**OFFICIAL** Carling Cup Final Thread - Aston Villa Vs. Man Utd - 28/2/10 - Wembley

Out of interest, does anyone know what Man Utd's starting 11 cost compared to Villa's? ;)

£73.55m starting for Villa and £79.37m (plus whatever Rafael cost) for Man Utd. Not that huge of a difference, considering theres a £30m player in there. The figures might not be exact, just did it quickly from Wiki.

Hmm. Well, obviously I'm gutted to have lost, but there's obviously one question that needs asking, which would have totally changed the complexity of the game.

Gutted, but expected. Still got the FA Cup to look forward to, I guess.

Bit gutted that Villa lost today:(..was hopiong that they would have pulled off a victory but guess Utd were a bit too strong and especially so after Rooney came on...hes been simply immense this season...if Utd win the prem title, he will have a lot to do with it.

I just find it wierd that a last man tackle error receives 2 punishments (sent off and 1 goal down) A penaty itself is a huge advantage. In todays example Agbanlahor still had lots to do if he was going to score. A penaty allows him to take a shot free without Vinic interfering and no difficult angle.

Ok for one, a penalty is not a guaranteed goal, you have to score it. It's an advantage, and a very good chance to score, but they are missed sometimes. Vidic was yanking on his shirt for ages, he dragged the ball left to try and get a shot away and was then fouled. It's a card, be it yellow or red, and neither was produced. Vidic was later booked, which would be a sending off anyway, but of course that tackle may not have happened had he not been booked for the penalty.

of course by all means forget about the Villa players that also could have been sent off also

End of the day the match itself was a much better one for 11 vs 11, whatever excuses Villa fans want to come up with

Why do people compare prices paid as some kind of amazing barometer about how good/bad a team has done for the money spent.

Money spent on players has nothing to do with value of the players, you get player who ride out a contact because old club can't afford a new one(Owen), players who cost a lot(Berbs), youth players for next to nothing(Rafael, Fletcher,NEville, Evans) Giggs, Scholes, not sure if the last two were on the bench or not), Park who came from a far away land for not much cash, good value buys like VDS, Rooney when there wasn't anyone else around with the money to buy them. If VDS was 5 years younger and was bought when Chelsea/Liverpool had money and needed keepers, he'd have cost 3 times as much. You can't just not buy players you need because timing is bad.

Comparing current estimated value would be more useful and show Utd ahead, wages reflecting the quality of a player is another not terrible way to compare them, in terms of wages Utd would wipe the floor with Villa. I would think 3/4's of Villa's starting team yesterday is on a lower weekly wage than Anderson whose basically surplus to requirements.

As for saying the match was much better for being 11 vs 11, it was better for UTD and UTD fans, it might have been a far better game 10 vs 11, they often are. Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal aren't teams that normally turn into old school Bolton just because they've lost a man, they often try harder and play better.

Simple fact is Vidic should have had a red and theres nothing else to it, even if it was just a yellow he would still have obviously walked in the end. Rafael was maybe lucky to stay on the pitch, doing a pretty bad challenge right after being yellow carded.

As a fan of football, I'd prefer to have seen Vidic sent off, because, he deserved to be for cheating. I now don't know if Villa would have won or if Utd would have been brilliant, I don't know who deserved to win that game, just who got a lot of help.

But then Villa deserved to lose, how they can continue to play Heskey, who does nothing and looks as dangerous and talented as a sack of potatoes I really don't know. For the...... every single last game since Heskey was bought, Villa looked better when Carew was on the pitch. Downing and Milner were both pretty poor and did very little in the game, Downing especially, but the movement and threat of Carew even gave them more options and they both got a couple decent crosses in late on.

Of course by all means forget that Vidic commited enough bookable fouls to be sent off either way you look at it - its only because of that particular ref that he didnt - Id be interested to hear from people who think he deserved to remain on the pitch for the whole match...

Fair play to Man U - Rooney was the quality needed to decide the tie and they had far more clearcut chances on goal. Just think that Vidic decision ultimately led to that win. We didnt help ourselves in the 2nd half, but think without Vidic we would have had far more chances - Villas mentality just has been shocking lately and we let our heads drop far too easily...

EDIT: re DMs post - you wont find me defending Heskey, still dont understand why he starts ahead of Carew and as far I was concerned was only brought in when Carew was injured to give us another holding player. I know Carew cant play a full game week in, week out - but I dare say hed have more impact on the pitch to allow himself to be subbed rather than coming on as he does at the moment. Why Heskey still gets touted for England escapes me, perhaps I dont see his workrate on the TV, but that cant happen every game I see him play. MONs needs to get a decent long-term Carew solution - Heskey was never it...

So Cuellar didn't deserve to be sent off then? Not sure what Villa fans are harping on about, both teams were lucky not to get a man sent off!

The Vidic was an obvious red, the Cuellar was a yellow, after all, it was only mis-timed, not malicious. lol.

Couldn't agree more we need a quality striker, we are missing it bigtime.

no matter the result I still think the game staying at 11 vs 11 proved to be a more entertaining game, and more end to end and free flowing

If Vidic had gone (and Cueller) at least one striker would have been sacrificed , and possibly two with Rooney coming on as a central / 5th midfielder which would have made for a VERY different game , and far less entertaining

Villa had enough chances to win it and couldnt at the end of the day, no reason to believe their shooting wouild automatically have been better had Vidic been off the field

Is this the same Villa who couldn't beat Man Utd at Villa Park when we played with 10 men for over 60 minutes and actually looked the better team for most of it? You had more than enough chances to win the game yesterday, and could have even lost a player as well. While I can understand why Vidic wasn't sent off, I don't understand why he didn't even get a yellow card. That should be the talking point about the incident.

I love it when the 'how much did your players cost' argument comes out. Pathetic isn't the word. It's funny how it didn't come out when you beat us earlier in the season.

Has he being back since the cost of each team was linked? :p

So what you're basically saying is the fact of what the player cost is less relevant than your opinion of what they should cost? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever as a comparative, which is what was obviously being sought by the Villa fan.

DM rides again.
