Jeddah

When was the track built?

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is, you won’t be surprised to hear, a temporary street circuit (albeit adorned with some permanent sections), located on the Corniche – a 30km coastal resort area of the ancient Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. Designed by the Tilke company, in conjunction with Formula 1’s own Motorsports team – who used Google Earth for their initial investigations into potential layouts – F1’s Ross Brawn said of the track: “What we want to see is a race circuit. We don’t want Mickey Mouse circuits. We don’t want those old classic street circuits with 90 degree turns. We want fast sweeping circuits, circuits which are going to challenge the drivers – and they are going to love it.”

When was its first Grand Prix?

The inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix took place in 2021, the race joining its Middle Eastern counterparts in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi – while like those races, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix also takes place under floodlights.

What's the circuit like?

Fast. Very fast. Average speeds around the Jeddah Corniche Circuit are around 250km/h – quicker than those at Silverstone, and second on the 2021 calendar only to Monza – aka ‘The Temple of Speed’. It is, quite simply, the fastest street circuit ever seen in Formula 1 – while the track also features the most corners on the calendar with 27, many of them quick, sinuous bends as the drivers wend their way along the Jeddah waterfront.

To be added!

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

I think it's too dangerous, but perhaps not so much if the first RB is in clear air with no-one to challenge. I might watch this but I do feel it's been designed for the DTS generation, waiting for crashes etc. rather than decent racing.

I think people are over-estimating how far ahead RB are, and how close to the pointy Aston are: Bahrain was a track that played to the strengths of both. Red Bull are still going to be strongest, but not galloping into the distance. Aston won't benefit from the same massive tyre wear advantage at this ultra-low wear circuit - especially with Pirelli bringing the same lineup of tyres as last year.

Sprint race followed by qualifying an hour later on Saturday... Is this a new format?

The Sprint Race is F2...

As an aside, I wish F2 would go back to having the Feature Race on Saturday and then the Sprint Race on Sunday. It made much more sense to do the reverse grid based on the Feature Race result than on the Qualifying result. Also: the F2 season is again running much too late into the F1 season, wrapping up in November is going to make it much harder for F2 drivers to secure F1 seats.

I expect this track will favour Ferrari more they seem to have a strong (but unreliable) engine, but I think RB are so much quicker overall it won't matter. Although Horner will probably start with the gaslighting we aren't that far ahead and the other teams will out develop us in a few races because of our penalty etc

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Aston slip behind Merc here, Merc were fast in the high speed corners and Aston seem to have more mechanical grip.

With Leclerc getting a 10 place penalty and only their B list driver to go up against Max, it's going to take a lot of luck for Ferrari to get anything even if they're close on pace.
