*** Official Dota 2 Thread ***

I love this game but its infuriating. I play with 3 other RL friends, we aren't crap but we are far from good, and time after time we get matched against a clan that is just so much better than us. We all have full time jobs so play a couple of times a week, but its just depressing us more than anything!

We are getting matched against people who have sunk several hundred hours into the game. Valve are emphasising playing with friends so much, but at the moment its putting us right off.

Time isn't a good judge of skill, whole game is rated by ELO. Is this you? https://dotabuff.com/players/1981777 - You're in Normal bracket currently and your last game had rough parity in levels.

EDIT: ]{illswitch][engage is dragging you up, he is in the High bracket if this is you.

Aye that's me, I play with those3 in friends column. We are all varied skill level, 2 of us been playing dota on and off for years and 2 literally very new to dota2.

Last game was awful, do you think our hero picks are poor? That was in Single draft.

That was in Single draft.
Honestly, SD is in no way a show of skill if you're new to dota, I would not worry about SD games :)

You might find it easier with "matched pairs" - heroes which lane together and provide pretty much unparalleled grief. Lina & Sandking (double stun / high nuke), KoTL and Udying (Mega undying Q spam), Lion + Sven (double stun + disable), Veng+<melee stunner> you get the idea. Double stun murders all lanes.

Thanks for the advice, will try it out.

How do you go against 3 in 1 lane? We usually just go 2-1-2 obviously, but when theres 3 in one lane it really ****s us up and we don't know what to do.

Sniper is one hell of a powerful hero
Sure, if your entire team keeps you safe... He's food to anyone with a slow / stun though. If you're against morons then shadowblade can work but his complete lack of utility means you have to build your entire team around him and it means quite a bit of sacrificing in picks :/ A lot of people in this thread have commented on how good he is (and drow) but honestly, there is only so much you can solo on these two. Good examples of people who murder them in lane are champs like brood, any of the double stun combos from above (they absolutely BURN ranged carries), they are viable against teams with no stun but that should be seldom rare.

Trilaning really messes with people it's true. You either -
  • tri-lane right back
  • Sacrifice the lane (known as a suicide lane) with someone like BH who just needs levels to get track or tide (again, just needs 6 really)
  • Accept it is 2v3 and you play passive but your 2v1 lane plays aggressive
  • Completely leave it, go and gank or something. If they are moronic they will push the tower down (excellent - go back to farming it, they can't push further early game), if they are sensible they will freeze it.

Option 3 is what most pubs do. This is fine as long as their solo doesn't whoop you (it will tend to be a solo long laner, something like Windrunner or Dark Seer) and if your carry is in this 1v2 lane farming all day long then great - he will be getting more xp than their carry (their trilane-carry has to share it with the other 2 vs your carry sharing it with 1 so he will be getting 1/6th more)

If you're getting stomped be prepared to do 4 - it is a valid option upto high level play, you gank instead and stop their other lanes from also winning.

Pretty new to this - and MOBA's in general - but I'm finding it frustrating trying to learn in the solo queue. Regularly gets leavers and match abandons, so it never ends up being a decent or representative match. Interested in finding some other low/newish players to play (and learn fast) with. My Steam username is 'inkursion', add me please! :D

Yep, that's me. Don't worry about the hours... half of them are watching other people play/tournaments :) And even though I've played quite a few games, I'm still in the frustrating bracket of Solo Queue where I get lots of clueless players and leavers!

So it turns out making smurfs in dota 2 isn't as easy as LoL, I made one and within 3 games (first game - 2 people ran into towers within 1 minute and one left) I was in high bracket. I was trying to see if I could make a mid tier smurf to play with some of you as I appear to be dragging people up which made your experiences pretty mixed (these brackets are seriously lose - do not think of them as a good example of skill levels).

But i did find something that works extremely well - Phantom lancer. Get a sheild, build regen boots / soul ring (use soul ring > use Q to harass > use boots to heal up), no one knows what to do with you - you can push people out of lane super quick as soon as you have both items and then you farm farm farm. It's not a brilliant build but it's pretty amusing.

This weekend done a couple of games doing a venomancer + undying lane with a mate. That combo is so dam funny, you can kill anyone that doesn't have a blink. Once you both get to about level 6 and won your lane with about 5/6 kills just room the map and gank everyone. Think both games my undying score was like 25-2-30 or something silly.

Playing against bots might actually be a good way to learn if it wasn't for the fact there is always at least 1 tool playing a ****ing agility hero who just destroys the bots. Last game it became almost completely futile by lvl10 when our Shadow Assassin was already capable of killing basically everything without trying. It was quite sad towards the end when the entire team of 5 bots ganked him wih everything they had, chased him away, killed him, then he revived with the Aegis from Roshan and killed there entire team, chasing 1 of them all the way back to the fountain and then just camped outside it killing everyone who went out 1 by 1 in a few attacks.

RIP dotabuff - you tried to mess with the bull and got the horns. For those not following it, dotabuff were going to give everyone a "dotabuff rating" a ELO rating on a scale similar to HoN/LoL - even if you didn't want it to be shown. Valve obviously did not want this rating system to be public otherwise it would be in the client like HoN/LoL. Valve have just put in a patch due to go live on Friday that will by default, block 3rd party sites from accessing their data and overnight destroying dotabuff really.

Unless you put your details public. Which most people will probably do.
