-- Off-roading Weekend out -- (pics)

Looks like great fun! :D I've done it a couple of times as a passenger and it's a somewhat strange feeling. A couple of times I was *certain* we were going to roll over - we never did. Getting stuck is part of the fun too :D

BTW - pics are too big ;) Should be 800x600 really :)

Nothing like wrecking the country side for ramblers and horse riders :D

I'd rather let the ramblers and horseriders have free reign over the muddy bits in exchange for them keeping off the tarmaced bits ;)

The bill thats gone through clsing lanes is called NERC, it basicaly made any lane that wasn't classed as a byway undrivable.

Was that a pay and play site or byways?? if it's a byway you may want to take down the ones where people have driven all over the place as thats illegal.

You know Rikk, i was thinking the same thing. Here we are trying not to get shafted by NERC or the bobble hat wearers anymore and you get pics of stuff like that posted up. Its almost certainly a byway - possibly not even one whihc is open to 4x4's any more as the OP doesnt seem to know a great deal about it.

Alson in one of those pics the rope being passed out looks very much like a KERR, which is later seen used with a strop and a shackle...not a good idea if it was, when that shackle breaks itll make a big mess of whoever/whatever is in the way. If its not a KERR then its fine.

Is it me, or is charging through the open countryside in a 4x4 quite properly got nothing to do with safety? Looks like great adrenalin-pumping fun.

Its all at low speeds in a convoy. Most dangerous part of green laning is probaly getting in and out of your car :p Serious off roading however is a different story. Also charging over the mountain at 40mph is dangerous, but i never rolled over :p Although i did have some mega big slides on and crapped myself a few times

A friend of mine has an old Shogun that he basically uses as a battering ram. It's not really "nice", but it sure is fun just driving along foot to floor avoiding the big trees :p

Looks like a typical LandRover meet to me, getting stuck in the puddles and needing to be dragged out ;) :p

Green laning as seen in those somewhat questionable pictures above is at a speed of no more than 15mph on public byways where vehicles are permitted (even less post NERC).

Proper off road competing is usually at even lower speeds, its all about control however the adrenaline is much the same as doing 100mph+ in a race, just achieved in a different way. Its a very technical sport requiring proper driving skills.

My brother is looking to get a Lanny, where should he start? Where's a good source of information? He knows very little at the moment except he's been taken green-laning a few times (mostly with him in a Samurai, trying the same stuff as the Defenders) and he loves it.

Internet forums are the best place:

www.mud-club.com
www.lr4x4.com

are both excellent places, MC is for all 4x4's with majority being LR's and LR4x4 is for LR's but also has some others and some really funky stuff too!!

I'd love to have a go at that but alas with the powers that be trying to phase it out I doubt that I'll get the chance :(

Take a peek on mud-club, there' a very active group around Thetford that go out pretty frequently, if you make your way to them I'm sure they'd be more than happy to take you and show you around.

I'd be happy to take you out but I'm in Essex so would be a lot longer drive, but anyway yell if you fancy :)

Cheers, I'll give that a look. I really need to start getting down to Thetford forrest to put in some miles on my bike, I'll have to take a look at their regular spots assuming they are in / around the forrest :)

So let me ask, why are people with Range Rovers and Discos in your eyes "noobs"?...

Is this some sort of 4x4 snobbery? If so, no wonder the lanes are getting closed! Im sorry mate, but if you treat people with that sort of contempt less people will take it up and less roads will be accessable.

Least the owners of these Range Rovers and Disco's were actually taking them "off road" and not just using them as Chelsea taxis on the school run.

All the rrs' and freelanders got stuck, it was defenders that were pulling them out.
I don't understand the motive for taking a £50k road car offroad when they are too scared to get it dirty or just get stuck the second they hit some challenging turf.
It isn't snobbery at all, you buy a defender to pelt it though fields and bogs without a care in the world you buy a disco 3 or rrs to pose.
My dad got stuck in a 6 foot deep mud hole, we weren't bothered about the condition of the car and we had loads of fun getting it out, the onlooking owner of a black rrs decided to try to to turn around (which was impossible) when all you needed to get up was decent amount of momentum.

We took down the registration of the team of people who were driving all over the place getting suck and telling the n00bs to follow and reported them, we are sick of people doing whatever they like and wrecking havoc, there are pathways for a reason.

It is a shame as 'we' offroaders have got a bad name for destroying countryside when that is our last intention, it is the showoffs that are causing all the problems :(

mudclub is a great place to start to learn, we learned at the merc offroading day.
Just make sure you offroad in a car your life doesn't depend upon as it can in some bad cases get damaged (our cb radio got damaged by a very low tree)
