OcUK Poker Thread.

the 2 day pub game was great fun, got 21 players and was lively to say the least

look at the structure and tell me how in produced 54 rebuys and 16 add ons :p

at start of day 2 there were 2.25m chips in play and we were only at 800/1600

didn't come anywhere myself, got all money in pre in a pot that would have made me chip leader but JJ held up

we will hold the outdoor summer game again this year but that already looks like being full but will let you know if any seats come up

DTD have a great one coming up where they are hoping for 1600 players

we still have a monthly pub game so if you fancy that or a DTD trip let me know

How many rebuys and addons? hahaha.

What did you run into JJ with? AT? AQ or a mid pair 77's 88's?

If there is a spare seat, let me know I'll be happy to come along to that.

Bit of a turn of events, you know I said about how I have to get back into this etc? Well, the girlfriend (who doesn't read these forums) surprised me for my birthday yesterday. Bought me a fold out poker table, which sits 8, with cup holders etc; A poker back, so cards and chips and said.... Sort out a poker night for you and your mates. So it appears as though DTD or something similar might happen quicker than I originally thought! :)

next time you're down my neck of the woods, drop me a line and I'll come say hello for a beer.

Hi guys,

I have been playing poker on and off for 2 years now. Recently trying to get back into it. I am not the worse player in the world, I always clear up at games with friends (They don't let me play anymore :(), and I have deposited a couple of times in to FTP (Only very small) but due to impatience/inexperience have lost it. I generally play SnG, and recently bought a book off amazon called Sit n GO Strategy, and it has totally made me realised how terrible I was, and I have learnt a great deal.

Anyways, main point of this post, what rooms do you guys play at? I like Full tilt, but I just don't like it and I can't put my finger on why. Whats the next best poker room for a UK player with rakeback/decent bonuses and a not so impossible first deposit bonus to clear? Also must have good SnG traffic at low stakes (like real low $1 BI)

Thanks in advance.

PokerStars, betfair are quite good for sng's/tournies.

I'm more of a SnG guy myself, usually play around the 6-12$ buy in mark and most of the time. But I pretty much play soley on FTP as its by far the most pleasing of software to use

Nice result with birthday stuff :)

will let you know re summer game but unlikely a seat will come up, we have a monthly game and the pub 2 day one will be held again, both these seats have loads more seats

am in Telford in April but not sure if staying or travelling at moment

I might give pokerstars a try. I do like FT but, I don't know, I have just had terrible terrible luck in the SnGs, losing a monster hand to people shoving crap hands and hitting a straight etc.

In my experience though that's part and parcel of playing at the micro-stakes level, and that's why I play at the slightly higher level as you don't get that kind of **** happening to often. As there is decent money to be won.

People who generally play at micro-stake level are probably just playing for the fun of the game and are aware that they are only putting about 20/30p on the line.

I'd suggest trying to step up to the $5/6 buy in mark and I think you'll see the difference quite quickly, in terms of donk to proper players ratio

I'm not sure how good it is for SnGs, but for cash I always play at 888. FTP and Stars are generally viewed as the toughest places to play at. The reason they are so big is because they are US friendly. As UK players we have the blessing of being to play anywhere we want, so make the most of it. That said, at the stakes you're talking about the play will be terrible wherever!

I never really thought about it that way, I just always played $1 buyins as I saw that as a starting point to working my way up, but yea I suppose it is just going to be full of donks shoving crap hands and lucking out. Maybe I'll stick with full tilt, maybe deposit a larger bank roll and move up to more of a $5 buy in...

Only do that if you're fairly confident in your poker abilities though. The $5 SnGs can eat through your bankroll quite quickly if you have a bad run of tournaments.

Actually I always found the dearer the buy in, the easier it was to place. People throw away money on $5 and $10 sit and go's like confetti. $20 and up i usually place every time, ive played about 20 $100 sit and go's and only failed to place in the top three twice.

Humm. I am reluctant to move up the stakes, as I know down swings are normal but I don't want to go bust. But then again in $1 SnGs I hate being lucked out by morons shoving crap hands and hitting them. Maybe I'll deposit a small ammount into poker stars and see how it goes there. Or maybe Betfair. I tried the free $8 on 888 and the SNG traffic at lower stakes seemed quite slow

The way I started moving up the stakes (was probably 7 or 8 years ago now), was only if i won in the $5 tourny id play a $10, then if i won enough id move to $10 with the same $5 stake, i did this up to $100, i was still effectively playing with the $5 i started with.

Seems like a good technique, but I've just been trying to ensure I have like a number of buyins for my desired stake before moving up a limit. If I do well and I have some buyins for the next limit, I'll move up, and if I lose badly, I'll step back down a limit.

I'm not sure I liked 888's software either. I might take a look at betfair.

Ive always used Victor Chandler, dont particularly like it at the moment.

I do the same - i win, i step up, i lose, i step down. I dont get much time to play these days though, years ago i had a job that let me play 3-4 hours a day and i could clean a fair amount each month.

Hey guys, after 2 years of my friend pestering me to play Poker I have finally taken it up and finding it pretty addictive.

I like playing the SnG turbo tourney's but have found myself wasting money with silly calls when I know there is a big chance I am probably beat. I do find that no matter how tight you play these SnG's there is always going to be that element of luck required, as people start going all in when they have Ace + anything or a high face card.

I found turbno SnGs to be a lot harder. You can't play really tight and wait out for the hands because the blinds will punish you, forcing you to play weaker hands. I can recommend this book here I have only read 50 odd pages and it's already made me realise the dumb stuff I was doing and I have deffo seen an improvement in my play.
