OCUK Reliability Results 2006

Ford Mondeo V-Reg Ghia X 2.0 Auto

Owned: 3.5 years

95k miles at purchase, 129k at sale

Problems:

Auto box went the day after I got it (seller replaced).
A/C needed new compressor.
Cat went, blocking the exhaust which caused the break servo pipe to melt to the engine. Meaning I lost brakes on the M6.
Exhaust replaced.
Starter motor failed.
Small lake in the tyre well.

Plus tyres, break pads and disks and a few bulbs - the usual stuff.

starter motor died - again, replaced with a 2nd hand one
radiator started leaking - had a massive hole in - replaced with a new one

Car : Ford Fiesta ST (2006)

Time owned : 6 Months

Problems : Faulty GEN Module (Alarm issue replaced under warranty)

Car '98 BMW 728i Sport e38.

Mileage 98k when purchased, August 2005.

Routine servicing (Inspection 2) £450 inc two new bottom suspension arms, apparently a common fault with e38's.

Brake pads replaced all round.

ABS electronic gizmo replaced (£400).

Eats tyres. first set (Bridgestone Potenzas) lasted 13k.

Now has Pirelli fronts & Falken rears (Traction control light winks a lot more with the Falkens than it did with the Bridgestones!)

Aircon system seems to have a problem, start the car (the interior glass clear) within seconds it mists up entirely! - leave the car running with the A/C on and it clears. System was re-gassed in the Summer & has had the cabin "pollen filters" replaced.

I think the above is related to a rear cracked light thats 1/2 full of water! I'm assuming the air in the car is damp due to this? - theres no moisture in the boot or around the lights at the rear though.

Mileage now 116,000 nothing else thus far.

I would happily buy another e38 7 Series, but, would go for a V8 / V12 next time. :)

Car: 1998 Ford Mondeo 2.0 (Ghia Estate)
Owned: 7months
Mileage at purchase: 116,000
Current Mileage: 123,000
Purchase price: £850 (with 11months MOT and 6months Tax)

Faults current upon purchase:
N/S/F door lock solenoid failed to operate (£10 for replacement from breakers).

O/S/R wheel arch rusty (£300 as decided to get 1/2 the car resprayed, otherwise would have been £100).

Rear Brake cylinder bleed nipples seized (£80 for new cylinders and a brake fluid flush and renewal)

FM aerial reception poor due to corroded connector (Yet to fix).

Exhaust Gasket leaks a little bit. Intermittent. (Yet to fix)

Faults developed:
1 x Horn Module failed - Replaced for £10.

Fog Light Housing cracked - Requires replacement fog at around £10 from breakers.

Running Costs:
£80 on full service items purchase from Ford. Includes minor items such as wiper blades and pollen filter.

Tax at £175

Fuel @ £40 a week (~250miles per week)

~£1400, Equates to £50 per week (inc. fuel)
Insurance equates to around £25 per week.
A total of £75 per week.

Worth mentioning: I sold the stock head unit on ebay for around £70. Replaced with the Alpine unit I already had. A few interior trim items were a little worn, brake pedal rubber for instance so I replaced them with items I had left over from my Ghia X which I broke for spares. The car really is immaculate both inside and out. Mechanically it's running superb as well.

I cannot really fault the car at all. It is pretty much perfect for my requirements and does everything I ask of it. The boot is huge and the interior well built and comfortable. It's a near perfect work horse.

Car : Focus St3 (2005)
Time owned : 11 months
Problems : Passenger Seat lether came away, front left jet washer came off, threaded screw on spare tyre (to hold it down)

All warrenty jobbies.

Will only do the cars I've owned this year...

Car: Audi A3 1.8T (1998)
Time owned : 9 months and 13,000 miles (124,000 miles total)
Problems : None at all. Only routine servicing.

Car : Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 (1997)
Time owned : ~20 months and 30,000 miles (88,000 miles total)
Problems : Other than being slow and horrible to drive ;), had a dodgy temperature sensor, or something, in the engine bay which was causing power loss and kangarooing. Rear window washer has stopped working.

Car: Lotus Elise (1999)
Time owned: 9 months and ~9,000 miles (47,000 miles total)
Problems: Head gasket failure after 6,000 miles in my care, put that down to spending many summer's days sat in traffic on our wonderful motorway network. Driver's window fell off runner and in to door, fixed that myself. A couple of scuffs from people who can't park, nothing else mechanical.

Car: Peugeot 306 GTi6 (Registered Aug 2000 with 49000 on the clock).
Time Owned: 2years 3months
Problems: None at all except consumables. Had the exhaust replaced about a year and a hlf ago due to wear. Had the cam belt etc changed at 41000miles due to a design fault and them having a habbit of going. It's never let me down or failed to start and always puts a smile on my face.

So much for dodgy French reliability :)

Car: Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXi
Time owned: 8 months (7,000 miles)
Problems: Failed its MOT with the offside track rod end, sorted that out and it passed the same day, new tyres and exhaust just fitted, the car has just seen over 60,000 miles now. No other problems whatsoever.

Car owned: 1998 Honda Civic 1.8 VTi
Time owned: 3.5 years, approx 50,000 miles in my care, 127k on the clock
problems: Only fault I've had is that the aircon evaporator has failed, and isn't worth fixing. Apart from that, it's just been regular routine maintainance and consumables (brake pads, tyres, cambelt etc)

Car 1: 92 Rover Mini 1.3 Mayfair
Time owned - 17months and 10000 miles
Problems - replaced thermostat. New trackrod ends & balljoints.

Car 2: Toyota Landcruiser 3.0TD LWB
Time owned - 2 months and 12000 miles
Problems - Keeps blowing bulbs, wont stay clean :D

Parents cars: 01 Rover 75 2.0v6 replaced by 05 Jag 3.0V6 SE & Honda Jazz 1.2 - both faultless.

Car : Ford Mondeo 1999
Owned : 1 Year

Problems :

Spare wheel holder bust /needs welding on again
Front heated windscreen bust /think a fuse has gone somewhere
No more electric seat (cogs bust i think) /gave up fixing
Anti roll bar links bust /super easy fix
Rocker cover gasket bust /very easy fix
Power stearing fluid leak /havent a clue
Getting a bit rusty /cant fix that
Leaking rear light cluster /sealent around the cluster fixed it
Rear driver side door central locking bust /aint got round to replacing it
Air con bust /will need a regass, and i guess a new radiator thing
Battery light on /everything is fine says the garage, just put black tape over it!

Apart from those little problems (really dont affect the car, i'm just very fussy), car runs so quiet, and the problems that were fixed were very cheap easy and quick.

Car:99 Volvo S40,
90K miles(20k by me),
owned for 29 months.

The only thing that has broke on it was the climate control flap valve which cost £180 for Volvo to diagnose and replace(the also regassed the system for £70 on top of that too). I have fitted new wheel bearings alround and uprated discs and pads. The bearings were fine though it turned out to be noisy Pirelli P-zeros sounding like knackered wheel bearings(only cost me £150ish to replace all four though).

Car:2006 Audi A3 2.0TFSIQ
6.5k miles
owned 8 months

Nothing has gone wrong with it yet.

Need to edit this now as weve found the leather covering coming away from the leather on the drivers side seat bolster of the Audi. Not bad for a car with 6.5k miles. :(

Not a problem, when you have the ac on before, all the vents etc get cold and there is no humidity in them at all due to the a/c.
When you switch off the car the vents are cold so moisture condenses in your vents, when you switch on the car with a cold, dry screen, the moisture from the vents goes on the screen and mists up, A/C cures this.

Car: 2004 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2TD
Owned: 5 Months

8 Punctures and 1 Blowout
Oh and a wheel nearly fell off (because the tyre place only did one nut up tight and the others were 'finger' tight)
1 Radiator due to radiator fan chewing it up when going through deep water.
Other than that, not a rattle
