OcUK Dadsnet thread

All of a sudden both our kids are in school. Where did that time go?! Youngest seems to be enjoying it so far and there are some kids from his nursery and younger siblings that he knows, so it’ll make the transition easier. Logistics of pick up and drop off at a single location is going to be a game changer!

Our son having started school this week is enjoying it. It’s surreal moment seeing him hike in the afternoons in his school uniform.

I do not like school drop off. Some parents are very entitled and disregard all traffic rules and parking restrictions.

I imagine everyone starts with good intentions and then once they realise everyone else doesn't care, they join in. And the cycle continues endlessly as each new generation start good and slowly turn entitled

The twins started reception last week. It went pretty well. Our girl has had a bit of a barmy about going tomorrow - oddly enough our boy seems much more positive.

Having a bit of an existential crisis this week as my youngest has now started secondary school. That is a milestone to be celebrated, but it means that ~ 15 years of walking to nursey/school every morning has now ended as both the kids walk themselves to the bus stop to secondary school every day. I cherished that morning walk to school with them as a little 1-1 time, but it also "started" my day. Forced me to get showered, dressed etc.

The result is I'm feeling really lost in the mornings now, as they leave for school at 7:45am and I don't start WFH until 8:45am - I'm just bumming around the house. I need to find a new routine.

To the other Dad's out there - enjoy those moments with them as they grow because before too long they'll be starting the next chapter in their lives without you :)

WFH today, and first time getting them ready myself as Mrs Dog is at work. Had them both ready with ten minutes to spare plus dishwasher emptied, filled and on.

Got to school and my boy had a meltdown. Got him into the 'quiet room', got him distracted and then snuck out. His cries of "I want Daddy' is definitely not fun.

I walked my son to nursery for two years. He started reception last week and we drive there as it’s a little far to walk.

I WFH and now need to get a new routine. We used to get him to nursery by 07:30. I’m now having to drop him off at school at 08:30. So we have a whole hour that I previously didn’t have. I am still getting up at 05:30. And work starts at 09:00.

So yea new routine time. Which will change again when we have our second (Mrs is due in March)

Son has hand, foot and mouth.

The front door is marked, a sacrifice has been made, numerous deities prayed to.

Now we wait.

Feel for you! Managed to dodge it but our wee man has had crusty eyes and drops the last few days. I don't feel like I've been well for the best part of a month, then tonight as his eyes are starting to improve he's projectiled everywhere a handful of times, his room is screwed! Knew it would happen at some point but my god, finding yourself starting to throw up because your kid has, not my proudest moment for sure.

Worst non serious disease I've ever caught, couldn't eat or talk for a week. Daughter on the other hand looked horrible and painful but was completely non fussed by it

I got this almost 2 years ago - hadn’t even heard of it before and when my OH mentioned it I just gave her a funny look and started talking about cows…

Anyway, we think I picked it up from licking too many windows at Bristol Aquarium the week before when we took our then 6 month old.

Best part? He didn’t get it.

Our wee one had it recently but thankfully not too bad compared to some of the other babies in the group, we managed to dodge it completely!

Our daughter got sent home from nursery with it a couple of weeks ago. Our hearts dropped as we've had it in the house plenty before. However she was right as rain the rest of the day and completely fine the next morning too. They'd diagnosed it off a tiny mark on her hand that disappeared after a few hours - and the fact that it is going round a bit.

Fortunately they didn't give any resistance to my anti-diagnosis and took her back in the next day.

Still praying we don't end up with it.

Same for us with our daughter starting school, I think we're mostly there adapting to the new routine but it definitely took a while for all of us after the last few years of the nursery routine. We were usually out of he house by 7.40 for nursery - now it's 8.35 because school is so close and we don't need to worry about breakfast clubs!

It has been nice to have breakfast as a family most mornings, my wife is in London 2 days so will usually be out the door before 7am - so those mornings have become the 'bacon sandwich and TV mornings' and a slightly mad dash for school!
