OcUK Forums Changes

Has anyone mentioned the ability to display your PC specs in the 'View Public Profile' page? That would be very handy indeed, especially if you don't have your specs in your signature.

Given that this is a forum linked to a high-end PC component shop and is therefore mainly based around that subject, would it be possible to have a separate drop down link from a users name to display a specially formatted 'PC Specification' page of some description?

It would be good if you could see your own record, i.e. when you get a warning, or a don, mod etc says something to the ocuk team about you, would be good if you could view it and decide yourself weather or not to show everyone else.

A change to the theme, nothing special, just something different, some sort of effect, id like to see split forums for consoles i.e.

xbox:
console
game
problems
xbox live

ps3:
console
game
problems
ps3 online

etc... would be cool.

A very own car forum would be brilliant, as its a very varied market it would be good if, like the general discussion cars had there own,

general discussion
cars
pics
car music etc, that might be fun, and sport would be better if broken up.

i.e. footy
rugby
nfl etc, you may find what you want then, you could always put stuff like this on a trial, as your the owner, creater you can do what you like so..

just because i have lots of suggestions above dosnt mean i dont like the forum! dont ban me! :P

a section for personal issues would be good...

and also like people have stated above, needless spec me crap threads are annoying, get the needless one banned i.e. 'spec me a sock to jizz in' why... just inflames into a spam thread as people take the **** and you know they will and do as thats the nature of a lot of people here, quick witted and here to have a giggle.

Id also like to be able to delete old threads.

It might be fun if you got into the media market aswel. you wont need to hire reporters as you have your very own community of people with news!!!

have it on a main page, news - forum, have like a flash box stating todays news, interesting facts, new things on the market, happenings around.... and then links to that subject which will have its own thread.

-An Olive branch of some kind extended to those who feel they have been wronged, one that comes with a return policy however as im sure there are two sides to every coin

-An Adult section/paid members, for adults only to discuss PG13/15/18 related issues (nothing illegal obv) where "swearies" are allowed. Sometimes GD has some very adult related threads and it seems silly these are allowed and swear words not, this would solve that problem and make GD more acceptable for under 18's

-A more transparent form of Moderating with both sides of a Story told.

-PM's enabled.

-Underbosses to take care of the influx of rubbish we sometimes get (although lately its been well managed)

-A Help/Advice section of thread for the various issues and threads that come up that arn't PC related that clutter GD

willd58 has some very valid arguments there, over 18's should be able to have there own space to speak about issues that relate to people over 18, a bank transfer of 1p would be valid to confirm ones age.

Wasnt pm's disabled due to bandwith or storage or something like that? im sure it was discussed a while back, very valid reason to not enable them but i just cant remember it.

I know its a very closely guarded and moderated forum and is designed for all ages to see but maybe we should have some room to talk about anything we want, within reason like.. but would be good to do so.

But ive seen somewhere in this thread about putting a lot of these in a poll and seeing how popular they are, i know it would take a while, but it would be worth it, it would also be good if we had a quiz or something weekly, that would be fun, would help keep the forum very active, as it is already, would encourage people to come more, and more of that online poker that went on last xmas, that was fun, although i got nailed... was fun.

anyway, bedtimes calling, interview tomorrow in leeds!!

night all.

things i'd enjoy seeing:

Avatar based on length of membership, instead of post count.
explantations on bans/suspensions/thread deletions.
Signatures staying exactly as they are.
relaxed rules on swearing. Since when is the word **** (alternate for faeces) a heinious crime? I even say that to my teachers (some of them)

Few more Avatars keeping in theme with what we have now.

Tweaks to the Members Market. ie until you have 5+ positive feedback it will be expected that you should post / pay first. But this can be overridden by the other member not having a problem with this. Most MM issues could have been avoided by just doing a bit of research from the person you are buying from. I would never rush in on a big deal with someone with very little trust personally, yet I've seen this happen before, and I just think that they kinda asked for it sometimes...

PMs being enabled for long time members / high postcount / high trust / generally nice people!?

Laptop subforum.

A dedicated shop discussion subforum. Especially useful for asking when things are going to be in stock etc.

A 18+ section would be interesting, not sure how you could go about it though!

Please no change to signature images! Maybe 2 lines of text under the image though....

I even say that to my teachers (some of them)
One of my lecturers last semester talking about the forbidden C word in a lecture with about 200 people in it. "I don't mind people saying **** out loud, I do have one after all"

1). A relaxation on 'competitors' in the consoles section. The constant hinting of competitors etc.. is tiresome and rather than remove it, just allow it. People know Overclockers sell consoles (it's mentioned underneath the consoles link), however, by not selling games then competitors that sell games should be allowed. Obviously I don't mean rival PC component stores.

2). Several more avatars and an increase in post count required for current ones. Perhaps levels at 500, 1000, 3000, 10000 and 15000 posts. Perhaps more. Whilst I hate it when people use custom ones, seeing so many of the same is also tiresome, especially after many years using the same ones.

3). Custom forum themes - An option to choose different colour themes if you do so wish, but maintaining the current blue as the default.

4). A removal of any 'spec' threads inside General Discussion, I really couldn't give a **** if someone wants a sandwich but isn't sure on the filling, make your mind up! It's called a decision!

5). A harder line on swearing on the forum. I've seen posts with swearing skip by (even with RTM's) and repeat offenders go un-punished.

6). Don't listen to people regarding seperate sections in consoles, it WILL NOT WORK.

7). A few more, non-animated smilies. I can't stand seeing animations on forums, but surely a bit more diversity amongst the faces would be nice.

8). A higher entry level on MM. I've seen countless people spam their way to 250 posts. Something like 500-1000 would be nicer, or duration, say 1 year if you have less posts.

9). Something I was talking about with someone the other day, splitting the graphics away from programming. I believe graphics would be more popular without all the programming threads in there.

10). Merge the Mobile Phones and General Discussion together, as OcUK don't sell them and it's not something media wise such as music, movies or games, surely Mobile Phones would work well in GD and most people would get better feedback anyway.

11). The ability to RTM quicker than 60 seconds, I'm quick y'knarr :p.

12). Another Don more involved in games. Zefan has done a fantastic job and has been an absolute revelation, but it could do with another presence as it's a bit of a warzone at times and with bigger game releases and the christmas sales rush coming it will be a nightmare.

13). A one more chance for banned members (unless of course they were banned for doing something really bad, say spamming all the e-mail addresses of users etc..), but for some legendary posters and some who made errors the chance to come back. Everyone deserves one more chance, surely? With a bigger presence, anyone stepping out of line will be quickly dealt with.

14). A hall of shame, so we can see who is banned/suspended and what for. Also, banned/suspended members can check this rather than complaining time and time again that they've not recieved an e-mail about it - this would also stop the problems of registering years back with an ISP e-mail address you no longer have.

15). A limit of 25kb per signature. Everyone has broadband these days and the amount of pre-made, auto updating signatures that are a shade over 20kb is scary. It's a minor update, but people wouldn't notice it and it would be nicer to those who have limitations at 20kb.

Tighten up on things a bit Moderators please. If you swear, suspend them for 48 hours straight away, no warnings, their is absolutely no need to swear on these forums, no excuse what so ever. If when they come back from their holiday they swear again, permanent ban them. Most people on these forums should be grown up enough to take the first warning seriously, if they contiue to swear, they deserve to be gone for ever.

*sigh* lighten up Point Dexter, some people swear without meaning to and then usually see it and edit it out, there's no need to get Nazi about it.

The only thing I'd like to see is proper implementation of the infraction feature as it has great potential.

Yeah it's a good feature, and very handy as you set up a god system for what points = what restriction placed on users and for how long. It's easy to make it unbalanced though, but I suppose with the different way this forum works an infraction system specific to the section the user was infracted in (ie: you get infracted in the GPU section for fanboyism that would mean 5 points + 3 days restriction form the GPU area. Another 5 points = 7 days restriction from that area. 20 points in a single month (you can set expiry) could mean an auto-months suspension from the section. You ge the gist, its very customiseable.

Consistent moderating.

I see many threads were for example, two people are trolling, or personal attacks start flying, and the person who starts the whole thing and won't let it drop ends up not being warned, nothing.

But the guy being attacked who gets a bit too upset, ends up being warned or suspended.

Both should receive punishment in these cases, but I see a lot of situations where it doesn't happen.

Seems to be doing alright atm. There's a good focused blend between PC stuff and other stuff. Good moderation.

If I was to say the only down side is a feel of it being a little sterile but I think that's down to the fact that there's only so many subjects in SC you can discuss in life!

I'd like to see more music & film stuff but starting up a OcUK review site would be additional costs that wouldn't really benifit the PC sales aspect of OcUK. If you're branching out into music/film then it would be useful - especially if it was to become the defacto place for film talk (technical film talk not hollywood gossipmongering).

-An Olive branch of some kind extended to those who feel they have been wronged, one that comes with a return policy however as im sure there are two sides to every coin

There are one or two members I'd like to see return, who I actively miss on these forums: iCraig and CBS, off the top of my head. VIRII seemed all out for attention and seemed to enjoy for the sake of it, though.

We already have GD, which is already being treat like a cesspit - this is demonstrated by going round some thread, looking at the quality of threads, and how many people have been suspended for swearing, abuse, etc.

All allowing a forum that allows swearing is going to do, is to promote anger. Maybe if you'd said for crude jokes, the odd XXX picture/link - they're the things people might appreciate more than being allowed to swear.

-A more transparent form of Moderating with both sides of a Story told.

Agree with you here. Sometimes a user is banned, without any reason whatsoever. Sometimes it's because they've gone "to the other side" - aka: That anti-OcUK site, where they currently seem to be trying to smother out a fire.

-PM's enabled.

Maybe, but the forums can run slow as it is sometimes. Not to mention the likely increase in Spie's bandwidth bill. :p

-Underbosses to take care of the influx of rubbish we sometimes get (although lately its been well managed)

Not too sure on this. We've had Underbosses before, but Spie removed them for whatever reason. I'd say the UB's were just glorified members, with access to the hidden forums.

-A Help/Advice section of thread for the various issues and threads that come up that arn't PC related that clutter GD

Amen to that. I'm getting fedup seeing the very immature threads - ie: spec me a bog roll, spec me which hand to wipe my rear with. It's getting beyond pathetic. Perhaps it's a good idea to keep those children, who don't know how to think for themselves, in one area.

Do you mean the yellow and red cards?

Yep that's the infraction feature.
Seeing as you're possibly the only one it's been used on what do you think of it, does it make it any clearer as to why you've been pulled up?:)

Having PMs enabled would make it almost impossible to effectively mod the forum.
All talk of competitors and their current prices etc would just get PM'ed and so would personal attacks and stuff.
If it's all hidden it can't be acted on, some of it no doubt goes on via emails but there's nothing can be done about that:)

lower the sig sizes to 300x75 (shouldn't take me more than 60 seconds to make a new one :D )

have more avatars for 10,000 and maybe 50,000 (and one for the ladies as requested above :) )

possibly a 'thank' system

I think that feature needs using more. There's been times in the past I've not even noticed when I've had a warning or a post deleted because threads can move so quickly.

Of course, I've been a bit more of a good boy lately. :p

Agreed, Been here for quite a long while but don't post too often.
Agreed. Some people, like me, just talk too much. Not a sign of "experience" at all.

Does that help explain it better then?;)
