How are the WW2 multiplayer servers ?
Is there anythign interesting and populated ?
I've got the Mossie and the Spit sitting in the hanger, but struggle to get motivation to put time into them beyond a little chilled out fly about offline now and then.
I couldn't comment. Haven't been in a WW2 one in a long time. The more I read of history, the less accurate the servers that I've been on are.
For example, by 42', most of the Luftwaffe were busy in Russia. That really changed during 43' with the stepping up of the German bombing campaign, when a lot of fighters were moved back to defend Germany. The implications being that over France, Russia and the Med, the Luftwaffe presence massively diminished.
Take the above into account, and we can see that:
- The Battle of Britain scenarios (this is more true of IL2/CLOD than DCS) should have Luftwaffe fighter presence, but with poor fuel states due to the range of the 109s at the time
- In sweeps over France in 41-43, the Luftwaffe had less presence and most raids over the UK were at night or small scale nuisance raids against ports and similar. Luftwaffe pilots were recommended to avoid getting into combat with enemy fighters
- The Luftwaffe were VERY mobile and responsive (not often explained well in history books), often flexing and moving to deal with the situation at the time. So yes they deployed to Italy to assist the Africa corps and bombed Malta very heavily, but only for a couple of time periods. Outside of those times, those squadrons were sent back to the Eastern front, or in defence of Germany and the RAF got to have the upper hand
- The initial eastern front period was massively in favour of the Luftwaffe, but then heavily reversed
Online servers typically try to aim towards a "fair balance" of equipment numbers and capabilities, with distances kept short to avoid long times getting back into the fight. The reality is that this was rarely the case. In most of the historic battles, one side invariably had the upper hand, whether that was with numbers of aircraft, technology/capabilities or pilot training. So I spend most of my time now on self built missions, inspired by real events.
For example, last night was a strike mission from a carrier against a radar site in Norway, put in place there to held defend the Tirpitz. It was a carrier launch in the Corsair, 100 mile flight each way in fairly ropey weather. Try to find the target, single pass to attack the radar, then another 100 miles back to try to find the carrier in the wild blue ocean. Most pilots used to say War Thunder would think that I was nuts and a lot of the time the only thing I saw were clouds and sea. In reality it was trying to fly smoothly to conserve fuel, whilst balancing engine cooling, and using dead reckoning to get to the target. It's a different approach.
