Yes I would prefer this. I also preferred the sport before the cost cap. I think in the pursuit of ultimate speed and performance (which is what F1 was and what a single qualifying lap is) that there shouldn't be so many restrictions. Obviously there need to be rules, just not as strict in all areas.

The cost cap has always frustrated me. On one hand I understand why they did it but the reality is the "little teams" still don't spend all their budget and it's just stopped the exponential rate of upgrades from the larger teams. I enjoyed the constant aggressive evolutions of the cars, I like the engineering behind F1.
Yeah, I was chatting about the exact same thing with my Dad at the weekend.

I get the reason why they've done it but bigger teams will always find a way to be creative with their budgeting (i.e. Mercedes & INEOS new yacht / boating focus) and F1 has always been exciting because of the aggressive evolutions, like you say. The double diffuser from Brawn in 2009 was a complete left-field but legal reading of the regulations and it took other teams almost half a season even without a budget cap to find a way to incorporate it into their cars.

Introduce a budget cap into that 2009 season and it doesn't have the exciting last 9 races that it did have as the teams take longer to catch up. Brawn/Jenson won 6 out of the first 7 races before we had 6 different winners from the last 10 races.

I wish that now there is a cost cap, they'd drop some of the stuff that was supposed to reduced costs. Like, why not let teams decide whether in-season testing is worth the cost? Probably with something to ensure that smaller teams can get fair access to test tracks to prevent RB or Ferrari milking an advantage from their owned tracks.

I've never been the biggest fan of the current knockout format, too often Q1 and Q2 feel pointless for the faster cars (except for Pérez :p )

:D

I'd also like any grid penalties drivers are going into the qualy with to be applied from Q1. So if a driver finishes 14th in Q1 and has a 5 places grid penalty then he's out in Q1.

I always thought one argument for the cost cap (and aero testing limits) was to close the gap between teams, e.g. stop one team with deep pockets dominating, and here we are with RB a country mile ahead of the rest and will be for the foreseeable future...

I had a thought a bit ago that, especially with the reduction to 1 pre-season test, they could easily have 3 test days on the Monday after a race during the year, open to all teams should they choose to do it, kinda like the tyre tests that they do but more open.

Doesn't look like rain for this one, but Budapest is partial to the odd thunderstorm as I've experienced on multiple summers.

Shame it's not a little hotter, would be a fun race if the if the tyres only latest 10 laps or so. It's looking like 30c for Sunday.

As for Ricciardo, he will need to get off to strong start but I can see him getting involved in an incident on the first lap for some reason. His times in the RB in Silverstone testing were supposed to have been very impressive, but then given how good that car is, that's probably not indicative of anything. Hulk was impressive during the race he stood in for Perez and Vettel in the past. Let's see what Danni Ric has got after less time away.

Well they all work in conjunction with each other anyway. I do feel that it is very incorrect to state that all teams should follow RB's lead and just copy them. Aerodynamics are far more complex than just one aspect..

I can't imagine the sidepods are anywhere near as important as the floor, given these are ground effect cars. Do you even get any downforce from the sidepods? I can imagine in layman's terms all you want to do is make sure the air flows past them as easily as possible, whilst cooling the car as much as necessary?

Whilst downforce is the important facet of a f1 car it has to be done correctly otherwise you can end up with a slow car. They are all important from the front wing all the way down the te rear as all, even the little winglets, nooks and crannies work together. It's not always about air flowing evenly over them as aerodynamics create air eddie's and can be designed to stall airflow as well...
