Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Sao Paulo

When was the track built?

Building work began on what ended up being called the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace – but what is more commonly referred to as Interlagos – all the way back in 1938. The track designers took their inspiration from three main circuits: Brooklands in the UK, Roosevelt Raceway in the USA and Montlhery in France.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Buoyed by the success of Brazil’s Emerson Fittipaldi, Formula 1 first jetted into Interlagos for a world championship race in 1973. Fans were treated to a home win in the first three Brazilian Grands Prix, with Fittipaldi victorious in 1973 and 1974, while Carlos Pace won in 1975.

What’s the circuit like?

Like many pre-World War II tracks, Interlagos features banked corners, with the drivers beginning their lap on a sort of half oval – in fact, between 1957 and the track’s return to the F1 calendar in 1990, Interlagos could be run as a giant oval. After wiggling through the Senna S and down to Turn 4, the drivers then go through a snaking in-field section with some challenging camber changes, before slinging back up the hill and through the banked final turn.

Why go?

A carnival atmosphere really does dominate in Brazil, and watching Formula 1 cars alongside the locals is something every F1 fan should experience. True, it doesn’t look like there’ll be a local driver to cheer on any time soon, but that won’t stop the party at Interlagos.

Where is the best place to watch?

Because of the bowl-like nature of the track, a place in Grandstand A on the banked entry to the start-finish straight will give you a double whammy of views, allowing you to see the cars winding through the infield section and then passing underneath you. On the other end of the straight, Grandstand M will put you on top of the first corner and the Senna S, the best spot to watch overtakes on the track.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Best track. Gonna go for a bold prediction here: Ferarri win the Constructors, Lando the championship

That's a brave take, especially Norris - but the how's and points per race etc. has all been discussed.

Ferrari for the constructors could be on though but I don't think so. I struggle to see them making up the points to McLaren in the remaining races unless they continue their current form. But with the ebb and flow of this season can they really?

On a side, looking up the constructor points, I found: https://www.formula1points.com/season/season-teams/2024 which shows quite how consistent McLaren have been! Both RBR and Ferrari's lines are a but lumpy but McLaren's is almost the best fit line already.

I fear Max will be back near the top step this weekend. We know he was running an old engine which was down in power so that would fully explain being behind McLaren and Ferrari. With a new engine he’ll likely be back fighting the top 2-3 drivers and with (as above) DRS aplenty it’s going to be a walk in the park for him even if he does start from towards the back. I’m a total pessimist but I wouldn’t be surprised if he won the sprint or race, or both :(

Best case scenario for the WDC is if Piastri has been taking tips from Bottas on how to help his teammate in the first corner (not corner specific - I can’t remember what circuit that was..) and Max DNFs and Norris wins. If there’s only 5 or so points between what they take here then it’s pretty much over.

It seems to me that RB's issues are more related to excessive tyre wear through a stint, not engine power.

If it's going to be a wet race, then it's anyone's for the taking. If it's dry I fully expect more Ferrari dominance, followed by Lando and Max fighting to 3rd and 4th.

The Hungary race where Bottas went ten pin bowling into turn 1? ;)
I am actually surprised in the money driven and corrupt world of F1 - and given the current likeability of Max to have hit new lows - that no conspiracies are floating around about someone taking him out.

I literally have no idea what to expect this weekend. Very hard to predict, which makes it good!

Thats the one :D

Unfortunately I think most people would agree it's far more likely Max would be the one over-defending and taking someone out to protect his lead. Whether on purpose or not is the question...

They don’t have the mechanical grip and balance dialled in this year and when they do get near a decent setup, it either eats the tyres or has braking issues.
