If they were then they would likely be getting out of bed. Just piece of mind, and quite frankly theres no other way to hear the kids when were downstairs.
Same for us. We can sit and relax downstairs and just keep an eye on him for if he wakes up and needs putting back down. Same for when we stay over at the grandparents or like the hotel example above. I'd say for us it was a must buy. Mind you, other people swear on auto baby rockers and the tomee tippee prep machine and we have had absolutely no use for them. You just find what works for you, every baby is different.

There's the difference and probably why we never unboxed ours. He's never in bed unless we are.

Good luck sir!

I think I'm going to need it! the first couple of weeks will be a roller coaster as it is with any new life that comes into your family but things will soon settle down and we will get into a routine, slightly different with two though, then again we have done it 3 times already just not two in one go :D

Oh and yes I am going to have the snip now, it was only suppose to be 4 not 5 kids :p

We talked about more kids last night originally we definitely wanted more than one. The wife is scared of a repeat of the first time, even though people have told her it was a 1 in a million chance.
Me on the other hand, not so much scared of it happening again, more that i wouldn't necessarily make the same choices again.

RE Baby Monitors

I bought a 1080 Network Security Cam (Amcrest) that acts as a baby monitor and CCTV for when we're away. Records to my NAS, 2 way microphone/speaker, IR for Nighttime, Full PTZ control. Has been solid over Wifi (can hard wire too).

Thanks for the links @Minstadave Will have a read,

All this chat about prepping bottles and boiling water to sterilise the powder... Am I the only muggins that pays extra for ready mixed formula? By some crude maths I did, it's about 80% more expensive than buying powdered, but 1000% more convenient. No boiling water, no tommy tippee machine taking up half the kitchen. We tried powders for a bit but the milk always looks a bit gammy and our son never really liked it as much. It also looked really dodge if put back in the fridge for a couple of hours. I know that's supposed to be a no-no in any situation, but we've always done that with premixed formula and never once had a problem.

We just sterilise the bottles using the plastic microwave sterilisers which are great.

Ours in on prescription stuff, which has recently been changed to this stuff.

£11 for 4 x 200ml, glad im not paying for it.

Still goes in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm it up. Its good for 6 hours after opening as well.

Definitely handy though, when out and about just ask for a jug of boiling water. In an emergency and hes starving he will take some of it cold. Surprised he has any though it tastes like sick.
