MW1 sold 5.5mil copies for the PC, just behind the XBox sales ...
Is piracy THAT much of an issue?

"We pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online). It blows me away at the amount of people willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do."

Could be a lot higher than we think.

I wonder why they refused to state this "fantastic percentage".

Normally places love to tout big numbers.

makes me think it's smaller than you think.

Doesn't matter ... it STILL sold 5.5mil copies, and is barely behind the XBox in sales.
I will predict now that unless dedicated servers are back, the PC version of MW2 will sell less than MW1 did and will be beaten by the 360 numbers by a larger amount than before.

It does matter. Clearly it does as you wouldn't be seeing these drastic things going on right now.

Let's try an example. Low number, say 10% of their sales were pirated. 10% of 5,500,000 = 550,000. Multiply that by 30 quid (roughly the price of the game) and you've got yourself over £16 million quid lost in sales. (hope my maths are right!).

You're again assuming all pirates would buy the game if they couldn't pirate it.

since every cod game that came out and yes there are some very busy cracked servers.

like already said though you get a lot of cheats on them.

what they need to work out and probably have is which is the best cash cow method

1 they go head make more money on maps packs now they have there iw.net in place which might cover the amount of people who dont buy the game through boycott . also with it harder to pirate they may gain sales that they would have normally lost . so they may actually make more than normally .(mp side sales)

2. they bring out somekind of patch or get it sorted before release. cant see this happening unless theres at least a million people behind the boycott and even then i think even if they are gunna take a big hit they ll do it to get there structure in place for future games. gaming is too large for things like this not to happen its been coming for years and will happen on all big games in the future!

That old chesnut.

It's a reasonably fair assumption to make.

why is it?

Take a look at all the "free beer glass/JD calender etc" threads, people are more than happy to get free stuff they care little about but I doubt you'd find one of them willing to pay RRP for those items

Either way they are playing the game without paying for it.

Yes, but it has rather major implications for your "calculations" doesn't it?

The piracy thing is quite frankly getting very boring now, the argument is very flawed, and my view is, it has NOTHING to do with the decision to not support dedicated servers, the very community that is being destroyed is the most faithful to the product that there is. The vast majority of CoD4 and WaW servers that are running are all paid for and run by clans, clans like to play competetivly so will usually have 2 or more servers, public ones and passworded match ones, both these servers will more often than not be at least running Punkbuster. All players that use these servers be they clan members or not, will have to have an original copy of the game to be able to play in them. So the "Threat" from piracy does not come from the very people Activision are turning their backs on.
I think it is all to do with control, mainly controlling the lifespan of the game, is it really a good thing for Activision to see how popular CoD4 is even now? with a new incarnation scheduled for every year, they do not want people to still be playing last years game, or heaven forbid, the year previous to that when the new model comes out, how do they control that? take ownership of the online game, because thats where the "real" life span of the game is. Just think if on the eve of the next release (post MW2) they announce no further online support of the current game? they wouldn't do that would they?
would they?

Whatever the mindset of the people who download games illegally (your example is a very poor one as they two items you mention are free promotional items and everyone likes a freebie) it doesn't justify it. Seriously wake up - it's your type of attitude towards the PC games market (and your attempted justification) that seems to be instilled in all those that illegally download games - and look where you are now (bye bye dedicated servers on one of the biggest releases ever).

As for my calculations; not at all. It was an ESTIMATE, and a very fair one at that. The fact remains that what ever the actual numbers it is still lost revenue (paying for a game is not optional, it's the law - those that don't are breaking it).

And I suggest you look in to estimation if you feel the need to somehow undermine my calculations above. :)

The hardcore, clan gamers are a minority compared to people like those who frequent gaming forums (like me) for news and info on new games or those that play casually - the two latter groups are where the money is for games developers.
