odd connection problem on sky router

hi there

I have just set up sky broad band for a friend

it is working fine using the netgear router it comes with if it is wired,

I have tried to setup a laptop which works fine when wired

when it works wireless it wont work as in sends more than it receives,

I thought fine disable that and try an external wirelss card, to work out if it was the cheap internal one.

However this is having problems as well, detects the wireless network connects fine the drops the connection the connects fine and drops again.

any ideas must be the router

I suggest you disable any other network componant on the laptop first, and make sure all the drivers are up to date.

Then to me your not acctually connected to the router (the laptop is not gettin an ip address).

Try going closer to the router and trying this

Start > run > type cmd > Press Enter > Type ipconfig /all > press enter

See if your acctually gettin an IP address from the router. 192.XXX.XXX.XXX.

If you are then you could acctually ping the router.

Ping <gateway address> > wait for reply or no reply.

Also turn off internal firewalls because your router is a hardware firewall.

NICE ONE, the steps above still is good practice. glad you sorted it, alough you do no wep is not as stronger encryption as wpa/wpa2?
 
yeah dude, will follow the steps you posted above and take them on board

they dont do any internet banking or anything of a sensitive nature, so will prob just leave on wep ? what do you reckon

personally I know wep can be cracked, to be honest you should be alright. But its a personal choice.

The security is contained inside the device itself. If it is Windows XP with SP2 and the device supports wpa/wpa2 then its fine. No matter how old the PC is it still will support all security hash protocols.

Whoever told you this then its wrong.

EDIT. Does your external device support WPA?...... Has the router been setup g and b ?.... and are you on a channel that nobody else is on? ..
