It works, offline only though.
what does your steam icon in the games list say? Preload complete? Or?
There's two, ones the preload one (left 4 dead demo (preloaded)), the other's just left 4 dead listed with all my non steam games. It's the second one I'm using.

Weird, I've only got the one
You need to add the left4dead.exe to steam manually. Go to game>add a non steam game to my gameslist. Then navigate to Steam>Steamapps>Commom>Left 4 Dead Demo>Left4dead.exe. A second icon should show up in Steam, double click that and you'll be able to play the demo again

Advanced gives the good balance between fun and difficulty.
It is a lot harder than the demo was, with some clan mates, just spend about 2 hours doing No Mercy, have up after dying for the 3rd time on the hospital roof
