How to boot an Abit board from a USB flash drive
http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=121953

The links in the first post should get you an appropriate BIOS (if it's a beta you will probably have to change the file name to .bin from Bxx)
Added to the first thread where the bios is. . . !

Seemed to be time to do a walkthrough on this. Booting to a DOS prompt from a USB key is easy to do, is the best way to flash your BIOS, and has a load more uses. Hell, you can even put an entire OS on a big one if you want - which can make a really neat option for, say, an in-car PC. No need for a shock-prone conventional hard disk.

Anyway. To do this, the first thing you need to find is the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

Install it, and then use it to format your USB key as a DOS startup disk like this:
hpdf.jpg

You can select FAT or FAT32 as the file system, but do not select NTFS! The HP utility installer package should come with the DOS system files, or you can use your own.

Note that Windows built-in format utility will not create the necessary active primary partition on your drive key, so go get that HP tool, it works, the Windows one doesn't!

If you are going to use the drive to flash your BIOS, copy over the Awdflash, binary file, batch file or however else you want to do it.

Once done, restart your system with your USB drive connected and DEL into the BIOS.

The key setting is in the Hard Disk Boot Priority section:
hdbp.jpg

You need to put USB-HDD0 - your flash drive, above your primary boot hard disk. In the image above, the disgo has been moved up above Intel Volume0, which is the OS boot volume.

Once done, make sure that Hard Disk is one of the three boot device options, and it might also be worthwhile disabling the "Boot Other Device" function, as this is often a cause of weird boot problems.

F10 and exit, and when your system restarts, it should boot from your USB drive. Simple!

I'm being kinda lazy by asking this but what FSB are these boards hitting?
Upto around 525FSB but dont quote me & thats on the 1066 FSB Strap, I'll get around to posting my own results soon.

Wow! Excellent news! funny really because I made a sarcastic comment on the Abit forums saying that the info they gave me regarding an official bios being released on tuesday! oh well only a day late! :) :)

Updated the bios details on the original post. :)

I'll start doing my build now. . . lol

Just for infomation purposes:-

The links to the ftp servers for downloading the Bios ID: 11 (Latest Official Bios) have now all been fixed:- So basically if you go onto this website clicking on the Asia/Europe/US now works http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/uk/mot..._NAME=AB9+QuadGT&fMTYPE=LGA775&pPRODINFO=BIOS I sent the webmaster a couple of e-mails.

The following directory on the ftp servers will hopefully be removed bios/qb9quadgt/ as that was the typo error directory it was created to in error.

Hope that makes sense.

Update: Added a new beta bios to the original thread, relating to the issue of a minority of people losing the lan port which should be resolved.

Remember this is a beta bios & use at your own risk.

May I ask, if any of you have used ram with this board that isnt on the above compatability list which fully works, please let me know by adding which ram your using to the thread, I'll then add it to the original post.

Thanks.

Thanks for that. I haven't seen this issue myself, but you're doing a sterling job of keeping that 1st post up to date. This is definitely the tidiest of the official threads, and I think it's because that initial post answers so many questions in one place.

Thanks - please keep it up!
No problem at all, infact I'll probally do this for any future boards I aquire, next will be the DFI P965-s Dark Infinity - I'll definitly keep this thread upto date. :)

that issue seems to have largely involved running memtest - a weird 1 for sure.
Oh right, didnt know that is that using the dos version? any more info would be appreciated & I'll add it to the info I compile with the beta bios in question.

Found the problem - my GSkill 2GB PC6400 kit. It boots fine with a generic 1GB 6400 stick in it!

Bit annoying as it does list my ram on the opening post  I'll flash to latest BIOS and try it again later.
Indeed quite a few people are using the G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 Kits on numerous forums. Infact it should boot at the default 1.8v because it did for me when I owned the QuadGT & HZ's. Have you adjusted the voltage to the reccomended spec 2.1v?

Have you managed to sort the G.Skill HZ ram out yet?
Duke said:
You can just use the FlashMenu flasher which is part of uGuru, in Windows. I didn't realise this until spending the last hour fiddling with booting cd-roms and usb pens! I thought it was odd Abit didn't have a Windows bios updater!
I will never use a windows version of a bios flasher, have seen too many bad flashes including one of my own back when I had an Asus A8V Deluxe.

Duke said:
Used the windows flasher to put on the beta bios - it shows version 10 again (?).

Not overly impressed with this board so far. I hope a future bios will fix the ram and the disappearing lan card - can't use the web on my system now.
Hi, I've just updated the beta bios link - see if that bios reports the same, it is supposed to fix the disapearing lan.
Duke said:
Ok I put on the latest official (11) bios and swapped back to the GSkill - didnt work. Put the generic back in, set 2.0v on VDIMM, put GSkill back in - didn't work.
When the system fails to boot, what numbers came up on the LED post code on the motherboard itself?

Also try posting the problem on here:- http://forum.abit-usa.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48

Running the beta bios now but gskill ram still doesnt work with this. No major problem as I have 2x1GB DDR800 anyway.
Thats really weired seen as it works on your DS3, I had the very same ram working on the QuadGT. . . very puzzling.

I havent got this board anymore otherwise I would have a dabble. . . .

Try here:- http://forum.abit-usa.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48

If you havent registered, maybe worth doing so. . . all the Abit fanboys/ experts/fanatics use those forums & 9 times out of 10 you will get a reply explaining things to sort out your problem.

Can anyone check the latest :13 bios & see if it only recognises the default cpu voltage & defaults back to the mininum for the cpu?
