OcUK Poker Thread.

gl. ive had a terrible day today playing the $10 sit and goes

I often get days like that. I'm due a nice payout so this will suit me just fine, $1.1k for the winner.

900 chips going in every hand and i'm getting DOG cards. Down to 52k atm.

25 left now.. some french geezer flattening anything in his way with suckouts galore.

21 left.. went down to 20k, called with KJ on 10-3-4-K-A board, he showed A6 for a 60k pot. Pushed with A8 suited, called by 27 but held up.

Salami, rail for me more please, you're my good luck charm ;)

HOLY COW.. had the craziest few hands. K9 spades, Flop 9-10-J, 2 spades, flush on turn, 120k pot. Then had KK 3 times since and won with them all. I'm on 212k now!

10 left now, massive gap between top 2 and the rest, they have 1.5m between them, rest of us barely have 1m!
Took us half a bloody hour to get to the final table. Thanks Salami for your support :)

3 way shove, I have AK against AK against 10-10 but have them covered, 10's hold up, 7 left, I'm back up to 230k after flopping a set.

5 left now, guaranteed $330 - CL has 1.7m, 2nd 269k, me 220k, 4th 205k, 5th 50k.

Shorty doubled up, CL raised as usual to 32k, I made it 95k with A6, he called. Flop comes AJ2, I'm all in, 500k pot, he shows A-10 and takes it. $328 for 5th place :)

Apologies for the running commentary, was quite a rush getting that deep into a tourny and getting a nice return!

Nice one el dazza :)

Must try harder next time :p

I really could've got 2nd but I think being super tired didn't help my play. I'd never even contemplated such an an ambitious re-raise.

Had a real up-and-down day playing .50/1NL cash, went up to 400, down to 280 and I'm now on 342 thanks to my BB being J8 on a J89 flop, I raised a $3 bet to $7.75, turn was a Q which was check check, river comes a J for my boat, he bets $11, i raise to $37 and he calls, was slowplaying his straight :D

Since changing over to Pokerstars about 3 months ago I have been holding my own but going nowhere with a ROI of 1%, I have a low boredom threshold online and also a tendency to play when ****ed so break even is no big deal, in live MTT play last year my ROI was over 200% :D

however that tells a simple version of a strange story

EAT MY VARIANCE :D

what happened is that I was enjoying the $16 18 man SNGs but had a shocking run and didn't cash in about 20, TBH as much as I enjoyed them they didn't suit my game, I then changed to $13 6 man Turbos and that is the upswing

Hey guys!

I'm just getting started at this.

I want to play for free for a while to get totally familiar with everything and to practice, but i've been playing a lot on Facebook and it seems when you play for free people take a lot more chances so i'm not sure it will really be much help for long. Is there anymore serious free ways to play?

Also, can anyone recommend any forums or websites with tips and guides for people new to the game?

Especially around the probability of hands etc, and helping to understand the poker lingo :D

got a 2 day game at my house this weekend

£75 with rebuys/add on for first day

20k starting stacks and 1 hr levels

should be great :)

Wardie: I can only help if you intend to play cash games, and if so here's my advice:

Read No Limit Hold'Em Theory and Practice by David Sklansky and Ed Miller

That's all the books you'll ever need :)
Next for forums, I'd recommend FlopTurnRiver or 2+2. Get an account at either one and look for their beginners sections. Either site will have a digest that you can read for a couple of hours to get started.

FlopTurnRiver also has an IRC channel which you can find out about on their forum :)

Cheers :)

I just want to practice a bit first. I've mainly being playing on PokerStars for free.

At the moment i'm not bothering trying to bluff and i'm only playing strong hands pre-flop, and i'm not calling very much after the flop if I don't think i'm going to win.

I've been doing a bit of reading about the odds of cards winning and how to think about the game etc, which is useful.

I actually found Low Limit quite enjoyable the other night as you get to play a lot more hands.

Any thoughts on a good site to start playing at for low money? I like the clean feel of PokerStars but I noticed PKR does really low cost games for newbies, something like $0.01/0.02.

I've been playing on PokerStars free version and i'm at about $1900 after starting with $1000.

I wish it were that simple :D

I despise PKR personally, I'd start at Pokerstars with a $50 deposit and play $0.01/0.02. Pokerstars do a first deposit bonus where they double your deposit if you play enough hands (I can't remember off the top of my head how much you need to play, but you get 3 months to do it so it is easily done).

Don't venture into higher limits (such as $0.02/0.05) until your bankroll reaches ~$100. As a rule you'll want at least 20-25 buyins for whatever stake you're playing at. If you read up and join a couple forums (the two I mentioned earlier have beginner sections with people offering help) you'll be crushing 0.01/0.02 in no time and moving up. Remember to always buy into a table with 100 big blinds - you're not learning poker if you don't buy in properly. As your bankroll goes up you can move up:

$50 - 0.01/0.02 (2NL)
$100 - 0.02/0.05 (5NL)
$250 - 0.05/0.10 (10NL)
$600 - 0.10/0.25 (25NL)

And so on. When you get past $600, consider moving your entire bankroll to Full Tilt Poker, who offer a 100% deposit bonus to $600! Make sure you sign up through an affiliate so you can get rakeback too (I believe 27% is the rate on FTP). Afterwards I'm sure you can work it all out or ask on some dedicated forums.

Also, did I mention you really should be reading that book by Sklansky? :D

Thanks for that.

I didn't say it was as simple as folding after the flop if i'm not going to win, but i've been playing pretty tight as a newbie which I have read a few times is the best thing to do whilst I get to grips with poker.

I'll look into getting the book :)

So you only need £2 at a 0.01/0.02 table?

I'll try and find the book and join the forums tonight and have a skim before depositing some money at PokerStars then.

PKR do the 100% deposit bonus as well.

I seen this mentioned before, do you guys actually play at 4 tables at a time?

I know you fold quite a lot of hands but is this wise? Surely you're going to miss things? I suppose when you're not playing for too much money it's maybe ok, but I think i'll start with 1 table at a time!
