I went to Reds in Manchester tonight for a friend's birthday. Kind of disappointing really. Their brisket was great (keeping in mind that I like the point cut most of all) though the sauce it was slathered in was a little overpowering. The beef ribs were quite good for the most part but mine was under done. It wasn't far off but it felt like when I first tried to cook BBQ food and would badly plan the timing. All the sides were crap too.

The service was also pretty poor so....unimpressed.

Despite the above they mostly delivered on decent BBQ meat so I'm not going to completely write them off. I still want to try their burgers too.

Been there a few times, usually after visiting The Alchemist... Generally good food, burgers are good. Had the beef ribs as well, quite liked them. I found it all to be quite salty though.

E.D.I.T.: Just noticed we have a Schnipps and a Schnippzle posting in this thread...

FT we were in Didsbury a few weeks ago, have you tried http://www.solita.co.uk/ great soft shell crab burger, was only a quick bite.

I live about two miles away from East Didsbury so that Solita is one I've been to a few times :) They're pretty good though if you end up in Manchester again you should definitely try Almost Famous. Solita is good but AF blow them away (ignore how hipster it is).

Yeah, I've been meaning to try it for ages but as I say I wasn't super impressed. It's not terrible by any means but so perhaps if I'd not made better BBQ at home I'd have been happier. I definitely agree on the salt levels.

That's the thing though: As people who cook food at home, we're still expecting to be "wow'd" by culinary perfection when we go out to eat. Sometimes that isn't the case. Is then the question whether or not our expectations have surpassed the quality of the delivered goods and why the goods may not measure up? Alternatively we could just realise that food was our lot in life and it should be us running the restaurants :p

Yeah, a few of my friends and I have discussed this exact issue before. Getting half-decent at cooking has ruined several dining experiences for us :p That said, when we go somewhere that is genuinely good it really blows us away and we spend half the night trying to work out how they did it.

Yea, we talk about this out here, as the quality of cuisine is... not so much, unless it's local. As such, my group of friends now can smash out so much better food than you can get out anywhere. It's just how you position the night I suppose. You know what you're getting and don't mind that etc.

I liked the fact that the block acts as a wifi router. I wanted to get a wirless probe that would connect to my smart phone but they al use bluetooth and the range is just pointless 9I want to have my smoker going in the back yard while I am on the 2nd floor office/guestroom working).

Also like how each probe monitors ambient AND meat temperature together rather than needing 2 probes.

However, $170 by then while some good old fashioned radio probes are like $50.

I was looking at this earlier today. Not sure if I'm just going to wait until they're released. I want to get the block with 4 probes and range extender but I already have a good enough monitor and don't want to be forking out $170 for something that could be useless.

Yeah. I really liked the idea of the block and the wifi/range extension that it offered but I had similar misgivings about the price. I've gone for the single probe option instead as it is cheap enough to have a play with. To be honest I don't really need to monitor things from a million miles away - just being able to pop into a nearby room and check on it now and again would be enough. If it turns out to be more useful than I'm expecting I may upgrade further down the line.

The idea of using it inside a bag for sous vide is the thing that I really like, in addition to the obvious interior/ambient temperature with one probe thing.
