As the title really............

I'm totally fed up with Maxtors, they're crap. I've replaced 13 in the last year now and it's getting to be beyond the joke. Everytime I get a phone call from a friend or family member asbout their PC's not booting etc, I get there and what do I find but a "maxtor" HDD inside the case, either not working at all or creating major problems.

Rant over!

I aint had any problems with them. But i have seen a lot of people complain about them.

I've never, and I mean ever had a HDD fail on me. I've had bad sectors & clusters etc, and have lost some data in the past from these problems but never total failure....Until Maxtor that is!

No offence, but I'm sure there will be people out there who can say EXACTLY the same thing about any other HDD manufacturer!

Admittedly Maxtor seem to have had more than their fair share of complaints recently - but there will be people with bad experiences of other drives - and also people who have had maxtor drives for years and never had a problem.

If that's true, then why are the biggest manufacturer of PC's considering dropping them because of the number of complaints. And also bear in mind that Maxtor came bottom in the recent consumer satisfaction survey regarding HDD's and Hitachi were top.

And before you ask. no I can't find the link. I've seen it and read it but i've been looking all week. But i'm sure smids could point you in the right direction.

I've got a couple of D540x (?) IDE Maxtors and two DM10 Sata drives and they're all fine - especially the D540's as they are probably over 5 years old by now?

Incidentally, I have had failures in the past with IBM (just out of warranty), Seagate (in warranty and exchanged) and then the exchanged Seagate drive failed some 11 months later !!

Have only purchased Maxtor since although the next drive I get may well be Samsung (for quietness in a Media Centre PC) :)

I've had 4 dead maxtors over 3 years, mostly my own fault I think, as I had a poorly ventilated case until recently and they tended to run 'warm'! Nothing shortens the working life of HDs like high temperatures (50 or higher is bad). I've got one now in another machine, with good airflow, and it's 38-40deg so I'm hoping it will be OK.

All my drives are maxtor. Not a single one has failed. Neither one i've put in a build either.

Hate to say it, but you're probably doing something very wrong.

Well, I've got 2 Maxtors running perfectly in this machine :p
If 13 drives have failed though, there must be something wrong somewhere, and there is no way it'll be the drives. I'd be much more inclined to point the finger at poor case ventilation causing overheating.

Remeber the Deathstars? Want OCUK to stop stocking IBM/ Hitachi disks?!

Rememer out of the 13 only 2 were mine and they're in a coolermaster tonado case with 8x80mm fans. To give you an idea my CPU (2500+ Barton) running at 2.2ghz is idling at 18 deg and up to 30 deg under load. So there is no bad ventilation in my PC.

Of the other 11, 3 have been in Dell's and 4 in Mesh PC's. The others are various others that I can't remember.

As I said previously, I have never had a HDD fail on me or a friend before, but now i've had 13 in 2 years all Maxtors. Make of it what you will!

Ok put it this way - take that SAME group (you and your friends) and ask:

"during that same period how many OTHER manufacturers drives could we have had fail?"

For example: If between you and your friends - you all had 20 maxtors and 2 seagates during that 2 year period - then what is the chance that you'll see a maxtor fail in comparison to a seagate?

I'm not saying that anyone should expect to see that many hard drives fail in such a short period of time - BUT the more drives you have belonging to one manufacturer, then the more chance you'll have of seeing one of their drives fail!!

I've always used Maxtors, the two 120gb backup drives I use have been dropped, covered in dust, left at the bottom of a box of bits for over a year and they still work perfectly, the only drives that have ever caused me problems are Western Digital and IBM (now Hitachi from what I gather)

I have to comment here. All drives WILL fail at some point, however it does seem a trend that Maxtors OF LATE have been very poorly constructed and thus fail a fair bit more than other drives.

People always go on about the Deathstars - that was 2 models, the GXP75 and the GXP60 and that was a flaw in the design/head component used. All their other drives are fine.

Maxtor do indeed make good drives, they are often fast but they are also louder and hotter than most. Their SCSI line is excellent e.g. Atlas but their consumer sector has been very poor of late, most noticeably with the DM10's and DM9's. One need only peruse the storage review survey to see this. All other manufacturers do have their problems but it would seem that lately Maxtor's have a higher chance of failure than most. Seagates and Hitachi's are the seemingly better constructed drives and fail much less often than Maxtors. Western Digital also are having bad problems with failures I've noticed (RE and Raptor drives excluded) - no one manufacturer is excluded but I personally wouldn't buy a Maxtor as I want to get the best there is right now, namely Seagate or Hitachi.

The only drive i had fail on me was a seagate, but that was because some plum packed it to me in and open jiffy bag, inside a box with no padding.

But thats the sort of 'service' you get from these amazing massive online e-tailors. I think you can probably gather the one im talking about.
