Off work ill

Never get sick, so doubt I've ever had a sick day at work. Or if I did, I can't remember the last time.

Most people generally are hypochondriacs so I really don't pay them much mind when they whine like little girls about feeling 'rough' or whatever.

Reading this thread I'm just amazed.

How can people be bad at taking holiday? Have you not lives?

I get 30 days + privilege leave + flexi leave + bank holidays

Which all told adds up to about 2 months, and at that I struggle to keep within the limits.

Public Sector by any chance?

"Lives" are what happen on a day to day basis, not a week holiday in Greece here and there...

I'm bad at taking holiday....

Usually because I've booked too many days compared to what I'm allowed. :D
Oh well, I just take it un paid.

Don't take on the "sick" people's work then.

No one forces you to do so.

Minimum work for maximum pay - follow the examples set at the "top" of our society.

There are a number of people where I currently work and previous work places that seem to be constantly off work sick.

In the past 6 of years I think I have had 1 day off and this was a 'sickie' for Summer olympics when I went to London.

Do you think this is down to poor immune systems, because people are more prone to illness or just pulling sickies?

There's a guy off at the moment due a serious problem (understandable he's off) but some just have the odd day every couple of weeks and are then usually in and fine the rest of the week.

It really grinds my gears, especially when other people have to take on their workload

Thought i'd post in here today.

I was fine yesterday. Woke up today with the stinking man flu. I got my stuff together and came to work anyway because I hate people thinking I'm skiving off. I feel the need to come into work to show I'm struggling with Man Flu before taking the next day off (If i'm still feeling ill).

The problem with that is that you are relying on others to notice you being unwell, and you may 'try too hard' and appear false. Plus, you cannot control what others do or think (as this thread shows), so if you're unwell just don't come in at all. They'll resent you even if you had all limbs amputated!

Too many people in crappy jobs use the sick allowance as extra holiday and ensure they take thier quota. Happens all of the time.

Currently contracting at a gov site and see it all of the time.

Me, if I am sick, I don't get paid. Simples.

Pretty much this, the paid sick lot will bang on about not infecting colleagues (like they honnesly give a **** if they are not the boss) or getting infected by colleagues but the fact is most common colds and flu are infectious before symptoms show.

i've had 3 days sick (all in one go) in just over 2 years and I was sick as a dog. Before that, i've not been off sick since started working which was just over 4 years ago

You do get loads of people doing that. Unfortunately people abuse it. And will continue to abuse it.

I'd say I average about two instances of sickness a year. I am pretty confident I could get that down to zero if I didn't work in such a terrible environment. There is no air con, no fresh air and the temperature sits at around 26 degrees all year round.

Lucky for you. I get 5 weeks and 2 day of holiday entitlement this tax year and that includes bank holidays (but I can work them and use the entitlement when I want). I also have to give 6 weeks notice of booking time off and thats not guaranteed if too many people are off on holiday at same time. Sometimes a sicky is the only way if I need an odd day off at short notice if I can't shift swap.

Yeah, but you're contracting and presumably earning a lot more than someone in a menial office job, so not getting paid if you're sick is more than balanced out. I can't blame people for pulling sick days when their work is boring and low paid.

A lot of it is the eye of the beholder though. Me and colleagues are the lowest paid (in the UK) in our specific specialism, yet our salaries are far from poor. Yes, we feel undervalued, overworked and expendable, but who doesn't these days?
