Oculus Go - Oculus unveils $199 stand-alone VR headset "Oculus Go"

I got ALVR steam VR streaming working on the Go over the weekend, but not had particularly good results, which may be due to my rubbish Virgin Media router.

The headset tracking was perfect - absolutely no lag I can see. However the frame-rate was jerky and the picture somewhat soft.
To be honest it's a miracle it's working at all. Also sound isn't supported right now, so you have to wear separate headphones. (I have a wireless headset).

I was thinking of picking a Go up this next week after UK release.

I own an Oculus rift though hardly used in the last couple of months. The cables, sofas well outside my play area, clearing away kids toys from play area and generally bending over the laptop to fire a game put me off it's use.

I got the Galaxy Gear VR afterwards hoping that will at least keep my interest, but Overheating S7 edge mobile and rubbish graphics (or games ) put me off as well.

Anyway hoping maybe the Oculus Go could renew my interest a bit till the next best un-tethered solution arrives.

Will the Oculus Go work with the Gear VR games I have already purchased or I have to buy them again?
Will the Netlix & Plex apps on Oculus Go be better that what there are on the Galaxy Gear

Thanks

Galaxy Gear VR games work fine on the Go, and any you've purchased from the Oculus Store will be there for your Oculus Go too.
The Netflix and Plex apps on the Go are identical to the GearVR.

The graphics will be the same, but the Rift display is very clear with much better lenses and a minimal screen-door effect (though it is not an OLED so doesn't have deep blacks). Future games designed specifically for the Go may have better graphics as they can be fine-tuned for the Go.

The main advantages are:
No Phone Needed - just pull on over your head and you're in VR.
Doesn't overheat
More comfortable.

So if you have a GearVR and a decent phone it's not an enormous step up in visual or interactive quality, but it's a huge step up in terms of convenience and portability.

I had one on order briefly but cancelled it as I decided mobile based VR without 6 degrees of freedom/tracking and multiple hand controller support wouldn't be worth it. Especially as I've noticed you can buy the Acer Windows mixed reality headset for £280. Seems like a much better deal given it's only £80 more than the Oculus. Less if you go for the 64gb one.

I'm just not sure if it's worth getting as I already have a Playstation VR headset?

For media consumption and casual gaming it's worth it - I have an Oculus Rift and the Go is way more convenient and much better quality for watching movies. 3DOF works well enough with a lot of games, even flight sims like Ultrawings, the biggest handicap is the 3DOF controller, though it's perfectly usable. Paired with an XboxOne S gamepad it's a nifty portable VR gaming system.

As a replacement for a PSVR or PC based 6DOF system with tracked controllers - no. As a complement to have wireless portable VR for media consumption and casual gaming, definitely.

Yeah, in some ways it's unfair to compare Oculus go and WMR but it just struck me that, as I already have a reasonably spec'd PC, for what I was going to spend on an Oculus I could have a WMR headset.

For folk who have the headset and wear glasses how do you find it for comfort?

I tried and Oculus rift at the weekend and had serious issues trying to get it on with my glasses. The Vive and PSVR headsets are ok for me though so I'm hoping oculus have improved the design.

What's the deal with returning online orders these days? If I bought the headset and it didn't fit would I have the right to return it?

Hopefully we'll start seeing these appearing in stores as you really need to try headsets for comfort before buying them.

I had to buy prescription lenses for my Rift, as it wasn't comfortable with Glasses, but I have absolutely no problem with glasses in the Go. It ships with a face plate spacer to add a bit more room for glasses too.

Thanks, that's useful to know. Decided to order one from the rainforest as it makes returns easy in the event of any issues with fit though it sounds like I'll be fine. Should arrive on Wednesday so I'll post up my thoughts then.

My Go has been returned back to Oculus for replacement as it has a dead pixel at the centre of the right lens. Not noticeable all the time, but distracting as it pops into and out of view depending on the brightness of the background and where you are looking.

However Oculus don't do cross-shipping replacements unlike other major retailers, so I'm without my Go while waiting for them to replace it. :(

So I agree, probably best to order from retailers with quick and easy returns, just in case there's an issue, even a minor one.

UK release tomorrow!

Trying to order online from argos (since I have vouchers) but system not allowing me to continue unless i add something else to the order ...

Got my headset a couple of days ago and been watching a few 3D movies on it which work really well. If anyone is considering it definitely get the 64gb version as I filled even that up pretty much straight away.

Amy game recommendations? I like the look of some of the 3d space shooters like end space and anshar wars. Republique and rush also look good. I haven't bought anything yet so any tips would be appreciated!

I've bought a load of Go games in the Oculus sale, not had time to play many properly but here's what I liked:
Ultrawings - Impressive Pilot Wings style flight sim.
End Space - Amazing looking space sim. Apparently a bit short.
Coaster Combat - Fun arcade roller coaster shooter.
Virtual Virtual Reality - Off the wall adventure game that makes excellent use of the Go remote. Doesn't feel like a 'mobile' game.
Drop Dead - Fun on-rails zombie shooter.
Pinball FX 2 - Excellent pinball simulations. Visually very impressive. Does not feature the tables shown in the artwork though, they're extra DLC! (Gamepad required)
Overflight - visually impressive WWII style flight combat game
Dread Secret and Dread Secret circle - Horror adventure games. Not had much time to play them but they seem pretty good.
Dreadhalls - Very scary horror exploration game.
Republique VR - excellent adventure game. Only played a little bit but it's great.

I would say that a bluetooth gamepad is essential to get the most out of the flying and space sim games, and some other games. I bought a grey Xbox One S controller which matches the Go's colour perfectly, and works very well.

Got mine today - pretty impressed with it compared to the other things ive previously bought (HTC Vive and Gear VR).

My own impression has been i preferred the Gear over the HTC because its untethered and the visual quality was similar - the Go seems slightly better than the HTC was and without the tethering it feels great to just chuck on and it works without having to mess around with headphones. Will give it a proper workout over the weekend.

What I really don't get is how Gear VR has an IPD adjustment wheel and Oculus could not manage to put one on the Go?

Yeah, IPD adjustment would make it more comfortable, but I imagine they were building to a budget, plus the lens sweet spot is large enough that it's not an issue for the majority people. Of course if your own IPD is outside the Go's range then it is a big issue. Would have been good to have a software adjustment though, like the WMR headsets.

Like Ravenger said, price, partly brought about by a simplified design (one of things about the Go is that it only uses a single screen rather than two independent ones).
