Thanks and as I thought he didn't cross from one side to the other.

Crossing or not is irrelevant. The problem is being on track when it is active.

Sure, when the car has crashed on track and they need to go on the track in order to get to safety there is no problem. They're not expected to teleport from car to safety. The issue is situations like Max there or Lewis when he crossed the track where the driver has gone onto a live track without permission.

To be honest I'm not sure what the rules are about them going onto the track after exiting a broken car, that tweet and BBC article main point is about Lewis crossing the track. I agree and I said that Max shouldn't have been on the track as he was already off the track when he got out and could have gone the other way. However going all the way across a track is a lot worse than walking along a track for several metres before leaving it again.

All I'm saying is that to me the two incidents are not comparable, I agree that it's stupid thing to revisit.

Well, I hope we can talk about the rules without getting into any stupid Max/Lewis bitterness.

The rule, 26.7 of the Sporting Regulations says:

26.7 During the period commencing fifteen (15) minutes prior to and ending five (5) minutes
after every practice session and the period between the commencement of the formation
lap which immediately precedes the sprint session and the race and the time when the
last car enters the parc fermé, no one is allowed on the track, the pit entry or the pit exit
with the exception of:
a) Marshals or other authorised personnel in the execution of their duty.
b) Drivers when driving or on foot, having first received permission to do so from a
marshal.
c) Team personnel when either pushing a car or clearing equipment from the grid
after all cars able to do so have left the grid on the formation lap.
2022 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations 25/107 30 September 2022
d) Team personnel when assisting marshals to remove a car from the grid after the
start of the sprint session or the race.

The rule isn't about "crossing the track" it's about being on it. I don't think there's any difference between walking along the track on the racing line, and crossing it, other than the particular place and time they did so.

Thanks for posting the rule, lazy journalism doesn't help :)

if anything, he walked on track further than it was wide, so does that make it worse?

I'd say no as it's easier to avoid someone sticking to a side of a road than someone going across.

Anyway I was under the impression earlier that it was about going across the track and not just being on it without permission.

Don’t be silly. I still find it incredible that other drivers even talk to Max, after walking away from that incident without even a token glance back to see if Hamilton is still alive underneath his car. Absolutely unforgivable.

I wonder if the FIA is trying to bury this now they’ve seen the public reaction to “reassessing” it. Absolute nonsense. I always viewed “crossing” the track as simply being on it. Otherwise you could walk 95% across it, then turn back. And be twice more dangerous in doing so than someone who actually just crossed.
