OCUK why is it?

In the US, we don't have a nice site like this to order from, we have crappy sites that do not have the resources to inform us about any of the products. In Britian, you have OCUK and the avs forums, two excellent sources of intel on computers and tvs. My computer is second rate because I ordered the bits before I found this site.

In the US postage is a lot more and never next day, and sales tax is normally 7% and added to the price (as already mentioned). The government has been slow to tax sales on the internet, but when they figure out how to do it I am sure the rate will compare to yours.

The original cost of the items is what is skewed, or the exchange rates, or both. According to google, I picked up a 42" plasma tv for 557 pounds, including tax. I have no problem with that.

And as posted, you people make more than us, so we hate you for that. :)

Hi there

You want better prices for products in the UK then complain to the government. Its all taxes.

The government take money out of your wage, your interest at the bank plus then they charge you taxes on everything you buy.

Because we all just sit back in the UK and accept it then they keep on hitting us with more taxes. I am outraged with the amount of money that gets deducted from my wage by the taxman and then to be further taxed on my savings and the items I buy is nothing short of a joke.

The only way to stop it is to make a stand of millions....

because, on average.. we earn a shedload more than people do in the states.

In the freemarket economy goods cost what people are prepared to pay, you could have us prices but be prepared for US wages. Wages are lower, houses are cheaper, goods are cheaper because if they were charged OUR prices on THEIR wages they wouldn't be able to afford anything.

PROOF

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/AWI.html

US average wage 2005 $36000 or roughly £18000

http://www.tuc.org.uk/welfare/tuc-11982-f0.cfm

This may be true however in the US everything is cheaper and I would hazard a guess they are still better off than we are even accounting for the £5k difference

UK overall £23000, 30+ male is more like £26000

This "debate" is tiresome...

Furthermore when people whine about tax, tax and more tax, frankly I'd rather live in a society with a higher tax burdon than live in one with a gaping chasm between the richest and poorest.. I wouldn't trade the safety net we have here in the form of the benefits system for their "tough luck buddy" stance.

Ever see morgan spurlock do 30 days on minimum wage in the US?? No ta, I'll just pay more for stuff if its all the same.

But if we made a stand and got our taxes cut then who would provide relief in countries that don't want it. Where would the money come from to give the thousands of immigrants entering the uk each year (illegally) and support them while we work out fingers to the bone. Bah...don't get me started

Its the British way though, we moan about it but carry on regardless.

I think people are also missing out warranties. IIRC their manufacturer's warranty is a minimum of 9 weeks whereas in the UK it's a year. The amount of things that break in that first year cost the manufacturers a lot extra - so they incorporate it into the price.

the average wage on UK mainland might be 26K, but you'd have to be a manager to get that kind of money over in here in northern ireland. a girl who has been working here for 14 years is gettin paid 15.6K a year, where as her opposite in england is getting paid 21K for doing less. yes taxes are really high, but the problem is the pound really, if we used the euro they'd have to lower prices, because that would mean there would be no point in buying from UK as it would have a huge negative difference in export power than what we do in pounds - dont forget when they outlaw cigarettes, they lose tax, and eventually those health nuts will get rid of spirits, then beers then wines and it'll be civil war i tells ya

Just look at here, we pay about 35% more for car insurance "because it is a state at war", thats like saying america should pay 35% more because they No Swearing off the world, thats hardly fair, sure look at smirnoff and budweiser, they're made in THIS country, thats right, that fresh brewed bud and russian wodka are made in northern ireland, and yet we pay a huge premium on them. I'm want this country to remain part of the UK, yet I can't help but wonder what the place would be like if it was "one ireland". (obviously i would want rid of a certain political party, as their members are murdering, bom'bing batyards)

All you posters who say tuff just live with it I would like to wring your necks !!
It`s people like you with your weak attitudes that keep this country "Rip off Britain".

I have a few comments to make here.

When the gov sit down and work out taxes they start by working out how much money they need to get in to pay for everything we want or need as a country. Yes, we can all argue that spending on this and that is right or wrong, but whatever is decided has to be paid for.

Then that money has to be found through taxes.

Where this all gets complex is that the gov try and get those taxes from loads of different places, many of these are unfair and poorly worked out. Many are seen as stealth taxes, i.e. taxes we dont realise are there until its too late.

The fact remains that if the gov need to generate say £100 Billion in revenue they have to charge taxes to get this.

If we scrapped VAT for example another tax would have to go up to ensure that the great pot still gets the right amount of money.

I for one would love to see all taxes abolished and one simple rate of tax applied to all earnings... yes i know it would rise from say 25% tax to 35% tax, but at least we would all know how it worked and how much we contribute.

Just my thoughts.

It's people like you with your uninformed attitudes that perpetuate that myth! :p

Britain is actually one of the cheapest countries in Europe for electrical goods (second cheapest IIRC).

EDIT: between third and first depending on what products you're talking about. Sweden can be up to 47% more expensive! Link

its just a shame that pc's arent actually electrical goods, they're electronic. *starts picking nits*

I also agree with the single tax point, if i got charged say 50% on my income and there was no tobacco tax, alcohol tax, car tax, water tax, electric tax, insurance tax, national insurance (is this tax or is it a separate), war tax, council tax, fuel tax, psv tax, haulage tax, public transport tax, i would be much happier. Then again, if we didnt have to pay that much tax, would it be fair to say that our wages would drop as well? Perhaps its actually a huge consparicy to keep the masses from actually using their money on luxuries, so that the class/caste system is still there.

Besides, america is 10x the UK's population, so shouldnt they have 10x the exports, 10x the exports, and 10x the market force, so maybe thats why our prices are different.

if you dont like it why dont you get out ?! (of the country)

lol or is that for another thread;)

but yea seriously we do pay extra over the americans. there are additional costs incurred through trading in the UK, including localisation - repackaging where appropriate, manuals, languages, power requirements,

all to serve a smaller number of customers, plus larger entry tax's id presume into the EU... all adds up to costing YOU more. but as stated we do gain additional protection which manufacturers probably wouldnt give otherwise, as mentioned warranties and aftersupport...
