**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

Considering trying survival, but I'm torn. No fast travel means that ammo for the weapons you're specializing in will be extremely valuable. It'll be frustrating to keep running out. With everything doing so much damage, is melee even viable?

Grrr .. Fallout did a update the other day which I missed, went to play some just now and got the pesky [M] infront of my saves. Then come to think about the Achievement mod, updated my precious version and it is now gone. Just lost about 40 min or so of playing which is not bad, could been much worse I guess !

What's the [M] all about? Never noticed it.

It means your game is modded and disable achievements, which I am not to fussed about but it also make completly new saves, so anything done without a M can't be found within the game if you would have to reload a bit further back. Might do something else to, not sure, I just know I prefer not having it there. :p

Having disliked the game when it released I took a chance & re-bought the season pass as Far Harbour really interested me :D

Well 40 hours later I have completed almost all the DLC & had a complete change of opinion. I think this game is brilliant now :D

Far Harbour is a must buy (I know the season pass is a lot of money its available on key sites for the old price if you look around). Around 15-20 hours of content, some new gfx, atmospheric locations, new creatures, weapons, missions reminds me a lot of some of the better Fallout 3 DLC as well.

Also finding out so many game features I never knew about before like changing the Power Armour attributes with mods like headlamp colours or filters (Pipboy filter is cool obviously!!). Since the Far Harbour DLC patch I also noticed the game is very smooth even @ 4K maxed out I am finding it runs very well. Before the patch it was sluggish but Bethesda have obviously fixed something in the background causing the slowdowns.

Fallout4 I now think is the greatest Fallout yet I hope the next DLC is as epic as Far Harbour :D

I gave survival a try. Worked through all of Lukowski's Cannery, and then got two shot by a laser turret in like 0.2 sec which I didn't notice. I wasn't even mad. I think I like the game being more punishing than simply losing 10% of your health.

Only downside seems to be the ridiculous weight limit. With armor + a single weapon, plus a few meds, I was at 83/85 carry limit. Actually no room for anything else. I have low STR on this build but I wasn't expecting it to be so punishing!

This is a long shot, but here goes.

In general play, performance is fine. I've turned some stuff down (and godrays and volumetric lighting off) and it's OK even in the infamous places like the roof of the Corvega factory.

That's in general play. It all goes pear-shaped when I get to my own settlements. I've gone to town with building - infinite settlement item limit and a couple of dozen mods for extra stuff to build. The problem has really hit since Wasteland Workshop, though. When I'm in a large, complex settlement built from concrete my framerate drops to pretty much unusable. I can go under 10 fps. My GPU drops to ~30% load. I am building many items and using a lot of light sources, but the framerate would be tolerable if the GPU was being used fully (or even close to it). Could it be bottlenecking so hard on the CPU that the GPU can't even be utilised properly? My PC isn't that bad.

Relevant specs:

Core 2 Quad 6600 at 3.2GHz
Radeon 7950 at 1GHz GPU, 1.4GHz memory
8GB DDR2-800

A quick look indicates that this is a common problem but I didn't see a solution.

Sorry but your CPU is not quite modern enough this game needs more than 4 Cores + 6-8GB VRam & it also needs fast DDR3 or 4 the faster Ram the faster the FPS apparently  Since I completed it the FPS are insane @4K maxed out fully with TXAA. But early in the game the FPS were terrible but seemed to improve as the game was patched & or I had less missions to complete. Now after the final mission the game loads faster & the FPS are much better !!

As above, it may be a quad core but it was the first gen and isn't very powerful compared to recent i7 releases

You may simply be pushing it too hard, fallout 4 is quite cpu intensive with all the physics etc, and if you're using mods to increase build limits then you will put even more stress on the cpu.

If it is just my CPU bottlenecking the game, then no CPU would be enough for >30fps. I doubt if you could get more than 3x the CPU performance from anything that exists today. There are reports from people with Haswell i7s getting drops to as low as 30 fps while GPU usage drops to as low as 30%. There are people reporting low CPU and low GPU usage at the same time, with an accompanying huge drop in framerate.

Some examples in this thread, which is just one of many:

There's something in addition to my kit being a bit under par. I'm going to buy a new toy anyway (there's no real scope for upgrading so I'm going to buy a new PC and move my graphics card and drives over to it), but there's another factor affecting Fallout 4 performance.

Yeah, and it's the engine. To me, looks like single-thread bottleneck. Not saying it's single-threaded, but poorly multithreaded, or not optimised to take advantage of modern CPUs. Or old ones for that matter. The CPU has just too much to do.

It's quite antiquated, given the requirements of a game like Fallout. And there isn't much you can do besides getting the best single-thread performance that you can (I.e. and new generation Intel CPU, fast clock). Having a 12-core, 24-thread CPU won't help much.

Hell, even my 'beast' sometimes struggles. But it's hardly unplayable, just a bit laggy on occasion.

Survival annoying me now, I like enemies having more damage and dealing more damage, stops things becoming weak bullet sponges, but having to sleep at settlements etc is just quite tedious after a few hours

If you not against it there is several mods that let you save anywhere and anytime, just not when sleeping.

SURVIVAL QUICK SAVE - No Sleep Till Bedtime by Gopher

Survival Saving - Holotapes save the game by DeEz

There is more then those two though, just look at Nexus. :)

I saw the quick save mods, but saving isn't the issue really, plenty of sleeping bags around etc, just dislike being unable to remove all fatigue just because you're not in a proper bed. No fast travel then means you spend most of your time going back and forth :p

used to be a bedroll mod in fallout 3..so you could camp out and rest

suprised there isnt one already for 4

I might try darker nights mod..with the WOTC spawns mod it might make it a lot scarier at night as they will be so much easier to stumble into gangs at night

I'm building a gym. I've got plenty of bars and weights (the boxing gym near the old north church is a good source) and I can build benches, but I'm not seeing anything that could be used as a stand to hold a barbell over a bench for bench presses. It would be a nice visual touch. Can anyone help me out? Vanilla or mod, I don't mind.

I've tried at least 3 different portable camping mods, and that's not counting conquest which lets you build a campsite as well as upgrading it into a settlement.
