OcUK Dadsnet thread

A few local parents have told me about it as well, I think to some degree it's so they can make a judgement call about what kind of issues they might face and try to resolve any potential attendance issues etc before the kids start.

Yeah pretty much this.

My daughter is 18 and just been accepted into the Met police as an apprentice. She is currently doing a 6 week induction and will start full time after the summer holidays. She has her own section housing so will be coming back home during the odd weekends. I thought it would be great to have a bit of space in the house but it actually feels empty. We still have our 6 year old son at home but it does feel a bit odd. Like something is missing. Boy time flies!

Does anyone have a Toniebox on a Ubiquiti Wi-Fi?
I got one for my little one for Xmas and got it working with the Wi-Fi. A month ago it has dropped off the Wi-Fi and I cannot get it to rejoin. Even with a complete factory reset it will only work with a Wi-Fi hotspot on a phone.
Toniebox support is comically bad, they clearly don't even read the support emails properly. I've provided full details of what I have done to try and get it working on a dedicated 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network and explained that it fails to accept the provided password (a misleading error that actually means it cannot connect to the Wi-Fi network for some other reason).

Their (canned) response... "As an alternative, it is also possible to get connected via a mobile hotspot." and then proceeds to list the instructions I've already had to follow to get it working to start with.

Hi guys,

First post in here. My son is 8 and he's started going out by himself, it's a quiet rural area so I'm not too concerned but is there something you can get like a watch or something you can put on him then see where he is on your phone, or something like that?

AirTag or similar - they rely on someone nearby having an Apple device it can connect via Bluetooth to update the server though.

It’ll have to be something with a data connection at the very least.

I used an airtag for my kid's bag when they started going to school, but tbh I found it mostly unhelpful. It would frequently tell me where they were 20 minutes ago etc, which I guess is handy if you're trying to figure out where your luggage got to, but less useful for figuring out where a kid is.

Its downfall is that work by connecting to any other Apple device in range, so if no-one at the school has an iPhone (unlikely) it won’t be able to transmit its position.

Yeah, it was really for the journey to and from school that I was concerned about - I had anticipated that it would be quite effective on the roads with all the other cars driving nearby and past with iphones in them, but not the case.

So I am thinking if Budforce is in a quiet rural area, might be similarly disappointing.

Ok cheers guys, I'll have a think.

I don't really want to get him a phone only because I don't want him anywhere near the internet, not yet anyway.

I know you can get ones you can lock down.

Infact if anyone has any ideas on a mega basic phone I can put live 360 on or whatever then completely lock everything down so it effectively doesn't do anything except make phone calls and maybe text message I guess.

Don't go down the route of a locked smart phone in case you do get steered that way. Not from experience, but I imagine a kid at school having a smart phone, but is locked out, might create issues.

But a dumb phone with tracking isn't a bad idea..

The air tag idea suggested, would it not refresh if the son also had a apple watch? Does that not get the data/Bluetooth done that the airtag needs?

My neighbour has some smart collar on their cats. No idea the cost or how it works, but they say they can track location, temperature etc of the cat. Perhaps one of those in a bag?

Just off the top of my head, I’d assume it would have to be one with a SIM card in it otherwise it would also have no way of connecting to the network if outside of Bluetooth range. That’s going to be fairly expensive to stick on an 8 year old…

Turns out the Mrs got an old smart phone, some cheap Chinese honor something.....

Anyway, I wiped it and put the parental control thing on it and just basically locked everything down apart from phone calls, text message and Google maps.

I tested it and turns out through google parental thing, if I open Google maps on my phone, I can see where it is.

I'll get him a SIM card today and he can have that for only when he goes out.

He's only 8, he doesn't need his own phone and we are really against young kids having them. We live in a quiet place, and his mates are always down the park. The park is quite literally 100 yards from the house in our village. His mates are a bit older but I spoke to all their parents who said they started letting their kids out about that age.

As you can imagine small village everyone knows everyone, so I could get hold of his mates parents etc.

It's on the strict condition, that he is either in the park, going directly between home and there and that's it , no where else.

I didn't start going out on my own until I was about 10, but I grew up in North London.

He loves going to the park and playing with his mates, and it's really important and I'd much rather him doing that than sitting there watching YouTube or similar, just means usually I have to sit there for hours in the evening, which I don't mind doing but I think he will be ok now.

Any recommendations on paddling pools? I know it's usually the kind of thing you just get from the middle aisle in lidl but keen to ask anyway,or what to look out for.

We got ours from Argos if it helps. Just remember that the size of it on the picture is usually way bigger than reality. :p
