***Official AMD Mantle Thread***

Yea i remember it being in the first Beta. DX11 runs ok on Ultra with my setup but im sick of Windows blacking out my second monitor and that stupid message about keeping desktop setting that knocks me out of full screen. Running borderless mode seems to fix these 2 issues.

Anyway i think the game itself is crap, run n gun rubbish isnt for me.

origin is annoying as **** lol it just asked me to update then immediately forgot what my login was, and then the password recovery is super unhelpful
20th attempt at guessing i got in tho :)

EA_Rick : I get it Detroit, I can understand your feelings on this. I am actually waiting on an answer about this since this thread appeared, just its a bit busy today so I don't expect to know right away. I'll keep trying to get info on it but right now all I can say is we'll try find out whats going on. I imagine its probably nothing and that its just not there for the beta, but I can't say that for certain, so if you are happy to leave it with me, I'll do what I can to find out.

You didn't Cereal, don't worry about it, I just get that a lot and while I would love to be able to do things like that, I just don't have the ability, and wonder sometimes whether others think I can just make changes like that. Sorry you are having issues; maybe we could go through some stuff with you and see what might be causing the problem? I'd be happy to help if I can :) Let me know what is happening.

~Rick.

EA_Rick: Ya, I locked it for you but I will keep it to hand so that the devs can use it as feedback, no harm in it I say.

But on the topic, I found something that might put your mind at ease, sorry for the quote it might look a bit strange:

On June 9 EA announced that three of its upcoming games would support Mantle: Battlefield Hardline, Dragon Age Inquisition and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. Each of these brings new features, maps and gameplay to already-popular franchises. If the results we saw with Mantle in Battlefield 4 are anything to go by, these games should absolutely fly on AMD Radeon™ hardware.
The above is taken from here on the AMD site: http://community.amd.com/community/...g/2014/06/10/more-mantle-games-are-on-the-way

Hope that helps a little.

Right, I'll keep this in here, since it only happens when using Mantle.

System is as follows:

5960X @ 4.4GHz
SOC Force Motherboard
16GB DDR4 RAM
2x R9 290X 4GB

Everything is watercooled, if it makes any difference. All temps seem fine, and the system is stable.

When I play BF4 using DX, VRAM usage is not that high - around 3GB I think. However on 64 player maps in busy scenes, fps drops to an unacceptable level, so I want to use Mantle.

BF4 settings are all ultra and the res is 3440x1440.

Issue: when using mantle, every few minutes, FPS will drop to sub 10 for a second or two at a time. This happens around 4-5 times in a row, then goes back to normal. Now it feels odd, it doesn't feel as if FPS has dropped, if feels more like huge lag spikes.

Overall, the best playable experience is using DX, but by having two AMD cards I would obviously prefer to use Mantle.

What I have done: I'm using the latest drivers, I have cleared the cache folder and tried everything Matt has asked me to, which includes resetting game settings, restarting the PC, looking in task manager for anything odd. My CPU will generally have 1 of the 16 cores at 100%, but average which shows is around 20-30% when gaming.

Screenshot with the overlay when this happens:

Any ideas guys? I think it is a VRAM issue however the max usage I have seen is 3880 so I am not 100% convinced; certainly enough to entertain buying two 290X 8GB cards and risking my waterblocks not fitting and dealing with selling my current cards.

One of the 16 cores being at 100% sounds odd, how did you check this so i can compare on my setup? Using Mantle I'd expect cpu load to be spread evenly across cores.

Just by having task manager open on my 2nd screen. It was always the same core as well.

Maybe the game isn't seeing all CPU cores and is only using a single one? I've no idea how to check this?

Can you give me a print screen of what you're looking at so i can check mine and compare?

BF4 has a memory leak with Mantle and running on 8.1 and you are probably going over the 4GB S2kip.

http://wccftech.com/dice-eas-david-...d-memory-leak-issue-fix-coming-driver-update/

A relatively old tweet (thanks for the tip, Joao611) from David Sirland, Producer of DICE EA confirmed the existence of a memory leak issue in Windows 8.1 environment and Radeon GPUs. January has seen an unusual amount of graphic card trouble and an interesting issue appeared in AMD’s Radeons or more specifically Radeons running in Windows 8.1. Many Windows 7 users swear by their OS, and it looks like time has once again shown that their bias might be justified (till Windows 10 arrives at any rate).

As far as I know, the issue has only been confirmed in Battlefield 4. I contacted AMD for their official word and Head of Global Technical Marketing, Robert Hallock confirmed the issue as present in Battlefield 4 (Windows 8.1 only). It appears that just like in the past, AMD has actually helped DICE track down the issue, which is appreciable considering the fact the game is now over a year old. While the exact cause is not known, the issue will be resolved in the next iteration of beta driver update from AMD. Some users reported the issue as being more severe over extended gaming sessions, and while my sample size is fairly limited, I thought it was an interesting point to note.

Memory leakage is an interesting phenomenon in which memory allocation is managed incorrectly, so much so that memory that is no longer needed isnt released (or released properly). This results in sudden and unexpectedly large performance hits to otherwise perfectly functioning games. The good news is that the issue is only limited to Battlefield 4 and Windows 8.1 on top, the even better news is that the fix will be coming soon in a beta driver update from AMD. If you are one of the users plagued by this issue then I would suggest you hang tight till the beta driver arrives, at which point it’s just click and install.
Battlefield 4 is one of the most played first person shooters in the world and one of the flagship titles of Mantle API. Any drastic performance hit in a Radeon only situation automatically raises eyebrows, so I thought I would also mention that (so far) there appears to be no relation between the use of Mantle API and the memory leak. Its just a good old, coding boo boo from the looks of it.

It's what my first instinct was, and I'd love to order a couple of 8GB 290X's, but as I've said elsewhere, I don't know if my blocks will fit on them and I'm not sure it's worth the effort/outlay.

Well my BF4 issue still hasn't gone away.

So I've ordered a pair of 8GB cards, will see if my waterblocks fit then look at BF4 again.

Just to update, since changing to a 980 this issue has now gone (I decided against 8GB cards).

So I don't know if it's an AMD driver issue, Crossfire issue, game issue or what not.

I'm uploading a BF4 Mantle video to youtube, I'll post it here when it's ready.

Can you give me the settings you used so i can test them myself to see if i can recreate it? Thanks. :)
