****Official Bulldozer Overclocking Thread****

A friend of mine who works for a particular hardware company has got a hold of an 8170 new stepping, apparently hes gotten it up to 5ghz under water and stable.
i asked him for a release date and all he told me was roughly march, i know what im getting ^^

Fancy running the Custom PC media benchmark?

Awful score :p

Results:

Image editing: 1013 points.
Video encoding: 2401 points.
Multitasking testing: 1247 points.
Overall score: 1554 points.

Benchmarks finished.

Judging by my activity meter nothing on there runs more than 1 thread so it gets utterly demolished by everything Intel has to offer :(

I've found it much better on multithreaded stuff like CS5 :)

Not stable enough for benchmarks yet but it loads in to windows. Not entirely happy with the temps at the moment though so I've got some more tweaking to do - it took sheer brute force to get it to post at that speed :p

Loads in to windows at 5.2 by conks out shortly after. I've got a monster voltage going through it to get it to load up at that. Temps are just still within limits but I'm getting nervous about pumping much more through it without smothering it in liquid nitrogen :p

If anyone's got any tests they want me to run feel free to ask, I've got it paired up with a 6950 and some Kingston HyperX ram (8gb)

I've managed to get it benchmark stable @ 5GHz but I've backed it down to 4.2 with a 4.7 turbo for every day use as the bump in voltage t oget to 5 is... uncomfortably high. I've also lowered ther multi and increased the bus speed to 250mhz and I'm seeing good improvements (ie, 10-25% higher bench scores) than over just a higher multiplier.

Just got a FX 8150 (laugh all you like), got a bit fed up of the athlon II x3 thats was sitting in there lol and couldn't wait any longer for the next gen bulldozer/piledrive or whatever its being called >_>.

Anyways I've just started overclocking, I'm rather a noob at it so... (only ever used auto overclock software.. :/) i was wondering should i use prime95 to test stability and if so which version. I've got it to 4.5Ghz with 1.38v and I just bumped up the cpu/nb voltage from 1.1500 to 1.1750. I did use prime95 with blend for 3hours without a problem but i could only download version 26.3

Would be nice to have some feed back to whether I'm doing it wrong or not and some advice :)

has i said in the other thread, that's because when you up the bus, it up's the CPU NB and ram frequencys also. but u can do that with the CPU NB and ram multipliers also

so it's nothing special using the bus.

i've had a 8150 so i know

During Prime temps stay between 73C and 78C (all fans 100%). Idle temps around 42C with cpu fans set to silent (cpu fans around 38-40%) using the coolermaster v6gt.

And i will see if i can move the voltage down some more, thanks

I did use the standard thermal paste that came with the v6gt, maybe if i bought some higher grade stuff? Would it actually make much difference also what thermal would you recommend.

you may see a good drop in temp if the standard thermal paste they've used is crap stuff

i use OCZ Freeze but it's EOL now

i recommend ether IC Diamond 7-Carat Thermal Compound or Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound.

Cheers i was speaking to my mate earlier and he was saying AS5 was good, I'll order some in a bit see what the temp drops are and repost :). I have also reduced the voltage on the CPU to 1.365 and seems to be fine, did Prime95 for 5 hours and played metro 2033 on max for a bit without fault so I'm happy.

This is also the first forum I've joined (not really the forum guy). I like... hmm whats the word atmosphere? anways its nice and thanks for the feed backs

tbh if it's 73C - 78C under load i'd say keepit at stock until u get the Thermal Compound sorted

running it at 73C - 78C could damage it.

keep it under 55-58c

hmm, I'll launch metro and play for an hour or 2 while checking temps see if it reaches 55c if it goes over I'll revert back to stock settings. I wont be using anything more stressful than that for a week or so
