OCZ Vertex 2 SSD failed

I bought an OCZ vertex 2 in December, but it's developed a really annoying problem where it stops responding about 3-5 mins after booting (it seems to just disconnect). It then won't be found by the BIOS for a few attempts.

I'm guessing the SSD is dying, but is it still covered by overclocker's warrenty? Or will it have to go to OCZ?

Overclockers for the first year, then it’s off to the Netherlands for the remaing 2 years ( at your expense)

Luckily it's still within a year then :)

Out of interest I plugged it in to an external USB caddy. The drive seems to disconnect and reconnect every few minutes. Obviously this makes it useless as a boot drive :/

Wonder if this is same thing thats happening to my ocz v2, yesterday started getting bsod after about 5 mins of starting windows, tried reinstalling windows from scratch but installation fails after 5 mins cannot locate files etc.
then upon restart bios doesn't detect ssd.
rma time? or could it be something else?

*update*
well wont detect it at all now also the green light on drive is now red is it dead anyone know??

Might be worthwhile looking at the relevant OCZ forum. Loads of threads about this sort of thing.

Good luck.

PS. red light "usually" indicates a fault. One simple thing worth trying is leaving the SSD disconnected from the PC (IE. shut PC down and remove power lead) and leave overnight. Then re-connect and see what state it is in.
Unluckily the latest firmware does not appear to have sorted all the issues! A number of folks are still complaining for instance, that they have issues with the dirve coming out of sleep mode (hence why I've had this set off from day one).

maddog. I'm assuming you did a "secure erase" of your drive before re-installing Windows!? I'm also assuming it's on the latest firmware!?

It did actually happen a couple of months ago, it blue screened and the drive couldnt be seen by the BIOS (lost some data that time as well). After leaving it off for about 10 mins it worked fine and has done since. But now it just does it no matter what I try :/

Updating the firmware has made no difference.

Mine is displaying a solid green and red light on the drive btw.

Yep ... RMA time me thinks.

PS. You could try an RMA direct to OCZ. Might be quicker. If it was me, I would put up a post on the relevant OCZ forum. They are very helpful and have also assisted people with direct RMA's. Or just speak to who ever supplied it to you and RMA through them.

Well, OC said they only cover them for 28 days so it has to go back to OCZ :(
That's what OC say but you still have your statutory rights and if the item is less than 12 months old you can insist that they deal with the RMA. Unfortunately they are just trying to pass the hassle of sending the faulty item back to OCZ onto you.

http://whatconsumer.co.uk/shops-responsibility/

The Sale of Goods Act makes reference to ‘the seller’, this is the shop, the retailer, or the individual you bought it from, and is who you made the contract with. It is not the manufacturer, and don’t let the shop tell you otherwise! If there is an obvious fault with the item at any time within the first 6 months and it has not been caused by wear and tear or misuse, your first port of call must be the shop you bought it from. They have the responsibility to put the matter right, and should not evade this responsibility by referring you to the manufacturer in the context of a guarantee or warranty. Even after this 6 month period, if the item breaks down prematurely , you should always go back to the shop or retailer in the first instance.

Ive just had the red and green led issue on the vertex 2 60gb drive as well. Attempting to rma it now with ocuk as its only been about 6-7 months since i bought it so its still ocuks responsibility afaik with regards to rma procedures.

Hoping for a swift rma with little fuss.
