Its the double benefit of being max.
He's so good in such a good car there really is no point. Makes total sense. If its inevitable, just let him go.

F1 would be a lot better to watch without max. That's not to take anything away from him, but it really would.
Blaming Max for the other teams failings is one way of looking at it. Happens every year, one team gets it right and the others don't.

At the end of the day, the teams are fighting for the WCC and the resulting prize money, so throwing it down the drain in the sprint just isn't logical. As much as we'd all like to see some racing, McLaren aren't going to risk 4th.

That’s all well and good but we’re talking about the sprint where there is little strategy, and nobody “out of position”. It’s also not as if they were racing for 25 points. I’d say it’s the perfect opportunity for Lando to go wheel to wheel with Max, in fact the whole idea of sprints were to take out the strategy, tyre management etc. of the full race and force drivers to actually go wheel to wheel.
 
Shame no chance of rain today or something to liven up what looks like another walk in the park for Max.

Will be interesting to see how the rest get on today in terms of longer runs.

Unfortunately that's not going to happen in this era of F1 and especially towards the end of the season. The drivers/teams are worried about accidents, costs, future grid penalties due to changes of broken engines/gearboxes and the chance of losing points in the constructors. I can guarantee some teams tell their drivers not to push/take too many risks in post session meetings prior to the sprint race.

Whilst the sprint is a good idea and a chance for fans to see 'extra racing', I see it more as a spoiler to what will happen on the Sunday in its current format.

We now already know that:
  • Max will drive away into the distance again
  • The Mercedes are terrible in a straight line and can't do anything about it, which will kill any suspense in on track battles
  • Which teams/drivers can make the tyres last the length of a stint
  • The "DRS Train" effect is hilarious here. The first two thirds of the sprint the drivers can actually all remain within a second of each other, which may look exciting but doesn't always lead to passing. Once the tyre deg kicked in, the race settled down and everyone was spread out.
George Russells comments about Max and Landos lap times on his in lap summed it all up really.

I don't think @413x is blaming Max, or Red Bull for that matter, but this year would be a fabulously close and entertaining year without them there. That's just how it is sometimes.

Yeah I'm not blaming them. Just stating that it would be a better watch without.

I mean you barely see his car on the TV as its out in front on its own.

Why would anyone in second Even bother trying to catch up with tyres etc as they are?

I'm all for the springs, as Brundle said 20 odd laps of racing is always better than an hour of watching Free Practice (for the fans anyway).
But they need to mix up the format - don't make it count toward the existing Drivers and Teams Championships but have it as a separate entity and then teams may be more willing to go for things like reverse grids (or partial reverse grids / top 10 reverse like in some other series).

I'm not totally convinced it will avoid it "ruining" the Sunday for us (regardless of where a car starts we're likely still to be able to tell if its fast or not!)
 
I'm know it's totally impractical but I'd love the sprint championship to be separate from the main and for it to be done in the same spec cars like F2. Everyone wants to see the drivers race each other in equal machinery. No knock on effect of crashing your car in the sprint for the main race on the Sunday. Have Friday as practice with both cars. Saturday qualy and race of sprint cars. Sunday qualy and race for F1.

Yes Bernie, you should be surprised to be there. You should be watching it on a very small TV at his Majesty's pleasure.
