***** Official 2016 BBQ Thread - Chucking it Down: Proper British BBQ Weather *****

Cheers :) It was good. The Homebase Bar Be Quick briquettes turned out to work ok - they took a while to go and seemed to want to burn at 270f with the vents basically closed. But they lasted all night too. I thought I preferred Big K lumpwood but that seems to run colder and for less time? My bacon weave was a bit naff, won't bother with that again. Just placed another T&G order for 3 weeks time when we've got 14 adults and 15 kids coming round. Whole brisket and 4kg pork butt to start with but will need to add more! :)

Sounds good /re the next BBQ :)

Briquettes vs lump wood I'd generally always expect to last longer but I'm surprised that you had lower temps with the lumpwood (normally the opposite is true). That said, I've heard really mixed things about Big K - some people swear by them and others say they're awful.

I used big K lumpwood today. Kept a high heat for about 45 minutes.

Took a look at my old regular BBQ today and the outer is so rusted none of the vents move without the application of a hammer! Inside was something of a horror show as well so I've bitten the bullet and got a Weber Kettle on the way now too :D

Weber 57cm Kettle, Pro Q Frontier + lots of charcoal = fun times :D

I think I'll get some more of the homebase briquettes - they worked just fine once I understood them and a decent price (£10 for 10kg IIRC).

I used some B&Q Diall briquettes yesterday at my mums on her open grill, self-build brick BBQ she has in her garden (so not like one where you can close the lid etc). Lit it at 2:00PM and didn't think they'd last long but they were still searing hot gone 6PM. Was pretty impressed as usually any cheap stuff we've bought in the past has burnt out in an hour or so!

Spatchcock chicken with a citrus and thyme marinade. Blowtorched some lemon halves to drizzle over it and served it with a salad of feta, tomatoes, cucumber and onion (and tons of black pepper + olive oil). Pretty damn tasty.

To make it more BBQ I smoked it over a big ol' chunk of oak :)

How much does rain affect bbq temp, I'm guessing drizle ok but heavy rain bad? I've got 5 days off work as of Thursday but housebound to a degree as studying for an exam. Thought what better way to spend the days than bbqing while i study but it's forecast for rain if not storms pretty much the entire time  Might have to find a tarp..

Hardly at all, wind has far more effect in my experience - I did a 6 hour cook in the rain last week and just stuck a parasol over the bbq but of course the rain was sideways but no issues at all!

Had a touch yesterday. Went out to get some more coal. Found a petrol station that had 10kg bags of Pagan restaurant charcoal. It didn't have a price and the girl said she wasn't sure what the price was, so she just charged me a fiver. I'm sure that stuffs about £15 a bag.

It burnt for ages. It was cookable for at least an hour. Big molten rocks like lava.

Right I know I am probably doing people's heads in asking about different BBQ's and smokers but would something like this be a good compromise to a Weber?

Mrs is putting her foot firmly down on BBQ expenditure as we've got some big ticket things to spend on soon so need to find something in this price range ideally! Dreams of a Weber are well and truly gone.

Looks OK to me but my only concern is that it doesn't mention a lower air vent which I believe you ideally want if you want to do some smoking? Everything else looks good enough and reviews are positive. Think the brand name is Grill King which are sold on Ebay, Argos and a few other places!

Ended up with just shy of 4kg of Pork Shoulder from work (Morrisons - the pork actually seems quite good locally! :)) with intentions of smoking and shredding it this weekend.

Would it be a better idea to leave it as one piece or am I better cutting it 2? :)

1 piece is generally best as timmeh says. Obviously it'll take longer that way of course. If you do want to split it into two try and make sure that they are the same size and shape (this matters more than them being exactly the same weight).

1 piece it is! (assuming it fits! :D)

Oh and a little googling (is that a thing now?!) suggests the reason my snakes may not be giving off good heat is I'm putting the lid back on too quickly! :)
