I'm actually waiting to see what happens to all the prices.
From where I stand prices are not important unless I am in the market to buy.
And I was, and I was lucky enough to have a result and have the money for a 7970.
And, it's faster across the board than a 580. From what I recall when I was sifting through hundreds of benchmarks the 7970 was absolutely faster in everything. Sometimes not by much, but it was a resounding victory.
I find that pretty exciting. Not because I bought one, but because we now have a new fastest card. It doesn't really matter by how much it is faster, because faster is faster no matter what way you look at it.
As I have said before man, I was desperate to get a 3gb 580. I really, truly was. I loved my 470 and the 6970 fiasco was a bloody nightmare. But I'd have just been a mug to pay £430+ for a card that was slower in absolutely everything, even when overclocked. I may aswell have set light to my money.
IMO the 7950 is even more exciting than the 7970. Simply because it's a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's less boring, it needs to be done manually by the owner.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the perfect recipe for a sure fire hit? Kinda like the old Opteron that could be pushed to equal its FX big brother that cost almost three times as much? or the original 1.8ghz Allendale Core 2 that did 3ghz on air as easy as pie?
So whether you find the 7950 exciting or not is here nor there tbh. It will be a massive success for AMD. Even more so than the 7970, because it needs to be played around with to get the best out of it. And I think that was 100% what AMD intended. They know how people want to wring every last ounce of performance out of a card themselves.
