*** Official DCS World Thread ***

I guess it boils down to, I "want" it to be simple to get into, with minimal buttons to remember as I don't play DCS that often. But i think i'm going to have to face the fact, that either DCS is the wrong game for my level of playing, or I need to invest more time into playing DCS, and then i'll get more used to the buttons / mappings etc..

Given DCS is a reasonably serious simluator then I can't expect to play it like I used to play FA-18 Interceptor on the Amiga
DCS FC2024 is perfect for your needs. Ace Combat (played most of the series) is not just simple, its simplistic. FC is Ace Combat for grown ups :) But, conceptually, it is NOT (much) harder than AC. Turn on engines, turn on radar, select close range mode, lock on, fire - yes, there are more buttons than in AC (follow the enemy and fire, everything else is automatic). But these steps are common sense, there is no turn on dc inverter, turn on generator, wait to spool to 3000rpm, turn on ISFGBNXSER system to mode2 after waiting for a BIT test etc etc lark in FC. And the physics/flight dynamics are exactly the same as with full fat DCS modules - light years ahead of Ace Combat (and the Interceptor on the Amiga haha)

Your hotas is plenty good enough for anything in DCS (with a modifier or two). I would assign a modifier to the throttle button under your thumb, the buttons on the base would be gear, flaps, radar on/off toggle, maybe jettison. But yeah, plenty of buttons for FC.

If you just want to fly and shoot stuff, DCS might not be the optimum solution, and certainly not the F18.
The Flaming Cliffs (FC) 4 pack includes a bunch of aircraft that have a simplified set of controls and systems, whilst still looking good and sharing the depth of the DCS flight model.

FC is where I'm at currently, good enough for me at this point..

There are also free mods like the A4, which are good, once you've sorted stuff out.

I forgot to say i only play in VR.. given the immersion in VR.. I just don't see the point otherwise..

So I started looking through this guide.. and even in the first section..
  • Start Electrical Systems Right Shift + L
  • Contact the air traffic control tower and ask for permission to start up: Backslash, F5, F1, F3
  • (the tower should confirm your request, if not, do it anyway as they sometimes don't respond)
  • make sure your throttle is all the way off, (if you are using a keyboard it is already off by default)

  • Start Both Engines: Right Shift + Home
That's a lot of stuff already.. to either find with a VR headset on, or map to a HOTAS ...

So ideally i'm looking for a VR beginners guide, with recommended minimum HOTAS mapping to fly and shoot stuffs ;)
Get openkneeboard installed, works superbly in VR and you can put startup list, command list, images etc, anything you want in it. Helps tons.
BUT... when learning a new aircraft or often just a new system I'll go back to a normal screen so I can videos, writeups etc, just till I get the flow of what I'm doing then switch back to VR.

This is also where the full fat aircraft work out better as you don't need to map keys to every action for starting the aircraft you just flip the switches in the cockpit.

I’ve got to take my hat off to ED and their cinematics team, the 2025 and Beyond video released last night feeds directly into my dopamine stream.

On top of sexy aircraft shots, the dynamic campaign stuff, and lots of ground unit stuff going on makes me feel that we’ll see some good progress on things for us mud mover types.

I just feel that new shiny modules are great, but ED already have a lot on their plate without adding more stuff to contend with.

I also fly VR, but I’ve never tried open kneeboard yet, and interested to know the benefits over the standard kneeboard?

Is it install and forget, or something like VoiceAttack where you ha to start up every time?
I know it’s not much, but I don’t want to add more overhead to getting up flying than I already have.

Video on OKB, easier than me trying to go through it. It's had a LOT of updates since then, you can now add server live maps to it(the ones you usually see on a webpage), view discord through it for group breifings and loads of other stuff. Oh and add a graphic tablet and you can draw/take notes on it
Yes you will need to load it first but if you're taking the time to start a plane from cold n dark, 2s to click an icon before loading DCS isn't too much of an ask ;)
Or get one of the batch loaders for DCS and have that load all you're pre reqs first then DCS with a single click.

edit: hmm, might be good to add the video l link 8)

Can't wait to fly the F35 in the year 2134

Eagle dynamics video team always blow me away with their vids!

Slowly getting back into the pilot seat after some hardware upgrades. Can’t wait to fly the f35 and dynamic campaigns.

I never thought they could bring F35, but it could open the gates for other planes they have limited information on.
I know someone who works on the actual IRL F35 project. He said these 5th generation fighters are going to be boring in sims as the flying is so taken care of in software

Is the Iraq map worth buying? I've heard good things but also been disappointed before buying terrains.
The Afghanistan map is available for trial, and I believe it was made using the same tech methods, so should be similar quality, so you could see what you think of that… nothing to lose.

It’s a big fat depends.
With the number of maps that we now have, squadrons tend to standardise on a small number to ensure inclusion, and I don’t see Iraq being a forerunner. On top of that, only the north is fully populated. So the key are of conflicts are still to be finished.

Making up for that:
- the bit that is done looks great
- it does have space for carrier ops and extends to Qatar
- the map includes areas of Iran. If you look on the F10 map, Tehran is there, even if it’s currently without buildings

Given the above, it should be good for both Gulf Wars and the Iran/Iraq war

I am looking at buying the VKB Stecs standard mk2 version but I already have the CH pro throttle so it’s £300 for something nicer

I have the STECS std mk1, and came from the CH Pro too… definitely a worthwhile upgrade.
The mini joystick has a zero deadzone, and the throttle action is smooth combined with no erratic outputs.
I’ve not regretted spending the cash.
