Sorry for the thread revival

Going to venture into OC'ing 8320, it is currently sat on an M5A97 Evo R2.0 board with an EVGA 750W G2 PSU.

Any tips, I have never OC'd manually before, used an ASUS OC utility but the computer kept crashing so I'm guessing it was unstable.

Would like to get the CPU to around 4.5+ if at all possible.

It has probably been doing in this thread but I cba lookin through 97 pages to find it.

Any help would be brilliant as I have no idea tbh

I will give you my 4.5GHz OC on an 8350. This also worked on my M5A99X rev 1.0 board.

It may be better to start 1x multi less and a bus frequency of 225MHz initially to get a handle on how the CPU performs and then incrementally increase the overclock. I assume that you have a decent aftermarket cooler and good case airflow as it will not overclock with the standard heatsink.

Disable Turbo
Set vcore to 1.42 - 1.45V
Set multi to 18x
Set bus clock to 250MHz
Set CPU LLC to extreme
Set CPU/NB LLC to very high
Set CPU current to 130%
Set CPU/NB current to 120%

All other voltages leave on auto for the time being.

Set HT to 2500MHz
Set NB to 2500MHz

Set memory frequency and timings and get it close to your memory.
Set Vmem to 1.6 - 1.65V if > 1600MHz.

Reboot and check CPUz and temperatures, run ASUS realbench or similar do not run prime as it probably will not pass.

Thanks Nkata I will do as you suggested and give it a try tonight.

I have a H80i cooling it and a 300r with a full compliment of SP120's sitting in there at the moment.

When you say go up in stages with the multi say start at 17, then 17.5, 18, 18.5 etc etc

At what point should I need to up the bus clock speed if required? When the pc fails to load windows?

As I said I am a complete beginner so these quesions may be coming thick and fast later!

Basically, I would start with the bus clock and go 225, 230 etc. and see if for some reason the frequency alone causes an error.

Then try 0.5x increments in multiplier. If it fails to boot on ,for example, 18 x 250, try 18x 245.

There will be a lot of experimentation to find the best result and keep an eye on the HT / NB / memory clocks each time you change anything.

Always have CPUz and HWmonitor or similar open on the desktop when testing your overclock and stop the tests if CPU temps approach 65C inder load. I would recommend max 55C for normal use gaming etc.

Finally having got a stable boot and temperatures, back it off a notch (5-10 MHz clock) and then try to reduce the voltage a bit.

The maximum stable bus clock I had on the M5A99X mobo was 304MHz

Then try all your software, games etc. and see if you get errors.

I have my bus speed at 230*19.5. It's also important to try and keep your CPU-NB clock as close to 2200 as possible. The chips poorly tolerate increased CPU-NB clocks without significant volts for very minimal performance gain.

Also with your board you must have some form of active cooling on the socket. If you have a 120mm fan blowing on the socket that will be sufficient.

Unfortunately the M5A97 Evo is either 4+2 phase or 6+2. This means you're not going to get anywhere near 5ghz.

The best I could manage out of mine was 4.3ghz. If you follow this link here -

228mhz bus (was the max I could get) with a 19 multi and 1.4v (which drooped to 1.33 odd).

The limitation is the voltage. Once you start touching it the VRMs heat up fast, and if you push too high it will throttle to 1.7ghz.

The EVO R2.0 has a 6+2 phase digital MOSFET VRM. They will also not throttle until they hit something silly like 76C (they are pretty robust). I got mine to 4.5 on air and the VRM temp did not exceed 67C in Realbench and AOD.
 
Right currently have it stress testing fine.

Core speed 4303.9 hmz
Multiplier x19.5
Bus speed 220.7mhz
Fsb 2207.1 mhz

Sitting at 49c with a 100% load on the prime95 blend.

70C socket temp is good in Prime with 1.4V.

Now stop using it and start testing with AMD Overdrive instead. Otherwise you're not going to be able to clock higher if you insist on using it for stress testing.
 
What's the most accurate temp reading software?

I have:
AMD 8320
Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0
Sandisk 120GB SSD
1TB Hybrid Seagate
Thermis CPU Cooler
Superflower Golden Green 650W

Just bought a Phantek Enthoo Luxe case which will arrive tomorrow and got back the Gigabyte Windforce 280X today from RMA.

Hoping to push the clock up as it's currently at stock and using the auto clock the voltage was going crazy and the temps were going past 66 on the AI suite reading.

I have core temp but the reading is different to what the AI suite is giving me and I use fanspeed too which gives a temp closer to the AI suite reading although usually a degree off.

Wanting to see what I can get with the Thermis attached if it's not close to 4.5 I may look at a different CPU cooler!
 
I always used HWmonitor, just because thats what I've always had on my system as it does everything. Seems to do things pretty accurately as far as I can tell.

Thermis is pretty good, though may be worth investing in a slightly higher end one if you want to push really high clocks. Should definitely be able to reach 4.5!

I've set the bios back to default and i'm getting terrible performance in BF4.

Everything is set to ultra with a Gigabyte windforce 280x and the CPU is spiking at random intervals and I'm getting 50 degrees as seen above.

Tried following the overclock guides but the voltage settings don;t make sense!
