Off to Krakow, Poland in January for my birthday with 4 chums, I hear it’s dam cheap and they call it the new ‘Prague’ with a lively student population and lots of music,

Anyone been got any recommendations for cheap accommodation or places to go /avoid

I reckon it will be cold in Jan :D

Yeah i've been, gonna be cooooold.

It's quite lively, I wouldn't call it the new Prague though, it's not that kind of lively really, especially as it is out of the tourist season.

Make sure you go see the underground salt mine and the camps if you have time.

I went there 11th novemeber. Stayed at the 4 star novotel for the whopping price of 30 quid per night (60 quid a room, 2 sharing with two double beds)

Its about a ten minute walk from the main square and was a great hotel. Or hop on a tram and youre there in seconds.

Found an ace club called Prozac which was one of the main clubs over there, well worh a look. There are just loads and loads of bars to choose from and at about a quid a pint its no problem leaving your beer if you dont like a place and moving on.

Keep in mind that most of the bars are under street level and polish lager is strong. Those stairs you skipped down on the way in may prove more challenging on the way out! The bars are also VERY smokey so if anyone in your party is asthmatic, tell em to pack their inhaler!

Basicly just head to the main square and all the streets off it are rammed with bars. And polish students :)

For the more cultural, Auschwitz is very close and you can take tours there in half a day.

Prozak is an excellent place though time I was there I had to leave early as I still had alcohol poisoning after accidentally drinking a litre of Sabrovka (Polish vodka, excellent, drink it with apple juice) when the previous night I forgot that each glass contains a Polish double (70ml). Also definitely worth going to Cien (prenounced chen) though expect to queue and they don't let groups of drunk Brits in so arrive reasonably sober.

I was in Warsaw a couple of months ago - didn't go clubbing just a few restaurants and pubs. Poland is a fantastic place though, the people are so friendly, open and honest. I was on my own but was never on my own if you know what I mean!

Nah, you're right it is Tallin. Dam was the centre of the world, then Prague, then Tallin, Riga might be next.

Why do you say that man? :p

Been there.

Clubs and pubs arn't that good. People are very unfriendly, customer service is unheard of and there's very few sights to do during the day.

It tries to do Prague and even charges the same (if not more!) but fails badly.

I really enjoyed it when I went there a few years ago. I was with great company so perhaps that made up for anything Riga missed (not that I noticed anything).

Customer service was fine but people wore dead pan expressions like in most other Eastern European countries I've visted :p
