one thing i did notice, just like Alfie786 CPU-Z mem timings were all wrong

cas letency 32.00
Ras to cas 5
ras precharge 2
cycle time 12 clocks

did not have time to investigate as the board died soon after
I have the exact same memory timings in CPU-Z, did you find out the reason for this?

After only a ‘light to moderate’ overclocking phase during the last week, here is what is stable “so far”…

** Note AMBIENT AIR TEMPS – 31c (the joys of living in Cyprus! – And that’s WITH the Aircon on!)

CPU – 3.55Ghz (10X 355)
CPU Voltage – 1.42v (1.45v in BIOS)
CORE TEMPS (as reported by PC Probe II) – 36c idle / 49c Full Load (prime95 + TAT 100% load on 2 x cores at same time)
CORE TEMPS (as reported by TAT) – 48c-51c idle / 67-72c Full Load (as above)
WATER TEMPS – 33c-35c (before going through rad)

DDR3 RAM – 1440Mhz

8800GTX GPU – 650Mhz Clock, 975Mhz Ram (O/C with Riva Tuner)
CORE TEMPS (Nvidia Control Panel) – 49c idle / 55-58c Full load
WATER TEMPS – 37c-42c (after going through rad)

3DMark06 (latest version) = 14,024

Problems To Report:

Only issues are…
Upon first booting, sometimes the corsair ram cooler fans make a vibrating noise for about 30 secs before ‘settling’.
Havnt managed up update BIOS yet as it is 2mb and cant fit it on the floppy (need to get USB flashdrive or something I guess)
Errrr… hmm, think that’s it really…

All in all, mega happy customer so far…

Any questions, please ask.

Cheers

Andy

looks funky

you can update the bios from windows using the asus update program

just save the file on you desktop and run the asus update software

I would not recommend doing that way do update the BIOS. I had a Commando prior to this and it corrupted the bios using that method. Best bet is to use the Asus Flash utility in the bios itself, and you can use a USB drive to load/save the rom files.

ive done this over a hundred times on various boards, as many others have, as long as you take precautions, and be sensible (no heavy unstable clocks, no other major tasks in the background) there will be no problems, also at the end of the flash it will verify and tell you if its done or not, although ive never had it report its unsuccessful

All day yesterday i repeatedly tried to use the ez-flash option in bios to update my P5K-E bios but kept getting error after error and it wouldn't recognise my usb drive. I was reluctant to use the update program after reading all the horror stories. After reading the last post i thought sod it, i'll try it.

After 5 minutes i now have the latest 0503 bios and all is working perfect. It's got rid of the weird reading in cpu-z as well. The asus update program works fine :)

Just made sure i set the bios back to all default options, switched off anti-virus and firewall as well as all other programs whilst i updated bios.

Interesting to know I'm not the only one who has bought a dominator fan that makes an irritating noise.

Shoddy corsair quality.

Sorry :o

Intel E6600
8800GTX
4 x 1GB Ballistix PC5300
74GB raptor
corsair HX620
Lite-on sata dvd-rw
lots of watercooling in a Lian-Li PC-343

works fine with 3gb though
That's fine. ;) It might just be a faulty stick; have you tried different combinations of 3x 1GB to ensure they all work OK? Oh, and which motherboard do you have?

If you can get into the BIOS with 3GB, set all of the DRAM settings to the factory settings for your RAM. In fact, since we're troubleshooting, loosen up the timings to 5-5-5-18, at 2.2v (i think that's the right stock voltage for your memory) and run it at the lowest frequency possible. Then add the other stick and see if it works.

Thanks for that dude... I have used winflash & awdflash with my old abit boards and my Shuttle XPC, i do tend to get a little nervous when flashing the BIOS, particularly as i was living in Thailand for around 7 years before moving here to Cyprus 3 months ago and the power grid in thailand is a joke... just my luck, the power would go out just as i decided to flash the BIOS... Cyprus is a little better, no need for 5 UPS's like i used to have in THailand... anyway, thanks for the heads up, now running 604 BIOS instead of like 201 or whatever the hell it was...

i had a few "overclock failed - press F1 blah blah blah" at first, even after setting all the same stuff as i had before.. turns out, it was the "transaction boost" or whatever it's called was set to enable.. obviously my chip doesnt want to make friends with that particular feature! :(

THanks again Maddness...

Which is likely to cause the PC to be unstable first, FSB or RAM, when overclocking them both together?

In my previous post in this thread, I mentioned trying to overclock my RAM past 515MHz but unfortunately nothing would show up on my monitor after saving the BIOS. I guessing the FSB caused the PC to be unstable? :o

Just wondering as I haven't tried using ratios yet :p

It seems to be the FSB that was limiting my RAM's overclocking :o

Just trying to find what my Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 can do using 5-5-5-15 timings using 2.2V. At the moment it's at 571MHz :p

Wow, that's pretty good. I've just left mine at 531Mhz, 5-5-5-15 at 2.1v after hearing what happens to these after a while of running high voltage through them.

It's not Prime95 stable at 571MHz :( :p

I also tried 600MHz for fun, it boots into Windows Vista however when I tried a quick test by running Super PI 1M, it gave me a BSOD. Higher voltages will probably make it more stable although I don't want to go any higher than the maximum rated voltage :o

Currently the RAM is at 550MHz 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V, I ran a quick 30 minutes of Prime95 (blend), so far no errors whatsoever and I'll give it a longer run tonight :)

Hi guys im looking at a P5K Deluxe. Can anyone recommend a decent cooler that will fit without issue?

Also, is RAM compatibility ok with this board? How would the this week only OCZ 2*1gb (sli ready) go with it? Or does anyone else have any memory recommendations?

I probably wont overclock, a little if any.

Cheers guys.

It depends what cooling performance you desire. I mean, a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme would be ideal, but the Noctua NH-U12F is also very good. In fact, OcUK have the Ultra-120 on offer this week!

As for memory incompatibility, i haven't heard of any problems thus far. That SLI-Ready memory should be fine. Although, you can probably get some better performing memory for less; if you're willing to overclock it a little, that is. What frequency is this OCZ memory rated to run at?
