Budapest

When was the track built?

Work began on the Hungaroring in 1985, and the track was race-ready just nine months later. The Hungarian government had originally considered reviving the old Nepliget park circuit in Budapest in a bid to host Formula 1 in the country, but in the end decided to create a purpose-built facility instead.

When was its first Grand Prix?

The year was 1986. Nelson Piquet won the first F1 race around the Hungaroring, famously slithering his Williams around the outside of Ayrton Senna’s Lotus to take the lead.

What’s the circuit like?

The lack of straights at the Hungaroring often sees it compared to a karting circuit – and it’s true, the resemblance is uncanny. With several series of corners to string together, teams opt for Monaco levels of downforce, with a well-sorted chassis tending to be rewarded over horsepower given the short straights on offer. It’s a challenge many of the drivers relish, however, with finding a good rhythm key to setting fast lap times.

Why go?

Hungary in July is usually hot hot hot. The good news if you’re at the track, though, is that there’s a water park close by – the Mogyorodi Aquarena vizi szorakoztatopark – which should be a good place to cool off. Away from aqueous activities, the circuit is only 20km from Budapest, putting you close to one of Europe’s most fascinating, storied and lively city centres.

Where is the best place to watch?

The track is built in a natural bowl, a bit like the UK's Brands Hatch. That means that any of the grandstands located on or around the main straight should provide a view of other parts of the track too, giving you more F1 bang for your, er, forint.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Will be an interesting race to see if McLaren continue their form and if Danny Ric is ahead of Tsunoda at all.

Bit of a gulf in points between Alpine and the bottom 4 teams at the moment, McLaren and Alpine in no-mans-land then Red Bull storming ahead of the other two. They aren't the numbers of a close racing formula yet. McLaren need to keep their socks up and keep moving forward. Albon carrying Williams in the points department too, hope they can find some race pace to be more consistent.

Based on Lando's comments I'm not expecting a McLaren repeat, he seemed to think they would still be poor in slow speed corners

I’m expecting a good result from McLaren Mercedes will be worse, Ferrari behind and Alonso,
But will Perez make it into q3, do we care? Will Riciardo beat Tsunoda do we care?
I think Riciardo is going to be disappointing.

Lots of interesting questions this race: Was McLaren's pace from the last race a real step change or just their car suited to the track? Can Aston recover their position as best of the rest or have they been passed by other cars in the development race? Will we get the old Dani Ric back? Can Pérez turn round his abysmal run of form?

Oh the unknown, fascinating, if it is as hot as the forecasts suggests then I would expect very different performances from Silverstone which was very cool. Thus it will be hard to gauge any steps forward..

I read that in Alex Jacques voice...

"All these and more questions will be answered..... After the break" :D

You do wonder what will happen with the tyres and the heat
Won’t have scenes like ‘97 where Schumachers tyres wilted in the heat so Damon nearly won as his tyres coped better (God bless tyre wars)
Its not beyond realms of a Hamilton win
Ricciardo has also won here - if he can get up to speed (hur hur) in the AT he’ll be up there

Very hard to make any sort of prediction for this weekend. I think quali could be really good again as the times tend to be so much closer round this tighter/shorter track. There will be less of a lottery element though if the weather remains super hot and dry, so perhaps it will show performance spread quite well. I think it's about time reality kicked in and Redbull take a one, two. 3rd place seems very open to Mclaren, Merc, Ferrari or Aston!

I expect it’s just me being optimistic but I do feel Max is due some bad luck soon.

I mean it'd be great to see :p but realistically 'bad luck' in F1 at least has some correlation to competition, when you're cruising around at the front you're putting less wear on the car, less racing so less risk of contact and not driving to the limit constantly so less likely to make a mistake.

Surely has to be

No team has ever gone unbeaten, even during Ferrari’s or Merc’s dominance (I stand correct if I am wrong)
Just get the feeling it will be here that it’s broken, given it seems the circuit doesn’t play as much to strength of the RB

Interesting..

The stipulations will see drivers attack Q1 on a set of Hard tyres, switching to the Mediums in the second session before the top 10 battle it out for pole on the softest compound.

It is part of a trial of the ATA system that, if successful, could be voted to be used across next season and beyond.
