Broadband users are not getting the speeds they are paying for, according to the largest survey of its kind ever undertaken by telecoms regulator Ofcom.

I'm on ADSL2 and typically get a download speed of < 10Mb/s, despite having been advised that I could expect > 20Mb/s - I have asked for but been refused a 50% discount ;)

Anyone out there on Virgin?
I hear that they are faster than anyone else tested :p

With Virgin you get your advertised speeds...from 11pm to 8am. :( currently from about 4:30pm to 8pm the connection becomes SO slow and your ping goes through the roof.

Virgin here, no idea what speeds I actualy get but it always seems pretty decent.

Going to be upgrading to fibre optic end of this year.

I was with o2 for a year or so in my flat, I paid for 8mb and I had full 24mb for a week or so while they did tests on my line!

The customer service people said that my line was good for up to 26mb.

Granted I could see the exchange outside my window but it was good speed!

Now I'm with Virgin on 20mb as I have moved to a house which is far from the exchange, I get 20mb all the time (as long as I don't hit download limits in the day and get capped).

I'm very happy with them, just wish I wasn't paying £30 a month for it!

Im on VirginNet 20mb package. Last night I downloaded Trackmania United Forever off their website. The file weighed in at 1126mb and I got that in about 9 mins. Quick bit of napkin math says that came down at about 2Mb/s or (roughly) 16mbit/s. Not too bad I thought.

The general populous needs 30 seconds eduction on ADSL technology so they fully understand WHY they won't get their up to speeds.

No, what we need is for a more accurate estimation of the speed before you sign up (BT were happy to tell me that I would get 5mbit from their ADSL when I could only manage 3) - while O2 were mostly spot on with the 5.5-6mbit estimate.

But what we REALLY need is FTC/FTH from someone other than VM

cable gets a lot of stick, a lot of undeserved stick at that..

once in 5 years I've had speed problems, they were sorted after under 10 mins on the phone

can't fault ntl/virgin

I can't recall how long I have been with ntl/virgin 10 years maybe. In that time I have only once had problems which lasted a week, not bad in anyones books.

Indeed. People also often get confused between Kb/KB Mb/MB and so on. I've heard of people complaining about their speeds on a 8Mb service, moaning that they can only download at 900Kb when in fact their browser is measuring at KB not Kb so 900KB = 7.2Mb. It's not that hard to understand.

I agree our NTL line at home is only on the cheapest package, but we generally always get what we pay for.

At uni last year we were on 10m between 3 of us, there were a few times when it would just slow to a halt, due to a housemate streaming all day, he carried on, despite the fat that they capped us for the afternoon and me and the other housemate got really cheesed off.

If it wasnt for their stupid limiting policys they would be perfect.
