Odd HD Tach for SSD?

Hi Guys,

I installed a Kingston 80GB SSD drive today and ran HD Tach. Having looked at reviews the data rate always seems to remain constant at around 220MB/s. But my graph shows a dip at around 5GB, seems a bit strange and it always appears when I run the benchmark.

See reviews at http://hothardware.com/Articles/Intel-X25M-80GB-SATA-Solid-State-Drive-Intel-Ups-The-Ante/?page=6 to compare against below graph.

I'm wondering if its my PC or the SSD??

Any thoughts would be welcome! TIA

PC Specs: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Q6600 @ 3.0GHz, 4GB Crucial Ballistix, Asus P5K Premium.

If the SSD has your OS on it, then that might be the cause. The guys in the review you referred to tested the SSD's as secondary disks without the OS on them. You also might want to try other benchmarks such as CrystalMark.

Maybe you could replicate the conditions exactly like the guys that tested it in the review. They said,
"Under each test condition, the Solid State Drives were installed as secondary volumes in our testbeds, with a standard spinning hard disk for the OS and benchmark installations. The SSDs were left blank without partitions wherever possible, unless a test required them to be partitioned and formatted, as was the case with our ATTO benchmark tests. Windows firewall, automatic updates and screen savers were all disabled before testing. In all test runs, we rebooted the system and waited several minutes for drive activity to settle before invoking a test."

Best,
David
